The thermometer rose to 94 degrees, the hottest day of 1954 so far, with forecasts predicting higher temps through the weekend. Evansville led the state at 96, Terre Haute reached 95, and Indianapolis hit 94 as a dry, sultry spell continued with no rain expected in southern Indiana.
A near new 1953 White truck tractor valued about seven thousand dollars was destroyed by fire on U S 31 southeast of Seymour near the John Emily residence. Driver Robert Richardson of Champaign said a fellow trucker flagged him and the underside caught fire as he stopped. he escaped with his personal belongings. The semi trailer remained attached and was only slightly damaged. Gasoline burned but tanks did not explode. Cause undetermined.
Ralph W. Keyes, administrator of Schneck Memorial Hospital, spoke at the Redding Township Farm Bureau meeting at the Redington Knights of Pythias Hall on health of the average American family. His talk used eight alphabet letters to frame points including appearance, banking, clergy, doctor, enforcement officers, friendship, grocer and health. Kenneth Miller presided.
Seymour city officials warned residents of a state law against careless waste disposal after repeated dumping at Freeman Field near Seymour. Mayor Donald L. Herwig stressed the situation is not yet out of hand but could worsen, while Police Chief Robert Gill noted stiff fines for violators.
The church completes a new modern parsonage at 612 North Poplar Street and invites members and guests to an open house Sunday from 2 to 6 PM. Afterward Rev Emery Parks and family will move from the current parsonage at 209 East Third Street to the new home. A consecration is planned for Sunday July 11 at 2:30 PM.
Students recall the 1954 Patriot yearbook as it is studied after distribution on Friday. The Purple and white padded cover features an Owl and the title The Patriot 1954, with sections on activities academics athletics and staff.
Heat driven highway travel brings caution urged as emergency crews report lower year to date fatalities in Seymour Post No 7 Indiana and Jackson County. Through June 1954 the Seymour post area records 13 deaths versus 29 by end of June 1953 with monthly tallies indicating ongoing improvement. Local authorities call for careful driving this weekend amid expected congestion.
The Jackson county board of review completes the first week of its 30 day session in the county courthouse at Brownstown. It reports progress on mortgage and soldier's exemptions filed by taxpayers and few citizens have appeared to challenge assessments. The board, sworn in Monday, is chaired by assessor John E. Zickler with members Omer Owens and Lynn Roberts Jr. and appointees Ray Peters and Ephraim Ahlbrand.
The Rev Homer J Hunsinger pastor of St Paul Congregational Church goes to Terre Haute to chair the executive board of the Central Association of Congregational and Christian Churches of Indiana The meeting at Plymouth Congregational Church begins at 1 PM to plan the association program for the annual meeting in Terre Haute on September 21.
Official maximum Friday and official minimum today noted. Reading at 10 a m shows river at 19 feet and 64 degrees readings recorded.
Monday is Flag Day and merchants are urged to display flags as part of the national observance. Rules cover timing, placement on staffs, procession order, half mast procedures, casket use, and prohibitions on using the flag in advertising. Memorial Day procedures call for half staff to noon and full staff after.
A 1954 sedan driven by Mary Frances Larrison aged 31 sustained about 40 damage to its left side in a collision with a semi trailer truck on West Third Street near Chestnut. Benjamin L Bryant 32 of Georgetown drove the truck which was backing into Seymour post office driveway when the accident occurred. The truck carried U S mail and the incident was investigated by city police.
Howard Chandler 75, longtime Brown county native now of Seymour, died Friday at his cousin James Elkin's home. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Sunday at Voss Mortuary conducted by Rev. Dewey Allman, with burial in Robertson Cemetery, Maumee. He is survived by cousins James and Louise Elkins, a brother Leonard Chandler, and a sister Mrs John Bush. One sister preceded him in death.
Seymour and Jackson county Lutherans will attend a zone banquet and rally of the Lutheran Laymen's League at Donner Center Columbus. Leaders include Walter Krumme and Ivan Springer from Redeemer. Ralph Bohnenkamp Ephraim Ahlbrand and others from Immanuel. Rev C A Stephan of Bloomington will speak as district leagues elect officers for about 160 attendees from Seymour Austin Columbus and nearby areas.
Secretary of State Dulles pressed Washington to fulfill five conditions he says might justify U S intervention in Indochina. He spoke in Los Angeles after a five power Allied military conference concluded at the Pentagon. Two developments could aid his stance as Geneva negotiations drift.
Sehneck Memorial Hospital sent Ralph W. Keyes and Preston Acree to the Indiana Hospital Association annual meeting at Indiana University. Speakers included W Roland Allen, Margaret Giffen, Dr Charles Letourneau, and Admiral Bertram Grosbeck. Ralph M. Haas of Crawfordsville was elected president, succeeding Dorothy Adams of Princeton. Luncheon followed in the LU Student Union Building.
Funeral services for Bowman Elder 66 of near Indianapolis take place this afternoon from his residence. Elder died Thursday at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis after 11 months as patient. A Democrat and leader in McNutt and Roosevelt administrations, he supervised interurban liquidation and helped found national Legion headquarters in Indianapolis and served as Legion national treasurer. He is survived by his widow Madeline Elder a daughter Mrs William L Schermerhorn and a son William L Elder.
American pastor Rev Wilbur N Teasley tours the Holy Land and shares three dimensional slides at the Seymour Rotary Club dinner meeting. Special viewing glasses provided by Teasley. R J Brown chairs the program.
Acting chairman Mundt called for an end to a prolonged feud between Kennedy and Cohn amid week end clashes as McCarthy Army hearings loom. Cohn denied threatening Jackson over a Communist issue while Kennedy and Mundt noted the hostilities should not continue in the hearings.
Funeral services for Mack Hanner 72 of Freetown will be Sunday at 2 p.m. from Freetown Methodist Church with Rev S B Walls presiding. Burial will follow in Freetown Cemetery. Friends may call at Spurgeon Funeral Home Brownstown today and until the service. Hanner had been in failing health a year and was a retired carpenter and painter who worked for the Indiana state highway commission twice.
The French National Assembly defeated Premier Joseph Laniel on a 306 to 293 confidence vote. The result does not force his resignation, as a simple majority of all members is 313, and Laniel may seek to stay in office. President Rene Coty urged him not to quit without coercion. A cabinet meeting was scheduled for 3 p.m. local time.
The Hoosier Boys State opens at the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis with 416 participants from across the state. Jerry Parr of Crothersville represents Seymour Post No 49, while David Zike of Freetown and Herbert Bultman Jr. of Brownstown represent Camp Jackson Post No 112. James Owens of Brownstown is an alternate. The program teaches local county and state government with leadership as a key criterion. The governor and outstanding citizen winners will attend the national Boys State forum in Washington D C.
Forty one year old Daniel J. Marsin, an unemployed welder and father of two, was jailed after Mrs. Evelyn Ann Smith identified him in a police lineup as her abductor. Marsin refused to discuss the case or admit guilt as authorities search for the missing ransom of seventy five thousand dollars and track how a payoff was arranged near Superstition Mountains.
