Seymour shoppers face scarce sugar supplies despite end of sugar rationing. Dealers report limited stock and temporary stockouts as demand surges for canning needs. Prices remain controlled for retail sugar though industrial sugar rationing persists with an October 31 end date.
A truck check at the permanent pit scales on U S Road 31 southeast of Seymour arrested 44 drivers for trucking law violations. Many faced weight limits charges and were arraigned in Seymour Justice Court. The operation involved state police and highway workers with state Public Service Commission help.
Eldora Harris of Indianapolis, formerly of Seymour, arraigned for public intoxication, was fined $11 and released. Four hours later he was arrested again and jailed for damages to Seymour jail plumbing totaling $72, plus $1 and costs, keeping total penalties at $83.
Judge Wilfred Bradshaw outlines Indiana labor law updates from the 1947 session to the Seymour Chamber of Commerce personnel relations committee and other members at the Elks Club. Don M. The War Assets Administration approved a Seymour City Aviation Commission request for an interim civilian use permit at Freeman Field pending final transfer. The permit, filed with the Louisville WAA office, enables near term civilian operations while maintenance remains under federal supervision. Local leaders plan a pilot training school, leveraging GI Bill benefits, with final transfer negotiations to follow.
A city meeting of ministers and church school superintendents will convene at 7 30 pm Friday at Central Christian Church. Dr Clyde S Black of Trinity Methodist says the aim is to draft plans for a city wide leadership training school under the Seymour Ministerial Association in early fall. The course targets current teachers and prospective teachers of city Sunday Schools.

Workers from L P Cavett Company finished the north end of the east lane and opened the widened and resurfaced U S 31 from Seymour north to just south of Rockford Methodist Church. The upgrade widened the road to 22 feet and added a final rock asphalt layer, making it one of the area’s best highway sections.
Flood waters drained rapidly today from submerged low lands in Jackson county as White River was expected to be back in its banks at practically all places by week’s end. Rockford’s river level stood at 84 feet, down about three feet in 24 hours, as cooler weather prevailed with a high of 87 and low of 59.
Mrs. Mary Jackson of Scottsburg R4 is hospitalized at Schneck Memorial with a fractured leg and other injuries after the ambulance door opened while she tried to crack a window. Her son was being transported to the same hospital. Seymour state police officer Forrest Brewer investigated the incident on US Route 50 east of Seymour.
Frosty Herrmann of Seymour a World War I and II veteran was endorsed for American Legion southern vice commander at a ninth district convention in Bedford. The election will occur at the Indiana department convention. Ralph Harrison was named district commander to succeed James M. Tucker. installation in Indianapolis in August.
Paul W. Rigsbee announced Shields Park will host the second summer concert at 8 pm Friday. The program features military marches National Emblem Our Director British Eighth, overtures The Crusaders Safira In a Persian Market, plus Clap Yo Hands Coronation March Cypress Silhouettes.

Large crowds enjoy a country barn dance at Shields Park every Sunday night presented by a local group. The show is broadcast Sundays on WSUA Bloomington from 10 30 to 11 00 AM, with the usual afternoon broadcast returning June 22 from 5 30 to 6 00 PM. The free park show runs 7 to 8 PM with Jack Calloway as master of ceremonies and performers including George Zimmerman Don Heacock Barney Lawson Betty Calloway Spangler sisters Mac McKain Dan Gullett Marc Eglen and Silver Gardner. The 90 minute park show features music and comedy while the 30 minute broadcast covers the same event.

Election of officers for 1947 48 will feature the final meeting of the board of directors of the Jackson County Tuberculosis Association for the summer. The gathering is at 7 30 tonight in the directors room of the Jackson County Loan and Trust Company. No board meetings are held in July and August each year.
