Seymour residents report an early scattered shower followed by a noon downpour that began around 1 pm and continued in varying steadiness. The temperature reached eighty degrees by 2 pm as tropical showers persist for ten to twelve days, delaying county farm work and forcing longer hours to catch up. Continued dispatches noted statewide rainfall contrasts.
Mrs. Margarete Ahlbrand wife of Albert H. AhlbrandRich local resident and former Immanuel Lutheran School teacher died Monday night at 5 15 at 424 West Brown street after illness beginning May 31 She was born October 14 1871 in Cleveland Ohio and leaves husband six children including Rev Carl E Ahlbrand and William P Ahlbrand plus 21 grandchildren Funeral from the 424 West Brown home and Immanuel Lutheran Church with burial in Lutheran Cemetery.
Two escapees from state institutions have been apprehended and returned to custody. Ralph F. Montgomery, who fled the state school at Fort Wayne, was captured on U.S. Route 31 south of Seymour by Officers Walter G. LaMaster and Lawrence F. Conway and sent back to the Fort Wayne facility. Ezra Kirtz, who escaped Muscatatuck Colony at Butlerville, was turned over to the colony authorities after being picked up by Officer LaMaster.
Jackson County residents will soon obtain small amounts of sugar for home canning as the Jackson County War Price and Rationing Board and other boards across Indiana Ohio Michigan Kentucky and West Virginia plan to resume issuance on June 18. About eight pounds per applicant is expected, with regional administrator Birkett L. Williams noting some variation by district.
Mrs Lollie Mains Hayes 71 living former Seymour resident died Monday in Phoenix after long illness. She was born December 25 1873 in Seymour eldest child of Dr L M and Laura A Mains. Survived by husband Sam Hayes an adopted daughter Catherine Merley Sampson and Ross Merley in the armed forces two brothers Dr Mains and Albert C Mains, three sisters Lydia Mains Maude Mercer and Francis M Wiley. Funeral in Phoenix Wednesday with burial there.

An adult sewing class organized last week will meet at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the cafeteria Room 106 Shields High School announced by Miss Pearl Gnaffer economics instructor who is its teacher. The class is open to anyone with sewing problems. There are no fees and each participant should bring their own materials.

An official list of those accepted for service in a 36 member Jackson County group sent to Louisville for pre induction physicals was awaited. Unofficial reports suggest a high accept rate for general service among those examined. most are under 30, with one 4F volunteer. New rules permit reclassification of 4F and 1A1 men under 26 for possible non combatant service with lowered physical standards.
Shields Junior High principal and coach C H Englehardt travels to Indianapolis for a State Board of Education meeting, where he was recently named by Governor Ralph F Gates. He serves on the board's textbook commission.

Lt. Charles G Beatty told Seymour Rotary Club members about his D Day actions and later fighting with an armored division in Europe. He described four wounds and his platoon leadership while answering questions during the Monday dinner at the Elks Home.

William John Robertson sixty four, a former Brownstown resident, died suddenly from a heart attack at his farm in Buhl Idaho. He was born July 4 1880 in Brownstown township. He is survived by three children Major Garis Robertson Helen and James Andrew Robertson, a half brother Charles Knost and a sister Mrs James Williams. Funeral services and burial in Buhl Idaho.
Kathern Ellis Kate Glenn, eighty, longtime Seymour resident, died at Schneck Memorial Hospital after a two week illness following a fall that fractured her hip at her home 602 Indianapolis Avenue. Born November 30 1864 in Kentucky she was a Christian Church member with many friends among the older residents. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Premier Ivanoe Bonomi resigns from office in Rome. The move ends his tenure as Italy faces political shifts and a new leadership formation is expected in the capital.
Australian Ninth division troops rapidly exploited landings on British Borneo. Allied bombardment drove Japanese to flee as U S Seventh Fleet and MacArthur forces pressed from Brooketon to Brunei Bay with heavy air and naval support. Casualties were minimal, while Labuan airfield and Seria oil district fell under allied control.
American air forces report mine sowing raids in the home waters of Japan with B 29s and B 24 Liberators involved. The 21st Bomber Command says 102.67 square miles of six major cities damaged or destroyed by these operations.
Prime Minister W L Mackenzie King led the Liberal party to a slim majority in Canada’s new House of Commons after late returns from the general election. The Liberals secured 118 of 245 seats with eight Quebec Independent Liberals, while the Progressive Conservatives won 62 seats. Ballots from service members abroad await counting for ten days.
