Jackson county prepares for another bumper wheat crop with an estimated 18 000 to 19 000 acres to harvest yielding about 400 000 bushels. Barley is being cut and wheat cutting will start next week as Hessian fly and rust damage appear in localized areas. Harvest uses combines more than binders, reflecting the county’s largest farming tasks.
The Salvation Army annual drive reports $106 raised by early morning with W. A. Morgan Mrs. Carrie French and Kathleen Cummings among first reporters. Workers urged to turn in pledges by Friday noon. Riley Emerson schools now at one hundred percent. Browns town drive under Allen H. Nierman adds seventeen workers. county quota stands at $1,500 and finishes next Tuesday noon.

William C. Kramer of Seymour Indiana, brother of the late Robert Kramer who was killed at Pearl Harbor, has enlisted in the United States Navy at Indianapolis and heads to Norfolk Virginia for training as a carpenter's mate first class. The Kramer family received a Navy package with their son’s belongings including an oil-soaked ten dollar bill two fifty cent pieces a high school graduation ring and other items.
The Seymour Post No. 89 American Legion named a nominating committee Walter Voss George Laupus Jr and Ivan R Jack Love at a Legion Hall meeting led by Commander C H Werst The group will report July 8 with elections set for a July 22 meeting Delegates for the state convention in Indianapolis August 15-16 will also be named The post endorsed past commander Forrest O Herrmann for Ninth district commander Herrmann has led the post twice and chairs Ninth district committees He heads the Bedford Voiture of the 40 8 with many local Legion members.
Judge Donald Rogers of the Monroe Circuit Court in Bloomington was chosen as special judge for the Stevenson A Rider case in Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown. The defense and state narrowed the options to Rogers, Long, and Mitchell, leaving Rogers as the hearing judge after mutual strikes. A related case for Clyde Cravens on intoxicating liquor was continued generally. A divorce in Flora E Childers vs Marvin Childers granted custody of four children with $12 weekly support starting June 10.
A sharp earthquake lasting six to eight seconds was felt in Reno and within about thirty miles. No damage reported as residents phoned police, fearing bombings. The item mentions the Steinker Meat Market ad line toward the end.
Ten year old Patsy Luella Blevins daughter of Carrie Blevins Brownstown died at 8 30 p m Wednesday after a lingering illness. Funeral 2 30 p m Friday at Brownstown Methodist Church with burial at Fairview Cemetery. Survived by mother three sisters and a brother.
George H Welmer 76 retired farmer of the Jonesville area died at his home on Columbus A8 U S Route 31 one mile south of Jonesville after a five and a half month illness. He was born November 18 1865 in Bartholomew County and married Emma Meyer February 28 1892. He was a member of the Jonesville Lutheran Church and burial was in Jonesville Cemetery.
Tokyo reports Vice Admiral Ichiro Sato stating the Japanese navy has made a decisive advance toward mastery of the sea by striking smashing blows on U S naval forces in Aleutian and Midway battles. He claims U S carriers sunk, Japanese losses heavy, and Australia orphaned as the United States must defend its shores. Continued on page 3 column 4.

Nelson Rush of Seymour has entered military service via a selective service call and is stationed at Camp Crowder Missouri. He is making an unusually fine record in early training and remains active in sports, especially baseball, as noted in a letter dated June 6.
Final approval is given for a railroad spur from the Pennsylvania line into the area for the Advanced Twin Engine School. The project manager will soon contract landowners for right of way as work proceeds rapidly. Tests for a well water supply show encouraging signs.
General Emmons headquarters reports part of the Midway battle story told by American army, Navy, and Marine fliers. American planes struck Japanese carriers and fleet, with bombers, dive bombers, and fighters fighting through fatigue and danger to halt an invasion.
Submarine warfare in the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific is credited with 265 sunk ships since Pearl Harbor. Two American fishing vessels and a British merchantman were announced as Atlantic victims, with seven ships sunk in the Atlantic this week. All crew aboard the fishing boats survived after a 65 mile row, and 71 aboard the cargo carrier also escaped with no loss of life.
London reports an Associated Press dispatch stating that 306 Czech lives have been lost in Nazi reprisals for the Heydrich killing. The Berlin radio announced 31 more executions in Prague and Brno after declaring Lidice’s men all shot. Women were sent to camps and children placed in institutions as Lidice was razed.
New accounts describe American air fleets breaking up two Japanese carrier fleets and fending off 180 enemy planes to defend Hawaii. Admiral Nimitz says about half of Japan’s ships were sunk or damaged in a three day battle, with thousands reportedly perishing at sea. The clash ended as U S forces lost contact after a night pursuit, amid mixed Tokyo and Berlin signals regarding victory.
The United States, Great Britain and Russia disclosed a full understanding on creating a second front in Europe in 1942, with a 20 year mutual assistance pact signed May 26. British Eden announced the pact's aim against Hitlerite Germany and rebuilding Europe under the Atlantic Charter. Concurrently, reports said Bir Hacheim in North Africa was captured by Axis forces, a claim disputed by British and Free French, while Rommel pressed through to threaten the British left flank.
Seymour police officers and Jackson county authorities are invited to a quarterly conference on mobilization of law enforcement in national defense. The event, sponsored by the FBI and DOJ, will be June 18 at 1 PM in the United States District Court room, post office building, New Albany.
