Farmers in Seymour and Jackson county report a dry spell and rising temperatures with no meaningful rain. Wells are dry in parts of Jackson and Scott counties, and farmers fear crop damage if rain does not come within days. The recent storm brought little rain while intensifying the heat.
Seymour Ministerial Association met at Abe Martin lodge Brown County State Park near Nashville for a picnic style session. They planned joint summer worship services starting July 5 with Rev J Willard Yoder of St Pauls Congregational Church preaching and St Pauls choir performing. Attending were several local clergy and their spouses.
Albert Judd of Shields high school spoke to the Rotary club on cicadas, the seventeen year周期 focus t s, detailing their behaviors as they have appeared in numbers this year across parts of the United States. He was introduced by Dr. R. J. Miller, member of the June program committee. The discussion touched on the world’s forested acreage, noting about 7.5 billion acres exist with over 1.4 billion in North America.
The Rev Clarence Rittman a Lutheran missionary in Vadakangalam Tinnevelly district South India and former Columbus resident spoke to the Rotary Club about Indian life seven years of residence His wife and two children returned home for a vacation He described geography habits and occupations noting 72 percent of Indians are tied to the soil and the caste system with a shepherd unable to become a barber wages ranged from twelve to fifteen cents a day for laborers six cents for women thirty five cents for skilled artisans and 10 to 15 dollars for teachers monthly
Vernon Tidd aged 43 of Hayden was acquitted of assault and battery after a Seymour justice of the peace trial. The case stemmed from a disputed car title at Wilson home on 623 East Third Street between 5 and 6 PM Saturday May 30. Witnesses testified to a fight. defense said Tidd acted in self defense during the altercation.
John Vert of Indianapolis pleaded guilty to public intoxication in city court before Mayor C W Burkart. He was fined 1 dollar plus costs 11 dollars, paid and released. Vert had been in Louisville to fetch a new track car for the Seymour line and was arrested Monday night at Second Street and Broadway. Police could not locate the truck he claimed to have parked.
Two suspected change artists, possibly the same pair seen in Franklin and Columbus earlier, attempted a noon raid at the Russett Cafeteria on East Second Street Seymour around 12 30 PM Monday but were stopped by a quick employee. Indiana State Police at Seymour were notified and are seeking the men.
Mrs Minnie Wilkerson aged sixty four lifelong Jackson county resident died at 700 East Brown street after a nine week illness. Funeral at 2:30 pm Wednesday at Pentecostal Church Glenlawn with Rev Homer Smith. Survived by husband Leander Wilkerson four children plus siblings and grandchildren. Call at Clyde Compton’s home 617 Centennial street anytime.
An electric motor powering EuDaly's Fountain cooling system overheated around 8:25 this morning before opening. Seymour firemen were called as basements of the fountain and adjoining G Slang store filled with smoke. Fire Chief Colemeyer and Fireman Downs inspected. motor shut off by G Cline. No damage beyond the motor. smoke escaped via two lifted manhole covers.
Black coach owned by Theodore Tillman of South Pine street was stolen from Gaiser Park Monday night. Tillman parked it at 7 30 and reported the loss at 11. State police radio broadcast a description this morning.
Washington lawmaker Representative Marion A. Zioncheck, held for mental observation at Gallinger hospital, escaped his room by kicking out window screens and roamed the grounds in a white bathrobe and a long black cigar before guards recaptured him.
Ten dangerous escapees from the St Peter State Hospital are being hunted in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Authorities say Lawrence De Vol and two aides aka Scarface Saroko and Donald Reader may head for Ozark hideouts. Six of the 16 fugitives have been recaptured, but four killers remain at large as statewide searches continue.
William Storen, former state treasurer and current treasurer of the Indiana Democratic Party, launches a bid for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor at the June 16 state convention. A Scott County resident born in Lexington, he has banking and trust company leadership experience in Indianapolis.
House conferees pressed to reconcile the House and Senate versions of the new revenue bill. Doughton and King led talks amid a sharp dispute over a 42 percent cap on undistributed profits versus a flat 7 percent tax. Presidents views were discussed as recess looms and action may slip to next week.
The annual meeting of the Jackson County Historical Association will be held at the museum in the Jackson County State Forest near Brownstown next Sunday, June 14. Officers will be elected and other business discussed. Plans include opening the new museum established about a year ago. The session starts at 2 30 p m and is open to all interested.
Nineteen year old Peggy Ann Landon arrives in Cleveland to a ecstatic reception at the convention venue. She says she came to make friends and has not pursued a particular profession or marriage plans. She attends with Governor Landon’s grandson Jobin Landon accompanying her.
The June Republican convention begins with Henry P. Fletcher presiding. Harold H. Burton, Cleveland mayor, gives the welcome after singing and prayer. Delegates proceed to roll call and elect temporary officers, forming committees including one to inform Senator Steiner of Oregon he is elected temporary chairman and will deliver the keynote address. The session adjourns until 8 p.m. for the keynote address.
Senator Elmer A. Benson arrives in Detroit to push a federal probe while Michigan AG David E. Crowley and Wayne County Prosecutor Doncan McCrea review letters alleging Black Legion activity in several states. Court resumes as witnesses dispute flogging claims and 13 suspects are ordered to circuit court on murder and kidnapping counts.
In Cleveland Indiana delegates at the Republican convention divided focus between the opening ceremony and the fate of the state organization. Ivan C. Morgan condemned the election of Grace Banta Reynolds over Eleanor Barker Snodgrass as Indiana National Committeewoman by a 17 to 11 vote. Morgan warned he may resign if program changes occur. George A. Ball was reelected National Committeeman, and James P. Goodrich defeated Henry W. Marshall 15 to 1 for Indiana’s spot on the resolutions committee.
Michigan City reports that inmate Flood Black is held in solitary after guards uncovered a tunnel plan by prisoners to breach the wall. A prisoner provided details leading to the discovery of a tunnel from a tool house where spades were stored. Black, sentenced to life in 1925 under the habitual criminal act, faces confinement while the incident is reviewed.
At the Cleveland GOP convention the struggle over ticket spots and party principles intensifies. Alf M. Landon’s Kansas backing is acknowledged, with no clear anti Landon coalition forming. Key speeches include Cleveland mayor Harold H. Burton and a planned keynote by Senator Frederick Steiner.
