Hospital records show May gains across bed and outpatient totals, including 433 bed patients (361 adults, 72 children) and 292 outpatients, with rises in tonsillectomies, outpatient surgeries, and emergency operations. Births fell and deaths declined versus April.
In Jackson Circuit Court Judge John M. Lewis set bond at 1000 dollars for Jack Nelson Weiss 34 of Seymour accused of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated second offense. Weiss requested deferral of arraignment to consult counsel with arraignment set for Saturday. Other actions included ejectment suit by Jewell and Leona Fleetwood against Mary Ann Lucas and a Crothersville quiet title matter with Nat Hill named special judge. Errol Eisenhower arraigned for reckless driving and disobeying a police order pleads not guilty with 500 dollar bond and seven days to obtain counsel. Mabel Ogden granted divorce from William C Ogden and restoration of maiden name. Trial in Morris Plan vs Edmonds noted. Linscott found guilty of contempt and jailed until obeying court order.
A 47-year-old Bartholomew County man was injured on Ewing Street after a collision with a parked car. He was cited for operating a motor vehicle under the influence and treated at Schneck Memorial Hospital. Another young driver was cited for starting a motor vehicle without reasonable safety in a separate Ewing Street collision. Two Saturday afternoon accidents on Tipton and Ninth streets caused minor damage to two more vehicles.
A woods rattlesnake rare north of Kentucky was found Sunday on the Hollowell farm near U. S. 31 south of town. The venomous reptile, about 3.5 feet long with a blond body and a blunt head, was spotted near the barn by Marjorie and Steve Tabor. It is believed the snake moved to the barn to escape flooding.
Forty four boys from Indiana attend the annual Farm Boys Forestry Camp at Versailles State Park June 4 to 10. The camp directed by E J Lott of Purdue Extension forestry features woods management tree identification and fire fighting. Attendees include Henry Rieckers and William S Ashton from nearby counties.
The annual session began today in Brownstown at the county courthouse with members including Stanley A. Switzer and William R. Forgey. Other members are Louis H. Schroer Rosa Lane Allman and Claude R. McCrary. The board will review real and personal property assessments for 1962 taxes and exemptions. Objections may be heard during June.
Two people were treated at Schneck Memorial Hospital after mower related injuries over the weekend. Other outpatients included four with minor injuries.
The record shows a Sunday high of 83 and a Sunday low, with the River at 7 a m at 3.4 feet.
Brownstown town board awarded a $10 per ton hot mix and $9.50 per ton cold mix blacktopping contract to L. P. Cavett Company of Seymour. The board set June 16 for a special meeting to elect a new president after Chester Holeman died May 24. The 1962 budget includes $1,000 for cemetery equipment. The meeting also discussed sewer rates and a request to blacktop Ewing business streets, with no action taken. Six trustees and officials attended.
A 37 year old Seymour man John Donnells junior pleaded guilty in Seymour City Court to public intoxication and disorderly conduct and was fined 15 dollars plus 17 dollars costs on the intoxication charge and 10 dollars plus 17 dollars costs on the disorderly conduct charge. A six month suspended sentence to the state farm was given on the intoxication charge.
City police investigate a burglary at Smitty's Good Gulf Station Tip ton and Poplar streets. A cigarette vending machine was pried open and the coin box left on the floor containing $3.75 in quarters. A rear door had been tampered with.
The Seymour Senior High School summer program opened with 192 students registering for English III, biology, government and driver education. Biology led with 65 enrollments. classes run weekdays 8 AM to 12 noon through July 28 excluding July 4, with tuition free aside from books and materials.
The Supreme Court unanimously orders a new trial for Leslie Irvin of Evansville Indiana convicted of a six month murder spree with a death sentence in Gibson county. Justice Clark cites prejudice in the community and juror opinions and remands for possible retrial on the indictment or another first degree murder charge.
Adlais Stevenson's presidential mission to South America began with a warm Caracas welcome. He met privately with President Betancourt and Venezuelan officials, emphasizing economic aid and social advancement while denying alliance aims against Cuba.
Three people were injured slightly in a two car crash on U S 50 four and a half miles west of Brownstown at 2 45 pm Sunday. Clarence Masters his wife Elsie and Alvin Kim Bevers were taken to Schneck Memorial Hospital with lip laceration bruised leg and minor injuries.
Indiana State Board of Accounts officials will meet with city and town clerks at 10 a m Tuesday in the Elks Club at Bedford to review new budget forms to be used for 1962 budgets and tax levies. Attending from the county are Sey mour clerk treasurer Gaynelle Moritz, deputy clerk Rose mary Hunsucker, Crothersville clerk John W Lewis, Medora clerk Gerald White, and Brownstown clerk Hazel Mitchell.
President Kennedy outlined to Prime Minister Macmillan plans for a radio television report Tuesday night about the Vienna summit with Khrushchev. The talks yielded an East West contact agreement with limited results and Laos and Cuba setbacks, while Kennedy asserted U S defense commitments remain.
