Plans to build a new high school unit in Crothersville advance as Vernon township forms The Vernon Township School Building Corporation a non profit. Papers sent to the state officers to be named. about 120 of 300 shares sold at 5 dollars each with one share per person.
The Hoosier Hills Council of the Boy Scouts of America will host an open house Sunday afternoon at Camp Louis Ernst near Dupont starting 4 PM. Activities include softball, horseshoes, fishing, "seeing and sitting" exhibits, cub games, adventure trail, first aid demo, reunion, and a camp fire at 8:30 PM with a community meal around 6:30 PM.
A total of 475 trucks were weighed and six drivers were arrested during a weight check at the permanent pit scales on U S 31 east of Seymour. One driver faced an overweight axle citation, one for tandem axle overweight, two for over registered weight, and two for PSCI violations. Cpl. Arthur R. Raney Jr and weigh clerks John D. Timbers and James K. Miller led the operation.
Principal C H Englehardt announced Shields Junior High School honor rolls for the 1953 54 second semester. Seventeen students earned semester honors and sixty six earned regular honors across grades seven and eight with specific names listed for both high and regular rolls.
Benton Miller 86 a former Brownstown public schools teacher and retired Phoenix Life Insurance Company general manager for the western United States died at his Webster Groves Missouri residence after a three and a half year illness. He was born April 6 1868 in Wegan and raised near Brownstown. He left Brownstown 65 years ago after teaching there.
Seymour Lions Club held its annual officer election at the Elks Club. Kenneth N. Warbritton was chosen president with a full slate of officers and directors. Installation will take place Thursday night June 17 at the Seymour Country Club event.
Julius G. Harlow 64 lifelong Seymour resident and former Seymour Police Chief died at 5 20 p m Thursday at his home 801 North Broadway after five months of illness. He served as police chief 1934 to 1938 under Mayor C W Burkart and later as clerk of Jackson County Selective Service Board No 34. Funeral Monday at Voss Mortuary with Rev Emery Parks officiating. Burial Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p m Saturday.
The Indiana Weather Bureau predicts clear and warmer weather starting Saturday after a cool damp spell with 1.62 inches of June rain in the first three days. Thursday’s high reached 73 and the low 50, with 10 inches of rainfall reported. Winds suggest a rise into the 90s by Sunday, followed by light scattered showers and mild conditions.

A $47,470.20 damage suit was filed today in Jackson Circuit Court arising from a July 21, 1951 traffic accident on State Road 60 near Pekin and Salem. Frank Sullivan sues Gene Brewer for injuries from a collision when a tractor with wagon was struck by a car at a lane entrance. Sullivan alleges multiple severe injuries and medical costs totaling about $47,470.20 plus hospital and farm-related expenses. Attorneys listed include Allen and Thompson for the plaintiff and George H. Gossman for the defendant.
James H. Weaver 43, of Steelville, Missouri, a former Jackson County resident, died Wednesday afternoon at Baines Hospital in St. Louis after brain surgery May 1. Born February 6, 1911 in Muncie, he was a shoe factory employee and Moose Lodge member. He is survived by his widow Juanita Hutchins, a son Gary, a stepdaughter Judy, five sisters and three brothers. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but services are likely in Steelville.
Mrs Alta Hyatt 65 of Washington Indiana suffered a fractured wrist and facial injuries when a car driven by her husband Clarence 67 left the road on Crane Hill near Seymour and Brownstown. She was thrown from the auto and admitted to Schneck Memorial Hospital. Trooper Lawrence Conway investigated.
Secretary of State Dulles told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Indochina’s military situation is grave but not hopeless. He urged Congress to approve a new 3 percent foreign aid program and grant flexibility in spending to confront the Communist threat. He warned Communist China and the Soviet Union are arming Vietminh and expanding their influence in Southeast Asia and stressed the need for collective defense and aid to weaker nations.
Funeral services for Mrs. Aman da Robertson 61 Mitchell sister of Mrs. Dee Terrell Norman were held at the First Church of the Nazarene in Mitchell with Rev A L Emmett in charge Burial followed at Sheeks Cemetery Mitchell She had been ill three years and seriously ill for a month Born March 25 1893 in Lawrence county she was the daughter of Riley and Florence Bowman She was married March 28 1913 to Elza Robertson and is survived by her husband five children two step children two sisters two brothers nine grandchildren and 13 step grandchildren plus one infant son who died in infancy Local survivors include husband and sister in Norman and Mitchell residents.
Mrs. Minnie Lorance of Saybrook Illinois, sister of Mrs. Lela McKinney Columbus R88, died Wednesday in Bloomington Illinois. Funeral services were held Saturday at Saybrook with burial in the Saybrook cemetery. She leaves four children and three sisters Mrs. Charles Morris and Mrs. Ada Clark of Columbus and Mrs. Flora Parker of Newman Illinois.
Three Seymour Lodge No. 462 Elks and their wives travel to the Indiana Elks Association four day convention at the French Lick Springs Hotel. The Laupus and Beldon couples join Mr. and Mrs. J Floyd Beldon and Mr. and Mrs. T J Laupus, with Laupus serving as exalted ruler of the local lodge.
The four Puerto Rican militants faced a U S district court as witnesses named an usher and a congressman who helped capture them. Rep Kenneth A Roberts and Lolita Lebron were among those testifying as the March 1 House shooting case opened before Judge Alexander Holtzoff with a seven by five jury and four government witnesses.
John Helt 80 of Azalia died Wednesday at Bartholomew County Hospital Columbus. Funeral Saturday at 2 from Dowd Funeral Home North Vernon with burial in Reddington Cemetery. Survived by two Reddington brothers Louis and Harmon Helt two sons Ralph Gordon and Paul Helt two daughters Pearl Foist and Marguerite Byford and several siblings. He was a prominent farmer and Methodist.

William Thomas Elkins of 214 South O'Brien Street retires as an employee of the Arvin Industries South plant. He is the tenth retiree in Seymour division and the fiftieth since the January 1 1954 Arvin Pension Plan. He previously worked on his father's farm, then ran a Blacksmith shop at Stone Head, Brown County before moving to East Columbus.
