Traffic remained heavy on state and federal highways during the Memorial Day weekend but few accidents were reported near Seymour state police post. Officers issued 44 warnings and arrested 42 motorists on U S Road 31 across Jackson Johnson Bartholomew and Scott counties over Saturday and Sunday. Extra patrols operated Friday to Sunday with all troopers on duty to reduce the toll. Two accidents were investigated further on page 4 column 3.

Hog Prices Steady at Peak Levels Since 1948
Hog prices at the local market were unchanged from Friday, the highest since 1948, with top quotes at 26.25 per hundredweight for the 190 to 230 pound class. Stadler's Packing Co in Columbus reported another rise to 26.50 to 26.75 for 180 to 220 pounds, marking the longest continuous advance on record. Hog receipts over five months lag 3,000,000 behind last year, while cattle receipts exceed last year by 800,000.

Power Failure in Seymour Traced to Pole Hit and High Tension Wire
Public Service Company of Indiana district manager I L Jack Frost said a car struck an electric light pole near Walnut Grove School at about 6 45 PM Saturday, snapping the pole and a 33 000 volt line. The event triggered transformer outages and widespread blackout lasting 10 minutes to three and one half hours with damage estimated in the thousands. A fire ensued when a transformer blew at West Third and North Pine streets. Page 6.

The Seymour Municipal Swimming Pool in Shields Park reported a booming start to the 1953 season with 1,496 swimmers over the first two days. On Saturday 753 and Sunday 743 visitors used the pool during five hours each day, with receipts totaling $1,008.65 and season tickets selling well. Manager Joe D. Gill noted the opening week shows higher attendance and ticket sales than last year. The schedule runs 1 to 9 pm weekdays and 1 to 6 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Youths Guilty Of Reckless Driving In City Court
Three men pleaded guilty to reckless driving in city court after weekend police arrests. Bobbie G. Durham 17 of Columbus was fined 10 and 14.75 costs and faced a 60 day license suspension recommended by Mayor Donald L. Herwig. Noble Southern 25 of Seymour also pleaded guilty and paid 5 and 14.75 costs.

Ex Local Girl and Husband Recover From Wichita Crash
Mrs. David Avery of 1101 English Avenue Wichita and her husband are recovering from severe injuries after a Saturday night crash 20 miles south of Eldorado Kansas. Mrs Avery suffered internal injuries a leg wound and shock while her husband had a broken neck and shoulder and has improved enough to leave the critical list. They receive care at Wesley Hospital. Two Soldiers Die In Head-on Crash Near Bedford Indiana
