Snow bound county prepares for 1970 as offices close for New Year. Seymour Daily Tribune not published Thursday. Courthouse closes 4 p m today to 8 am Monday. Post Office follows holiday schedule with limited deliveries and open lobby for mail and stamp services.
The Seymour Madrigal Chorale, a mix of local college and high school students, performed Christmas music at First Baptist Church sponsored by the Seymour Civic Arts Guild. Conductor Steven Nichter earned high praise for precise directing and the program featured solos and instrumental numbers including Ron Nelson’s Choral Fanfare for Christmas and a Gloria for trumpet and organ. The audience favorite before intermission was Do You Hear What I Hear with Joyce Burbrink piano, Larry Hill organ, and Larry Schneck snare drum.
The Army will court martial S Sgt David Mitchell on assault with intent to murder in the alleged My Lai massacre in Vietnam. Maj Gen John Boles of the 1st Armored Division at Ft Hood Texas ordered the action after an investigation of charges concerning 30 South Vietnamese civilians. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment.
Indiana Senate Republicans unanimously backed a reapportionment plan to replace the federal order. Key points allow 51 counties to stay intact, cross district lines in several counties, limit population deviation, and keep 25 two-year terms, with some districts potentially having two senators. House caucus to follow.
Twenty one Jackson County soybean growers will be honored at a 6 30 p m banquet January 15 at The Pines restaurant. Event is sponsored by the Jackson County Farm Bureau Co op and Extension Service with trophies merchandised awards and special pins from the Indiana Crops Improvement Association. Dan Piper of Columbus will give the keynote on management. Piper brings experience managing Princeton Farms serving as farm management agent for Irwin Trust and Savings and running his own service.

An overnight blizzard dumped up to eight inches on Indianapolis forcing an emergency snow removal order downtown and banning on street parking. Main streets stayed open but many side roads were blocked with drifts up to three feet. rail and highway corridors were affected across central Indiana with other cities reporting accumulating snow and hazardous conditions.
FISH the community emergency help organization distributes commitment cards and formation sheets Sunday across seven Seymour sponsor churches ahead of 1970 scheduling. Since starting in early 1969 FISH answered 400 calls February through December providing local transport meals and babysitting.
Doris McMahan will resign as superintendent of the Jackson County Home at Brownstown on February 28, 1970, after 11 years in charge. Her sister Maude McMahan plans to leave the institution in February. The McMahan family has long operated the home dating to the 1930s.
