Jackson county prepares for a busy election year with numerous county and township posts up for grabs. The 1957 Indiana legislature increased official salaries effective January 1, encouraging many residents to announce candidacies for four year county terms and a six year circuit judge term.
Snowy and icy conditions loom for New Year’s Eve motorists in Indiana with snow expected up to two inches in central areas and glaze on roads in northern parts. Temperatures fall to 25 in Jackson County from a high in the 40s, while forecasts call for sunny, colder weather on New Year’s Day. Indiana 39 south of Tampico and Indiana 235 east of Medora remain closed due to flooding. Weather observer Ruth Everhart notes a 50 degree day and a 30 degree low with minor precipitation and a falling river.
Official weather summary notes a Monday high of 50 and a low of 30 degrees. Reading at 8 pm shows 20 degrees with river level at 8.8 feet and trace precipitation recorded.
Seymour retail merchants vote to keep stores open Friday nights until 9 p m starting January 3. Most shops will close at 5 30 p m on Saturdays while Wednesday afternoon hours remain unchanged. Drug stores food markets and restaurants are expected to keep current hours.
The Muscatatuck and Limestone National Farm Loan Associations merge management starting January 1 1958. Geof frey Hawkins becomes secretary-treasurer for the combined units as Muscatatuck had no secretary-treasurer after C M Moffett’s October death. Offices stay in Bedford and Seymour with longtime assistants retained.
Seymour Rotary Club gathered for the weekly dinner at 6 15 p m Monday at the Elks Club with all but four members present. No program was given due to year end holidays and the meeting was dismissed early, with Hugh Grim presiding.
William L. Hague prominent Indiana funeral director died at 7:50 a.m. in Medora after a six month illness. Born October 26, 1870 in Washington County, he founded the Hague Funeral Home in Medora and practiced 51 years. Survived by three children and a brother, service at 1:30 p.m. Friday with entombment at Riverview Abbey Mausoleum. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hague Funeral Home.
Seymour officials were honored at the Optimists first annual Appreciation Dinner at the American Legion Home. Gifts included a corksack for sewer contracts and a key for opening Bruce Street crossing. The event ended with a singalong as departing Optimist Mike Kreshka was saluted with a life membership.

The Board of Public Works and Safety awarded coal to J A Headley Coal Company at 9.52 per ton for Enos Indiana stoker coal. William E Spray Seymour R4 won bids for 1500 tons washed gravel at 65 cents per ton FOB and 1500 tons delivered on city streets at 1.10 per ton. Bids on other materials were held under advisement. a damage claim over East Brown Street prompted a repair order to Bock and Knapp with potential street closure. A Barrett Law petition on South Avenue seeks owner support before action. All regular claims were approved.
A six year old girl was critically wounded by her mother in Terre Haute Indiana. Ann Scott 29 told police she planned to kill her three children and herself but lost her nerve after the first shot. She said she fired from about 12 feet away as Max Scott her husband had ordered her to leave.
A House appropriations subcommittee will begin hearings January 8 on a Defense Department request for emergency missile funds. Chairman Mahon expects about 1.2 billion dollars to supplement the current year, with McElroy aiming for a billion in supplemental funds. Mahon favors offensive missiles and cautions against premature anti missile defenses while noting Polaris submarine missiles offer potential.
Washington reports describe a strategy to demand new disarmament concessions from Russia before a second East West summit. Eisenhower and Dulles favor limited talks on disarmament, possibly at a foreign ministers or UN level, with the door left open for a broader meeting if progress occurs. Harold Stassen presses for liberalizing the U S stance ahead of talks despite opposition from Strauss and the Defense Department. The NSC meeting next Monday will weigh these conflicting views.
Medora trustees voted to raise water rates in the business district at their annual meeting in the city building. Representatives from Gerwin Shoe Corp and Electric Manufacturing Co spoke on the proposed increase while residential rates remain unchanged. The meeting included routine year end business and trustees plan to reconvene January 7.
Seymour police recovered an abandoned 1950 coach car 15 hours after it was reported stolen. Officers Walfred J. Kleimola and Jackie R. Nowling found the vehicle in the 300 block of Carter Street at 12:55 PM. The theft occurred between 6:30 and 9:30 PM Monday, with owner Grover B. Davis of 342 Calvin Boulevard identifying the vehicle.
