Jackson County law officers announce immediate removal of all pin ball machines and slot devices from county establishments citing Indiana 1935 act sections. Arrests promised if noncompliant as search warrants possible. cooperation pledged with town marshals to purge machines before 1937 ends.
Seymour chief of police Julius G. Harlow announced a city ordinance prohibiting use of air guns and rifles within Seymour. He said officers will confiscate any guns found in operation as complaints rise about children being shot in the face and lights damaged during the holiday season.
The city ushers in 1937 with numerous parties and affairs planned tonight. Most businesses close for the day except some food stores briefly open. banks close. post office follows holiday schedule with limited mail delivery. special delivery only incoming mail. many dances and watch parties reported.
Sam Lacefield and Sidney Hash both of Kentucky were arraigned in Lawrence Indiana on improper license plates after being arrested for stealing a sedan from Charles Hensley. The pair, enlisted in Fort Benjamin Harrison Eleventh Infantry, pled guilty and await transfer to Indianapolis authorities to face vehicle taking charges.
Marshal Chang Hsueh-Liang was sentenced by a military court in Nanking to ten years after clemency was granted for his rebellion against Chiang Kai-Shek. The surrender and release of Premier Chiang influenced the reduction.
Indianapolis December 31 Judge Herbert E L Wilson prepared to file an order ending the Indiana Railroad receivership and liquidating the system by January 9. The IndianapolisLouisville line, leased by Indiana Railroad from Public Service Company, would continue operation if purchased, while several main lines would be formally abandoned.
A group from the First Methodist Church met Wednesday night to organize a campaign to boost church attendance. District Superintendent Dr. H.L. Martin and Pastor Rev. S.J. Cross attended. Martin explained the plan and participants formed the local organization. A follow up meeting was set for two weeks.
Indiana law requires 1937 license plates on all motor vehicles after midnight tonight. Lieut. Walter Eckert and Seymour police chief Julius Harlow warn there is no extension of time and black and gold 1937 tags must be displayed. Seymour branch and county offices have been crowded as motorists rush to buy plates and prepare operator licenses for the new year.
Verna Belle Cockerham, a Seymour high school student and minor via her guardian James W. Cockerham, sues George E. Mellencamp for personal injuries from a July 28, 1935 automobile collision on U.S. Route 31 near Seymour. Trial began in Monroe circuit court with Seymour residents summoned as witnesses. a jury was seated after lunch.
White River jumped from fourteen inches above the low water mark to four feet six inches this afternoon and continued rising at roughly three to four inches per hour. The rising water followed two days of rainfall.

Charles Haag of this city was convicted by a Jackson circuit court jury on a charge of assault and battery with intent to commit a felony and sentenced to one to ten years. He was taken to the Indiana state prison at Michigan City this morning by Sheriff William Barkman and night officer M. J. Quinn. Haag had remained in Jackson county jail for several months awaiting trial that began Monday.

Alvin Johnson, prominent young Democratic leader and former deputy attorney general, partners with Philip Lutz Jr in a new Indianapolis law office. Lutz will soon be succeeded as attorney general by Omer S. Jackson of Greenfield. Johnson, son-in-law of the Elsners, has wide state connections and is finishing a term as state president of the Young Democrats.
In Tacoma Washington the Mattson family shows renewed confidence that contact has been made with the abducted ten year old Charles Mattson and that he is safe. Reports say relatives and household guests note a calmer mood while authorities pursue possible ransom talks and a gray haired man and a blonde woman were seen leaving the Mattson home in a private coupe.
Andrews High School in Indianapolis was placed on probation until June 1 1937 after Indiana High School Athletic Association findings from a disturbance at a recent basketball game against Warren. Referee O H Phares of Gas City was found not at fault.
Boston reports that child star Jane Withers is under guard after kidnapping threats. Her mother Ruth Withers stated an armed bodyguard accompanies her and sleeps in the adjacent bedroom in their hotel suite.
Detroit December 31 observers warned that rising GM strikes could trigger a nationwide auto industry tie up, with Ford largely spared. UAW action hit five Fisher Body plants, closing nearby Chevrolet plants and idling thousands. Additional sit downs affected Jackson and Detroit firms as unions pressed for higher wages and overtime gains.
