Jackson County records show the 1964 general election cost 43.6 cents per vote, down from 49.8 cents in 1962, the first year machines were used. The 1960 paper ballot cost 64 cents per vote with 15,179 votes cast. Total 1964 turnout was 14,563 registered voters voting at a total expense of $6,454.78.
The Seymour Post Office reports a 1.6 percent rise in machine cancellations from December 1 through 24 compared with 1963, while parcels mailed at the window declined slightly. Heaviest day was December 16 with 36 108 pieces. weather was favorable and deliveries reached homes before Christmas.
Three property damage accidents in Jackson County were investigated by Seymour state police troopers. A 1965 sports car driven by Gerald Ray Spray of Columbus struck a utility pole on U S 31 Alternate north of Jonesville at 9 25 a m today. Another crash at 10 45 a m Tuesday at the Ind 250 and Ind 39 intersection involved Dennis H Meahl 17 of 338 West Seventh Street. the vehicle skidded and rolled once into a field but the driver was not hurt. A truck hit a cow on U S 31 one mile north of Uniontown at 4 15 a m today. the driver was not identified.
Edgar B. Froh, 78, of Crothersville, pleaded guilty in Seymour city court to leaving the scene of an accident. He was fined $5 with $21.75 costs, and a six month farm sentence was suspended if damages are paid within 90 days. The collision, on Second Street near Ewing, involved Gloria Jean Nehrt, 22, with $40 damage to her 1964 car. Froh’s 1957 car had no listed damage.
Nine members of Jackson County Chapter of Indiana Association for Mental Health plan to attend the state group’s legislative dinner January 14 at 6 30 p m in the Murat Temple Indianapolis. Attending from Seymour are Mr and Mrs Robert R Brown Mr and Mrs James Saltsgiver Rep and Mrs Robert E Speckner Jack Emley and Mr and Mrs Robert Krumme. Brown chairs the county committee and Saltsgiver serves on it. The dinner aims to help IAMH staff state house volunteers and legislators work for progress for the mentally ill.
Two new weigh stations along Interstate 65 near Seymour are delayed to late next spring due to water supply and sewage changes. Project engineer Bruce Craig notes contract deadline extended from December 21 as gravel pack wells replace failed water bore and a filter sewage system replaces the percolator type. Despite delays, most electronic equipment, concrete work, run-arounds, parking, and unloading areas are complete. Each station includes three weigh bridges and 12 parking stalls across 27 acres, with west side serving southbound traffic and east side northbound.
One burglary and an attempted break-in were investigated Tuesday night by state police. A front window was opened to gain entrance to the Martin Box Service Station on U S 31 two miles south of U S 50. Troopers Swider and Lewis reported candy chips and bubble gum taken, mostly found outside the store. A separate break-in attempt at Diras Jewelry Store Crothersville was found at 11 45 a m with broken glass at the rear and no entry.
Seymour Post Office will be closed Friday for New Year’s Day with no city or rural mail deliveries and no window service. Lobby hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for lock box mail and outgoing deposits. special delivery and perishables will be delivered. city collection boxes will be picked up at 4 p.m. and mail dispatched on holiday schedule.
Residents of Seymour's northwest section will join the New Year by donating old newspapers magazines and paper materials in a drive by Boy Scout Troop No Two of the First Baptist Church. Door knob hangers mark the route. Drive runs 9 to 11 a m New Year’s Day Friday call 522-2966 for pickup in other city sections.

Saigon forces retook the district capital of Binh Nghia while Viet Cong captured two U S enlisted men and wiped out nearly two government company supports. Two other Special Forces soldiers were killed north of Saigon bringing American combat deaths to 241 since 1961 with 13 missing.
State Police report two deadly crashes less than ten minutes apart near Seymour pushed the 1964 traffic toll to 84 in eight counties. Edward Bailey Jr. died after a 1:10 am one car crash on U S 31 Bartholomew County. His wife Mamie was injured and seven months pregnant. In Johnson County Marvin Fewell died at 7:35 am from a two vehicle crash on U S 31 near Whiteland. Dean Houseman was hospitalized with injuries. Both crashes involved lack of seat belts and investigators noted belts might have prevented fatalities.
Indiana State College band loses the Washington inauguration trip after a coin flip by the Democratic State Chairman. Ball State won the trip, Indiana State raises 5000 toward a 10200 goal, plus a benefit basketball game January 15 to fund the trip.
Seymour city records show December meter revenue of $1 960 70, down from November by $135 15 due to only four Monday collections. Overtime parking ticket revenue totaled $130 for December, versus $264 in November.
