A morning crash on U S Road 50 near the 235 junction east of Medora killed William S. Kindred 32 and Isabelle Bibb 28. The Spear Lumber driver and a passenger were seriously or fatally injured. ice on the roadway blamed for the accidents.
G A Berdon, 77, born in Seymour February 13 1875 and longtime barber, died shortly before midnight Monday at his Lakeland Florida home after a year plus of heart illness. He moved to Lakeland years ago and maintained church ties with East Side Baptist. He and Pearl Baker celebrated a recent golden anniversary. Burial arrangements are pending.
Edwards California airman Leotis Hankins, 20, son of Mr and Mrs John W Hankins of Seymour, recently joined Edwards Air Force Base flight test center. He graduated via GED, enlisted in 1949, completed basic at Lackland AFB Texas and radio mechanic training in Illinois. Hankins is assigned to the 6510th Maintenance Squadron Electronics Repair Branch.
Incoming Jackson county officials will be sworn in publicly on New Year’s Day at 11 a.m. in the Jackson County Courthouse Brownstown. Clerk Joe W. Goss will preside and administer the oath to John M. Lewis along with other county officers including James L. Laupus Lynn Roberts Jr G Roland Kasting Omer Owens Leon E Shaver Ralph Mitchell and appointees Doris M Parcheck and J A Ole Green in a ceremony the public is invited to attend.
Seymour Chamber of Commerce president Frank L. Coyle announces a committee to tackle education development problems. Committee includes Francis P. Myers of Kocolene, Wilbur C. Baldwin, Harold S. Hobson, Dr C A Wiethoff, and Glenn H. Seward of Arvin Industries.
Edwin Lyskowinski, Shields High School Owls coach, spoke to the Seymour Rotary Club about the team and the Lafayette Invitational, praising the Owls despite a current rough record. He stressed confidence and upcoming victories as key to turning the season around.
Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown drew juries for the January term opening Monday January 5 with Judge John M. Lewis set to preside. The term runs 72 days to March 28. Petit jury has forty members and grand jury twelve, selected by commissioners Phil Cordes and W R Butt with Clerk Joe W Gess assisting.
Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2 PM from Flanigan and Reed Funeral Home in Columbus for Christian Henry Weihe 90 who died Sunday night at his home after a two day illness. He left a wife Wilhelmine and an infant son and is survived by two sons four daughters and a brother in Jackson county. Burial is in City Cemetery. The Rev A E Brauer will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home.
Members of Chicakeith Tribe No. 405, Improved Order of Red Men, organize a benefit party at Red Men Hall North Vernon to aid Willard Clarkson, a fellow member who lost his home and belongings in a recent fire. Proceeds go to Clarkson.
Charles Olmstead of North Vernon, now North Vernon police chief, is named secretary and patronage head for Congressman Earl Wilson in the Ninth District. Olmstead will run district headquarters from North Vernon and handle patronage including veteran affairs, with duties coordinating county officials. The appointment marks a peak in Wilsons quarrel with District Chairman Ivan Morgan, with Governor-elect George N. Craig backing Wilson. Olmstead takes effect January 1 amid the district faction fight.
The Rev. George L. Florence announces new officers for Central Christian Church elected at a Sunday board meeting. Elected elders serve three years: George Laraway Frank Mattox Paul Kunz. Deacons three years: Charles Lewis Walter Able George Boas William Kovener Sanford Brock Alfred Tuttle Charles Rush Merle Davis. Deaconesses three years: Mrs Sanford Brock Mrs Francis Nicholson Mrs Frank Mattox Mrs Virgil Satterly. Trustee three years: Paul Douglass. Church treasurer one year: Ralph Lucas. Financial secretary one year: Mrs Robert Vierling.
Two youths faced city court on traffic charges after two separate automobile accidents Monday injuring two people. Marvin V. Allman 16 Browns Town RI was westbound on Tipton Street when he tried to pass a car turning left onto Lynn Street causing a collision. Allman’s car jumped the curb struck a Bethel AME Church bulletin board and road sign and stopped about 200 feet from the impact.
Funeral services were held at St Phillip Church in Pasadena for Mrs J P OMara a former Seymour resident. Died suddenly at 1724 Rose Villa Pasadena she was Elizabeth Reinhart daughter of Michael Reinhart of Seymour and sister to Louis and Katherine Reinhart. She taught at Shields High School before marriage to James P OMara and is survived by husband son Francis granddaughter and a Pasadena brother with several siblings predeceased. She was noted as a lecturer and civic leader serving as president of the St Phillip Altar Society and the Shakespeare Club.
Col. Paul W. Tibbets testified spies from two foreign countries attempted to enter the Wendover Utah base during World War II while the Enola Gay crew trained for the Hiroshima mission. He said the agents were captured in the area but did not breach the base or obtain secret information. Pentagon press officers promised to review the matter as Tibbets spoke at a private screening of a film about his experiences.
In Indiana a coroner's verdict on the fatal shooting of 30 year old Camp Atterbury cook Sgt Clyde W Rose was delayed for further inquiry. Witnesses said Rose was shot by his German bride Ursula 22 who was in hospital for shock. The incident occurred at the Rose trailer near Edinburg after Rose planned to buy a pistol from Cpl Franklin D Puckett.
Russian-born financier and convicted draft dodger Serge M Rubinstein asked the U S District Court for an order barring Attorney General McGranery from taking him into custody or deporting him. McGranery had ordered Rubinstein seized by 3 PM CST for deportation as the long fight nears a decade.
Indiana state superintendent Wilbur Young avoided a legislative conference with eight school groups. He said education bills must pass through his office, inviting groups to review proposals when ready. His stance signals a potential clash with leaders seeking an appointive, not elective, superintendent.
The New York Film Critics chose High Noon as the year's Best Film. They also honored Sir Ralph Richardson for Breaking Through the Sound Barrier and Shirley Booth for Come Back, Little Sheba as Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.
Justice Department official Roy M. Cohn testified that a grand jury report on Communist searches at the United Nations was delayed last fall to avoid it being used as a political football before the presidential election. He cited high level decisions by McGranery aides and officials, with possible Acheson testimony looming. The State Department denied interfering.
E L Hooper was chosen president for the first half of 1953 at the Seymour Exchange Club dinner in the Hotel Walton. Officers elected include Robert Williams as vice-president Donovan Kieser secretary Willis Wienhorst treasurer and several board members. Installation will occur at the January 5 dinner at 6 30 p m.
Mrs. Mary Decelle of St. Albans died of cancer less than a day after giving birth to a 5 pound 7 ounce boy. Doctors praised her courage as she left Kerbs Memorial Hospital to spend Christmas at home, returning for a Caesarean section the day after.
