City observes New Year holiday with schools on vacation and most downtown businesses, banks, post office, and mail services closed Wednesday. Churches and clubs plan watch parties Tuesday night as residents await the new year. Financial institutions closed all day, mail deliveries paused, post office windows shut, and optimism grows for 194? defense era recovery.
The National Youth Administration reports 123 youths employed in Jackson County over six months with about 76 active now. Projects include a refurbished quarter mile track at Emerson Field, park benches and bleachers, light standards, school building repairs, a concrete pier, and a painted prefabricated shelter house in Seymour and surrounding areas.
Officer Albert Patterson of the Seymour post is confined to his home in Jeffersonville with cuts to the face and head after being struck by an automobile while directing traffic near the Charlestown munitions project east of Jeffersonville late Saturday afternoon.
A Seymour man Wayne Johnson was arraigned in city court before Mayor Stanley A. Switzer after a Saturday crash on West Second Street. Washington reports the army defended its award of a 1,387,500 Ford defense contract for midget scout cars. AK Thomas, UAW president, faulted the decision as undermining faith in fair defense labor justice after Sid Ney Hillman protested the order on the defense production board.
Arthur Cox of Columbus, a life term prisoner at Michigan City, received parole from the state clemency commission after serving ten years on a life sentence for kidnapping Gloria Jean Totter, seven, in 1930. The case, tied to insanity pleas and multiple appeals, saw the 1929 life sentence upheld by the state supreme court.
Deputy, 88, dies at his home four miles west of Commiskey at 1 a m. He lived his life in Mt. Zion area and was born January 20, 1852. An active Mt. Zion Methodist Church member, he joined the church early in life.
Thomas T. Branaman Browns town attorney was elected president of the Jackson County Bar Association at the annual meeting Saturday night at the Seymour Country Club. Allan T. Nierman was reelected treasurer and Taylor T. Hoffar reelected secretary. Indiana visitors Frank N Richman and Willian Dobbins attended among others.
Seymour Rotary Club meets in regular semi monthly session at 8 15 tonight at the Elks Home West Second Street. Ralph Droege will lead the program and Walter L Surface, club president, is arranging January 6 and January 13 programs on European events and U S defense.
London endured a fierce German air raid described as a deliberate attempt to burn the heart of the capital. The Associated Press building, Guildhall, Cheapside, and St Paul’s were damaged or threatened as incendiary bombs sparked fires that raged after nightfall, with control only restored hours later.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Liberty Church for Mrs Nancy Adaline Fish of Norman who died December 26. Born September 2, 1869, she was the daughter of Henry Matlock and Mary Matlock. Surviving are two daughters Ita Louden and Estella Beavers, two brothers Otis and James Matlock, ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Associated Press reports Indiana will postpone buying T941 automobile license plates until March 1. Governor Townsend urges law enforcement to observe a moratorium until noon Monday January 13. Governor-elect Schricker pledges a further moratorium until March 1 after taking office.
The Rev. Albert Schmitt longtime Trinity Methodist pastor received honors with wife Mrs Schmitt and daughter Ruth Ann during a Sunday church service. He will start a Mooresville Methodist pastorate next Sunday while Rev Clede Binck of Brownstown succeeds him at Trinity. A 6 PM pitch-in supper followed a miscellaneous program with Ek Pettorman as toastmaster and speeches by local clergy and church leaders.
Washington December report shows total noncultural adjustment payments of 38 42 085 distributed to 5 248 796 recipients in 1938. Prominent beneficiaries include Metropolitan Life Insurance and Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York with 1 078 053 and 305 491 respectively. Most payments fell under 40 dollars with only a small share above.

Seymour police and the involved drivers investigated a Saturday afternoon pedestrian collision on Chestnut Street near Bruce. Joe Finkel of Columbus said his car struck a man walking across the street and he helped him into another vehicle said to take him to the hospital, but the injured man's identity and condition remain unknown as the other car reportedly diverted toward the hospital.
