Bobby Scifres 18 months old son of Mr and Mrs William H Scifres 161 West Harrison Drive enjoys a pre New Year moment as midnight approaches The youngster endures posing for a photographer in minimal clothing with a rattle and hat amid a festive scene for a New Year greeting.
The Jackson County board of commissioners on the second day of a two day meeting at the courthouse awarded numerous 1968 contracts for weed and brush spray paving and road work. Dalton Miller Warsaw submitted the sole bid for weed and brush spray and it was accepted. Bids for bridge steel from Orr Iron Evansville and Logansport Metal Culvert were considered with Orr accepted. Paper Calmenson Company won drag and grader blades. Several bids for heavy machinery and repairs from multiple firms were accepted for convenience.
Chief Robert Gill reports 112 motorists yet to pay two or more delinquent tickets in Seymour. Final day to pay at $1 per ticket is Saturday, with legal action and possible fines up to 50 dollars or 15 days in jail for unpaid cases after December 31.
Seymour Jaycees mail nomination blanks for the 13th Distinguished Service Award to local civic groups with a 6:30 p.m. banquet on January 23 at the Seymour Elks Club. Nominations due by midnight January 17. judges are independent.
A wind driven storm swept the Northeast with knee deep snow inland and rain sleet and freezing rain in fringe areas. The system crossed from the South into New England with heavy snow in Virginia western Maryland Pennsylvania New York and Maine. Coastal areas escaped the worst while temperatures fell to produce sleet and freezing rain.
A wrecker operator, Ben Roth, was seriously injured after being run over by his own pickup when a car sideswiped it on Interstate 65 near the U S 31 interchange north of Seymour. He suffered fractured ribs and chest bruises and was listed in fairly good condition at Schneck Memorial Hospital. Police said Roth had no lights on the pickup as he prepared to pull a stalled wrecker from the median after an earlier crash. A Kentucky man, William Richard Lewis, was driving the car involved and faced possible charges. Additional victims from the first crash incurred minor injuries.
Complaints say a woman claiming Labor Tribune sold ads called on local businesses and collected payments. The organization claimed regular circulation in Seymour but is not listed in directories and had no license or bond on file with the Seymour clerk treasurer.
Gerald Tarnow of Rolling Prairie wins senior division with a state record 67.4 bushels per acre on 130 acres. Marvin Wischmeier of Browns town ranks third with 58.2 bushels and Bradley Hensley Jr. of Williamsport is second at 60.0. Tarnow, 34, is LaPorte County’s outstanding young farmer and used Amsey seed in May with precise fertilization and herbicide use. The Five Acre contest is sponsored by the Indiana Crop Improvement Association and Purdue University Extension.
