City plans face bid hurdles for city hall and fire stations

Seymour board rejects remodeling bid for the former post office as over estimates and takes fire station bids under advisement. L at LaSalle National Bank of Chicago wins $250,000 bond sale with 4 percent interest and $1,195 premium. Reid-Holcomb Co. submits the sole bid for a used backhoe at $4,371, while other bids for the two new fire stations range above $129,421 to $169,183 with alternates. Six bidders sought bonds with out of state offers from LaSalle National Bank and J. B. Hilliard Co. combined for 4 percent plus higher premiums, local Seymour National Bank joins with City Securities Corp. at 4.5 percent and $2,188.50 premium. A special meeting set for Friday will review fire station bids.

Polish Dolls Found In Seymour Store Ignite Easily

Dolls imported from Poland reported to be highly flammable were found in Discount City in Seymour. Fire Chief Glen E. Haley tested several and confirmed the cellulose faces ignite readily. Store manager Mrs. Luella Ellis removed stock and sought guidance from Harvey Bros. headquarters.

John W. Lewis of Crothersville filed with Jackson Circuit Court clerk that he had no personal expenses for the November 8 1966 general election. The committee treasurer Melvin Stephenson filed the panel’s final report showing total expenditures of 18 276 17.

The Seymour board of public works and safety authorized a formal notice to a North Vernon resident to tap onto the city sewer at 811 East Third Street. They approved sewer connections for Carl and Rose Savonen and Seymour Country Club, with 37 residents still noncompliant.

Indiana unemployment claims rise 19 percent in Evansville area

Indiana claims for unemployment insurance totaled 21 261 last week up 19 percent from the prior week. Officials attributed the jump to the Evansville area where 1 800 workers faced a two week inventory layoff, bringing total claims to just over 100 higher than a year ago.

Centenarian Mrs Hardesty Receives Special Social Security Benefit

Mrs. Mary E F Hardesty, aged 104, was signed up for a new Social Security elderly benefit of 35 dollars a month by Ruby A Bechtel, at her granddaughter’s home in Seymour. She will also receive back payments for October November and December. She now lives with her granddaughter at 536 West Fifth Street after a long life in Kentucky with time in Arkansas Missouri and Florida. The Columbus district Social Security office notes eligibility questions may be addressed at the Seymour Post Office or by calling 372 1821.

Schricker Dies at 82 Ends Noted Indiana Career

Former Indiana governor Henry F Schricker died Wednesday afternoon at Starke County Memorial Hospital. He served as governor twice and was a beloved figure in Hoosier politics. The article recalls his early days as cashier at Hamlet State Bank where burglars blew the safe and he carried cash in a suitcase for weeks. Schricker born August 30 observed his 83rd birthday earlier, and his physician Dr. Guy Ingwell noted a sudden heart attack after a long public career. His white hat became famed as part of the Schricker legend.
