Seymour sectional center handles mail for 40 area offices. December 1 to 24 volume rose 50.6 percent from 1960, with machine cancellations up 1.9 percent to 402 900. Parcels mailed fell 2.1 percent to 5 973. Heaviest day was December 18.
Snow packed streets Thursday led to three two car crashes causing damages to five of six autos. No injuries reported with total damage $90. Gorman and Pollard in first crash at Brown and Poplar. Hatton and Eddy second on Centennial near Hancock. Fisher and Stafford third on Vine near Second.
Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrested Raymond Shirley of Tampico on assault and battery after he forced his wife to leave a factory. He faces arraignment in Jackson Circuit Court as his wife seeks a divorce while under a temporary restraining order.
One above zero overnight marked the coldest so far this winter in Seymour and Jackson County with a five a.m. reading of five below at Pendleton, while central Indiana posted colder spots. Snow and slick roads, four inches of snow in Fort Wayne Peru and South Bend, and a slow warmup with highs near 30 expected, with New Year snow possible.
A 10 year old Crothersville Alabama boy, Stephen Klinge, remained in fair condition after a 20 foot fall from a silo while silage duties. He was admitted to Schneck Memorial Hospital at 5 45 p m with pains in legs back and head and scheduled for x rays. Linda Kay Hicks, 13, of Jonesville, fractured left arm from slipping on ice, treated with cast and released. Paul Helton, 38, of North Broadway, had a cut on his right forefinger. two sutures and release followed at the hospital.
Severe low temperatures and snow create slick streets as holiday travelers rush home over the New Year weekend. Traffic predicted to be heavy late Monday and earlier across the weekend due to resumed year end trips. Seymour observes New Year’s Day with city business closed and the Daily Tribune out Monday.
The Seymour post office plans a two day holiday Sunday and Monday with no mail deliveries or window service. Lobby hours 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. allow lock box pickups and outgoing mail drops. Special delivery and perishable mail proceed. outlying boxes are collected around 4 p.m. daily.
Norman S. Lightner announces the 1962 New March of Dimes drive in Jackson County with a $3,500 goal. The campaign runs through Jan. 31 and mailers will be sent Tuesday urging each resident to donate $1. The effort funds research on birth defects arthritis and polio and expands patient aid via treatment centers and clinics.
Jackson County receives 93491 from the U S Department of Agriculture for the 1962 agricultural conservation program. Signup runs January 8 through January 12 at the ASC office in Brownstown with township by township dates. The article lists ACP practices and cost shares for permanent cover soil tests liming fertilizer tree planting and livestock water structures among others.
The office will be closed December 26 through January 2. Dr. Ralph O. Bosch announces the holiday break and will resume operations on January 3.
A fatal blaze in an apartment claimed five young lives. Firefighters battled the flames, extinguishing the fire and recovering victims as investigators searched for a cause and origin of the deadly incident.

Washington AP report notes Mrs Edith Bolling Galt Wilson died at 89 in her brick townhouse once caring for Woodrow Wilson. She endured illness, remained active in party affairs, and spoke of her stewardship during his presidency and poststroke years.
Seymour License Bureau in the Verissage building opens at 1 p m Monday New Year’s Day for prepaid reserved plates to avoid lines before regular sale starts Tuesday Jan 2. Only those who paid by Dec 30 may pick up. Bring 1960 tax receipts or Form 137. Have vehicle purchase date township and, if new, original price.
In Richmond Indiana five children of two sisters died when a four room upstairs apartment burned near Main Street. Thelma Patterson 19 saved three Morris children but suffered facial cuts and burns. Fire Chief Fred Klotz said a gas stove with oven jets on caused the blaze.
Fred W. Wiegman Jr. 15, son of an Indianapolis minister, drowned at Ogles Lake Brown County State Park after breaking through a two inch ice layer. He ran to fetch a bottle tossed by a fellow scout before rescue attempts. Larry Ballinger 17, also of Indianapolis, broke through ice while trying to help. Body recovered seven hours later by state police skin divers as temperatures froze the lake.
