Jackson County assessor Claude R. McCrary urges motorists to provide accurate township of residence when purchasing 1961 license plates. The check aims to match license registrations with assessed vehicles, uncover unassessed cars, and prevent double taxation.
Snow and freezing rain crept over northern and central Indiana prompting warnings for New Year travel. State police noted main roads were mostly clear in the north while the southern third remained slick. Local highway crews worked since Wednesday night to improve conditions on U.S. and state highways amid subfreezing temperatures and limited snow cover.
Seymour common council will meet at 7 30 tonight in its chambers at the city building. The meeting was postponed from Monday because of the holiday and will conduct any business that must be cleared by the end of calendar year 1960. Unanimous agreement postponed it until tonight.
Registration for the 1961 USDA agricultural conservation practices program begins January 9 at the Jackson County ASC office. Twenty one practices are available with signups ending January 21. Farmers are urged to register by township to receive initial funds and plan cost sharing for soil and water conservation projects.
A 22 year old Columbus man Carrol L Vaughn was held by city police for Brown County authorities on vehicle taking charges. He was arrested after a minor accident on West Second street near the Jackson County Farm Bureau Co op Hatchery. A 1952 Studebaker stolen from Harrison Lake was recovered in drivable condition and towed to a local garage. Two teen passengers were cleared and Vaughn named an accomplice only as the other car.
Six bids were received today for grading and excavation work on Brownstown High School property. No contract was awarded pending engineer study by Jerome Richardson and Associates. Bidders include J. E. Crider, Travis Mack, Ralph Parcheck, Pott Schmidt Company, C J Rust Construction Cortland, and A E Wood Excavation Company.
Juvenile court officials with Shields Junior High School Seymour police and Jackson County probation officer Robert L Bennett announced that an attempt by Seymour boys to form gangs modeled on city gangs was blocked. Plans for The Chain Gang and The Blackhawks included insignia on jackets and some parochial students were questioned. Authorities say most were only contacted and no formal organization existed. strong action will follow any future such activity with possible transfer to criminal court for older offenders.
The office will be closed from December 24 through January 2. Dr. Ralph O. Bosch remains available for urgent matters as needed during the holiday period.
Vice President Richard Nixon refused to appear on NBCs Tribute to a Patriot program about Dwight D. Eisenhower citing scheduling conflicts and a policy against TV appearances for the time being. Press secretary Herbert G. Klein said the taping window conflicted with travel and Nixon wished to defer public TV engagements to show respect for President Kennedy. The program is set for January 10 and will cover Eisenhowers career from youth to the presidency.
Three persons appeared in Seymour City Court Wednesday before Judge James L. Laupus. Jerry Isaacs, 16, Cortland, fined 10 and 18.75 costs for reckless driving. cited Friday by Officer Nowling. Donald Crockett, 27, Seymour, fined 15 and 17 costs for disorderly conduct. arrested Tuesday on a warrant and given a suspended 60 day sentence at the Indiana state farm. Charles E. Hunsucker, 44, Cortland Al, fined 15 and 17 costs for public implication. arrested Tuesday by Officer Flynn.
Marjorie Vosburgh 43 and 14 of her 15 children perished when a stove caused a blaze in a wood house near Noyan Quebec 35 miles south of Montreal. Abel Vosburgh escaped with one child but most survived away from home. Father burned hands treated at a relative’s home. Remaining siblings Gladys and Gertrude live elsewhere.
An official Hawaii recount awards Kennedy 115 more votes, giving him 303 electoral votes to Nixon 219. Final national popular totals show Kennedy 34,221,531 to Nixon 34,108,474, with Byrd tallying 15. Hawaii’s result shifts state tallies and leaves 23 states for Kennedy and 26 for Nixon.

DeKalb County judge Os car Mitchell sentenced him to six months in jail for driving a car five miles along a railroad track in front of a fast freight train in Decatur Georgia. Train engineer J B Broom recounted the peril and praised the driver’s nerve but advised action to avoid catastrophe. Police and witnesses described the midnight stunt and the driver’s reluctant admission of guilt.
Raymond C. Bradbury 58 of 422 Calvin Boulevard was in a two car collision on the Clark Memorial Bridge 50 feet north of the Indiana Kentucky state line in Jeffersonville at 12 30 a m Wednesday. He was northbound and rammed Shirley Ann Bedan 25 of New Albany in her stopped car. Minor damage to both vehicles. police investigated and no charges filed.
President elect John F Kennedy hosts a broad review of U S foreign policy with top aides. He names Robert V Roosa as under secretary for monetary affairs and Archibald Cox as solicitor general. A meeting with Senator J William Fullbright is planned at Kennedy's seashore home.
Two Seymour youths Ori M. Staley 17 and Elva L. Staley were arrested by city police on trespassing charges filed in Jennings Circuit Court Vernon officers arrested them about 525 PM on a warrant out of Jennings Circuit Court. They were turned over to Seymour state police for transfer to Jennings County authorities.
