The Seymour Chamber of Commerce lighting competition announced winners after out-of-town judges scored entries Tuesday. Top placers chose prizes from 28 local-merchants prizes at the Public Service Company of Indiana on South Chestnut Street. others were being notified.
A committee meeting is scheduled for the first or second Monday in January to organize a wireman’s league within the Jackson County REMC area. Fred Schiefer of REMC said the group will offer educational programs and up to date information for members. The league aims to improve contact between wiremen and members and educate on wiring codes and device installation with a first general meeting planned for the end of January.
Teddy, a brindle and white Boston bull terrier, disappeared from Mr. and Mrs. Cummings home at 608 East Sixth Street last Thursday after a door blew open. His longtime owner Mrs. Loren Jackson, of Kurtz, and Mr. Cummings appeal for sightings and offer a reward to reunite Teddy with his grieving owner.
Seymour Boy Scouts units will compete in a comedy indoor track meet at Shields High School tonight at 7 30 in the girls gym. The public is invited and admission is free.
Seymour Ministerial Association sponsors annual Week of Prayer from Monday to Friday at 7:30 p m in First Methodist Church. Dr Sam S Hill president Georgetown College Ky will be the speaker each night with a union choir of city church representatives providing singing. Public and church members are urged to attend for spiritual inspiration and unity.
Crothersville plans a Watch Night program at the Church of the Nazarene from 8 p m to midnight on December 31. Local pastors will speak or pray with visiting ministers from Brownstown Haleysburg Peter s Switch and Columbus among participants and guest speaker Rev Roy Vaughn of Cincinnati recently named Peter s Switch Nazarene pastor.
Richard Lange announces Ernest Downs of the Gross Income Tax Division will be at the Seymour license branch on Wednesdays to Saturdays in January 1950 to assist with 1949 annual gross income and bonus tax returns. Taxpayers may consult Downs for help, and returns plus tax due are due by January 31, 1950. Early January use is urged due to World War II Bonus Fund changes.
Noblitt Sparks Industries reported Seymour operations paid nearly 1.75 million dollars to employees in 1949, topping 1948 by over 100 thousand. Sales fell more than 13 percent due to nationwide recession and price reductions. The Seymour North plant builds auto parts for major carmakers, while Seymour South makes Arvin heaters for two manufacturers.
The Anderson Packing Plant will open Tuesday January 3 two miles west of Seymour just south of U S Highway 50 at Pine Ridge. Owner Herbert E Anderson brings plant experience to process beef pork veal sausage luncheon meats and more while offering custom butchering rendering and sausage making for farmers and merchants. Free lunches will be served from 10 a m to 10 p m.

Cass Allen and Stark counties won gold plaques. Bartholomew also placed second. Ten clubs received bronze. Twelve members attended as speakers discussed future plans for 1950. A banquet closed the day.
Harold Schultz of Columbus pled guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and was fined 50 dollars plus 11 75 dollars in costs totaling 61 75 with 90 day suspension of driving privileges recommended by Mayor Donald L Herwig after arrest Wednesday night by city police. James Amos of Crothersville pled guilty to public intoxication and was fined 25 dollars plus 10 00 dollars in costs totaling 35 00 with 90 day sentence to state penal farm imposed by Mayor Heiwig and not suspended.
Deputy collectors Lowell S. Alexander and Albert Cottrill announce a schedule of free federal income tax return help in January 1949. Locations include Seymour post office basement, Jackson County Courthouse Brownstown, Crothersville city hall, Medora State Bank, and North Vernon with varying dates and 8 am to 5 pm hours.
Washington reports three more Soviet ships sighted in the Caribbean as 80,000 troops prepare a major Army Navy Marine Air Force exercise from January to March. The vessels, labeled fishing ships but lacking gear, may be near Vladivostok via St Thomas Panama Canal and Honolulu.
Mrs Mary Sutherland 73 lifelong Seymour resident died at her home 817 West Oak Street after nine days illness. She born February 27 1876 in Columbus daughter of John and Sophia Busam married Samuel Sutherland in 1906 at Seymour. Survived by husband four children two daughters in Seymour one in Columbus one in Seymour a half sister seven grandchildren four step grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral 1:30 PM Saturday Voss Mortuary and 2 PM Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Rev W A Mack. Burial Brownstown Lutheran Cemetery.
World renowned author of Anthony Adverse Allan is to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors as announced by Philip Wylie. Allan died of a heart attack at his home twenty days after his 60th birthday. A simple funeral is planned for Friday at the winter home with relatives and a few close friends invited.
General Electric will terminate its contract with the United Electrical Workers when the pact ends April 1 due to the ongoing jurisdictional dispute with the CIO affiliated union. UE plans a vote at 100 or more GE plants nationwide to decide workers' representation.
Washington reports a federal reserve board estimate that nine dollars of every hundred dollars earned by American families go to federal income tax, the same amount to purchases of autos, furniture and home appliances. About 76 dollars of the hundred cover other consumer outlays, with the remainder saved. The board notes nearly one third of spending units exceeded their 1948 incomes.
Midwestern lawmakers flood Agriculture Department with telegrams and letters over egg prices. Senators Butler and Gillette, plus Representatives Andersen and others, seek action as egg stalls dip to 20 cents a dozen and hogs to 13 cents a pound. Brannan notes an ongoing egg-support plan targeting 37 cents a dozen, but details remain unclear.

Blaine W. Bradfute 65 longtime Bloomington World Telephone publisher died last night in Indianapolis. He led the Bloomington paper since 1910 with his father and remained publisher after their merger in 1943 with Bloomington Evening World. Survived by wife Anna and mother Florence with sons Blaine Jr. and Walter S. active in family business and Monroe County Republican circles. His body taken to Greene and Harrell funeral home in Bloomington.
President Truman will speak before a joint session of Congress next Wednesday. The White House said the date emerged from telephone talks with the Big Four congressional leaders including Vice President Barkley, Senate Leader Lucas, Speaker Rayburn, and House Leader McCormick.
Heavy dew and rain in Miami Beach Florida forced the cancellation of dedication ceremonies for the new lighting system at Luminus park. About 2 000 spectators planned to attend and sing a song titled Miami Beach Sun Is Always Shining.
Henry Snyder a retired farmer died Wednesday at age 95 leaving 118 direct descendants. Surviving are four to six sons 42 grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
