The pursuit widens for two brothers involved in a Salem feud. The younger brother was killed by the town marshal as four brothers tried to storm the Washington County Jail, escalating the case and triggering a manhunt.
A large posse searched Gibson township for Dan and Alonzo Gibson after a Tennessee feud flare up aimed at the jail in Salem. Gilfred Gibson surrendered after being surrounded, while Otis Gibson was killed and Elmer Gerald, town marshal, wounded. Sheriff Trinkle and wife were also injured during the raid.
Seymour merchants observe New Year's Day with all stores closed for the day. Banks and the post office will be shut though outgoing mail will be handled as usual. Mail delivery will be suspended while other services pause for the holiday.
Mrs Estelle Durham Potts of Red Bank New Jersey sues William B Potts a Lock Exchange broker for divorce. She seeks alimony of 1000 dollars monthly and 100 dollars for counsel fees during the pending trial.
Thirty four state cases were dismissed as the Jackson county session resumed after Christmas vacation in Brownstown this morning. Three of four indictments await further action as no arrests had been made. Ed Marhanka of Seymour was granted a divorce from Dora Marhanka with custody of their children and child support ordered at five dollars weekly.
Police plan a strict crackdown on traffic violators as the new ordinance takes effect January 1. Chief Ilomer Phillips urges motorists to obey provisions on improper lights illegal parking and yielding to through streets or face prosecution under the updated rules.
John Nobbe, age fifty seven, died suddenly at his home in Cincinnati Sunday. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon in Cincinnati. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Christian Nobbe of Seymour. His father died two years ago. He had lived in Cincinnati since early manhood, visited relatives in Seymour, and is survived by his widow and a brother, Charles Nobbe, of Seymour.
Miss Laura Marie Fosbrink, a student at Indiana University Bloomington, will spend the Christmas vacation with her parents in Wallonia, returning home after the holiday.
The Seymour Ministerial Association announces the annual week of prayer services at St. Paul Congregational church starting Thursday at 7 30 p m The speaker will be Rev S M Hutchison pastor of the First Presbyterian church The general theme is Jesus and Modern Problems The first half hour of each service will be devotional and led by different leaders.
Sam B Wolf Son's Company reports more than half of its departments have resumed work with the rest to follow by week’s end or early next week. John R Keitz, superintendent, states production was cut earlier this fall and business conditions required a suspension. About 275 men, no women, will have work at the plant.
Mrs. Frank Gable of Three Oaks Michigan suffered severe cuts when the car she rode with her husband collided with three other vehicles on U S road 31 north of the city. She was hurled through the windshield and treated by a local physician. the cars were not badly damaged.
Neal Smith of Brownstown was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Meredith Stewart Saturday night on charges of sale and possession of intoxicating liquor. He was jailed and held pending arraignment. It is alleged he sold liquor to beverage drinkers in Brownstown.
The Sey mouur Lions Club sponsors an exterior lighting contest with two groups. Judging begins this evening with three prizes in each group and additional awards for best church decoration. Residents with six rooms or fewer fall in one group. larger homes in the other.
Seymour Owls resume practice after a rest period and staged a scrimmage at Shields gym against a team of former Owls at 2 pm. Coach Gerald Landis and Western Indiana rivals shape the Owl schedule with a home game vs New Albany drawing extra interest after last spring regional upset.
Stanley Hugh editor of the Christian Herald urged a layman’s conference to decide prohibition leadership amid reports of 400 House members ready to desert the dry cause. He warned dry organizations are inadequate and blamed professional leaders for sidelining lay supporters at Washington meetings.
Charles J Lebline age 73 of Rockford died at his home after nine months of illness following a hip fracture. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 PM at St Paul Congregational Church, with burial in River View Cemetery. He was born August 18, 1857, in Rockford and was a lifelong farmer. Survived by two sons William and George, three daughters Mrs John Lancaster, Mrs John Knott, and Elizabeth Lebline, plus two brothers Woodford and Henry.
Cleveland scientist Dr. George W. Crile presented an exhibit at the American Association for the Advancement of Science showing a synthetic cell that could mend itself and display life like features. The demonstration suggested steps toward understanding cell life and cancer mechanisms, though officials did not claim it as creation of life.
Paris dispatch reports Marshal Joffre as ailing since Sunday with a gradual decline toward death. Doctors say he remains comatose most of the time though he shows brief moments of recognition. Bulletin notes the patient is feeble but stable with a pulse near ninety and a temperature around 37.5 Celsius.
Funeral services for James H. Garrett 78 of Retreat will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Crothersville Baptist Church with Reverend Walter Mosely officiating. A Masonic service will follow. Garrett born November 23 1852 in Shelby County Kentucky married Eliza Collins in 1877 later moving to Retreat and working in brick making. He survived by a daughter, five grandchildren and three nephews.
Washington reports show third party movement cooled as blueprints for realignments emerge mainly in legislative moves. Senators Borah Norris and Moses doubt mass desertions from Republicans while Nye calls for further probe into a $40,000 national committee fund.
A merger closes Saturday as North Vernon National Bank absorbs the First National Bank of Vernon. Vernon Bank assets run about 200000 dollars and cashier E. E. Trapp will join North Vernon National Bank staff.
