Banks postoffice and retail stores will observe a citywide holiday on January 1. Seymour residents plan to ring out the old year and ring in the new with little worry about work. Most businesses will be closed all day with no mail delivery and post office service windows shut.
Subscribers and advertisers are reminded the Saturday issue will be distributed early New Year’s morning. City carries boys will collect Friday instead of Saturday and deliver the issue early Saturday. News matter should be in the office in time to publish. Ministers should submit church notices by noon Thursday.
Banks and financial institutions will be closed all day with retail stores observing the holiday. Factories and most offices will close. only holiday operations will run. Some outlying and downtown stores will stay closed Saturday. many food stores plan Friday night hours. No formal program is planned aside from watch parties and dances. Yuletide lights will be off until New Year’s Eve and taken down next week.
Clifford Morton of Washington Indiana former Seymour resident died Monday night after about a year of illness. He worked in Baltimore and Ohio Railroad offices for several years and lived in Seymour when the B and O offices were here before moving to Washington. Many friends in Seymour mourn his death.
The Indiana welfare board asked the state tax board to restore about 142000 to Vigo county welfare, proposing increases to the old age pension budget to 505000 and the dependent children budget to 177000.
Governor Townsend appoints John L. McNelis backed by the Marion County Democratic Organization as judge of Municipal Court Room 3 in Indianapolis. He succeeds Dewey Myers whose term ends Saturday.
A German free life in a germ free world is studied at Notre Dame where pigs rabbits rats and mice are born in stainless steel units. While growth is superior the animals lack vital digestive elements due to absence of gut germs and may suffer acidity and upset without beneficial microbes.
The Bureau of Accident Prevention will send a sound car to Seymour late this week to warn pedestrians about jay-walking and remind motorists to avoid violations such as double parking speeding and failing to stop at intersections. Roscoe Arnold of the department will oversee the effort which follows Seymour's desire to keep a perfect year end safety record.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Scottsburg Methodist Church for William M. Foster seventy six a longtime publisher of the Scottsburg Chronicle. Burial followed in Scottsburg Cemetery. Foster born Austin June 13 1861 was a pioneer Indiana newspaper man and a prominent Republican voice. Survivors include his son Claude F Foster a brother Edward B Foster and sister Mrs Lola Parius who lived with him.
Sey mour state police post officers continued a death investigation in Rising Sun into Harry Stevenson of Port Royal Kentucky. Stevenson died December 26 after being fatally shot on December 23 with officers gathering statements and making a photographic record of the shooting room.
Harley Hill of this city was fined $1 and costs totaling $11 and sentenced to fifteen days in Jackson county jail at Brownstown after pleading guilty to assault and battery before Mayor W Burkart. Ann Chandler of the Crothersville vicinity was fined $1 and costs totaling $11 on a public intoxication charge. Clyde Donnells and John Lange, both of this city, pleaded guilty to public intoxication and were fined $1 and costs totaling $11 each. Lange was reportedly drinking bag rum.
Sey mour Rotary Club voted a contribution to aid China through the American Red Cross after reading a letter from Hankow Rotary. E. 8. Welch presided as Francis Birge announced received booklets from Tokio Rotary. The meeting also approved attendance reporting amendments and referred crippled-child census matters to the board.
Fort Wayne police report a magazine salesman knocked on E H Brockemeyer’s door on December 18. Brockemeyer refused the sale and the man allegedly rapped on windows and pulled out a radio antenna and ground wires before fleeing. the solicitor could not be located.
Julius G. Harlow was chosen Illustrious Master of Seymour Council No. 38 Royal and Select Masters at the annual election. Theodore P. Cordes was elected Deputy Master and Charles A. Baid Principal Conductor of Work. J. P. McMillan was re elected Treasurer and Samuel F. Hodapp renamed Recorder. Refreshments followed the installation. Harlow is city police chief, succeeding Frank S. Gilbert.
Lawrence Cooper was installed as Worshipful Master of Washington Lodge No. 13 in Browns Town during St. John’s night services. He succeeds V. Sage after a second term. New officers include Charles Lucas Senior Warden Ford Lutes Junior Warden Dr. E. N. Kestner Treasurer Howard Snyder Secretary C. Tinch Senior Deacon Garfield Cross Junior Deacon. Ray Vermilya served as installing marshal. The event followed a 6:30 turkey supper and Master Mason degree conferment.
City health authorities quarantine the home of Fred Kreinhagen at 12245 West Second Street after his son Bobby Lee is ill with diphtheria. This marks the second quarantined residence in the city, as the other house remains under scarlet fever precautions.
Three men robbed the Demotte State Bank shortly after opening, taking about $2500 from the cashier’s cage. Elderly bank president Frank Hart tried to intervene but was disarmed and toppled. Cashier Alex Jansen and stenographer Pearl Vansteeten were present as the robbers fled toward a black Oldsmobile with Illinois plates, no shots fired, and police alerted.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Delaney's Creek Church for Mrs Liza Ellen Hattabaugh age 84 lifelong resident of Washington County. Rev A H Mueller led the service with burial in Hattabaugh Cemetery. She died Friday after a yearlong illness. She was born October 11 1853 in the county to William and Louis Weston. Her husband Samuel Hattabaugh preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons William J and Robert of Monroe Township and one sister Mrs Alice Teagarden of MIddlefork Arkansas.
Public Service Commission examiner R C Gilbert announces a public hearing at 10:45 a m Tuesday January 18 in Kurtz at the Masonic hall. The Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific Railroad requests converting Kurtz freight and passenger station from an agency to a non agency station.
Harvard Medical School and Boston City Hospital researchers led by Dr. Leo Alexander warned people shocked and apparently dead should not be pronounced dead until at least twelve hours of artificial respiration or until rigor mortis appears. They cited census data on electrical injuries and lightning deaths, noting high recovery rates when resuscitation starts quickly and continues long.
United States Gunboat Sacramento evacuates about 280 American refugees from Tsingtao Harbor in Shantung as Japanese forces close in. Sacramento bound for Shanghai, with destroyer Pope and cruiser Marblehead nearby, as Tsingtao falls and Shantung towns report Japanese advances.

Morgan aged sixty four former Republican chairman of the Fourth Indiana district He was elected in 1918 after leading the Decatur county Republican committee His home was Greensburg later moving to Indianapolis Survivors include his widow Mrs Bertha Morgan a son Henry H Morgan of Mitchell and a sister Mrs Lulu Mason of Greensburg Burial was at Greensburg after services at the Downey Avenue Christian Church
Washington officials say President Roosevelt will submit a balanced 1938-39 budget to Congress on January 4. Relief costs threaten the balance. other items may be cut. Defense spending may top a billion dollars, while major measures in the works include anti-trust reform and tax revision.
Associated Press reports Gen. Miguel Aranda's relief column broke through government posts northwest of Teruel in a fierce counter action to free 6,000 besieged in the fallen city. Insurgent and government dispatches describe heavy fighting near the provincial capital as the siege continues and Teruel remains contested 135 miles east of Madrid.
General Motors president William S. Knudsen announced a planned workforce reduction of about 30,000 employees in the United States effective January 1. Michigan layoffs are estimated at around 20,000 as plants move to a three day week totaling 24 hours. He cited the recession and high inventories as reasons and expressed hope for a temporary measure with a return to normal employment in spring.
