Highways are mostly clear of snow while county roads remain blocked by drifts. After a record cold of twelve below zero on Thursday the temperature rose to seven above Friday night. A light snowfall overnight prompted residents to shovel and sweep walks.
Weather researcher Riley Goble reviewed local records and found Seymour posted a lower minimum in 1980 than Friday. The dates January 18 1930 and January 23 show twelve below and thirteen below respectively, settling claims on the duration since twelve below.
Rural mail carriers on Seymour and county post offices faced severe winter hardships as deep snowdrifts hindered deliveries. Roads reopened gradually, coal dealers saw higher demand, and garages in Seymour stayed full with cars frozen or damaged by the cold. Indianapolis reports Christmas blizzard costs forced overtime for state highway crews.
Mrs. Addie F. Ireland aged sixty five was found dead in her Seymour residence at 502 West Brown by her son Mort Abell and Officer Melvin Jerrell. She had heart disease and was believed dead since 1 a m. Funeral set for 2 p m Monday at Voss Mortuary with Rev. Albert Schmitt. burial Riverview Cemetery.
Mrs John W Lucas wife of Dr John Lucas of Brookville and sister of Henry Lucas of Brownstown died Friday morning. Dr Lucas formerly lived in Brownstown and many relatives and friends mourn her death. Funeral arrangements not learned.
The Chicago Association of Commerce reports 191 projects started in 1935 with a total outlay of 38.34 million dollars, compared with 109 programs and 4.54 million dollars in 1934, marking a dramatic rise in industrial construction.
On January 5 the Seymour Ministerial Association will host a city wide celebration of the 400th anniversary of the English Bible translation. A 4 PM Vesper service at First Methodist Episcopal Church features Rev. Dr. Robert W. McEwen of Hanover College discussing the Bible's English arrival in 1535 36 and implications of vernacular use. Sunday School teachers and Scripture students are urged to attend.
About thirteen hundred passenger auto licenses for 1936 were issued as the licensing rush started. Mrs Ediah Wolff at the local license office said roughly half of motorists still lack plates and predicted a heavy rush next Monday and Tuesday. The office will operate this afternoon until 5 and until 3 on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. No plates will be issued New Year’s Day.
State and Federal highways outside towns were in good condition after snow removal and sand application on curves. Route 135 near Brownstown to Freetown was briefly closed Christmas Day but soon reopened. City streets remained hazardous with few minor accidents reported.
Rosa Bell Amick seventy two widow of Albert Amick died at her home on Road 7 near Scipio Jennings county after weeks of illness. Funeral services will be at Scipio Presbyterian Church at 2 PM Sunday conducted by Rev A R Miles. Burial in Scipio Cemetery. She leaves two sons Chester and Robert Amick a daughter Mrs Mary Childs five brothers Bert Amick Elmer Amick C T Amick J P Amick Charles Amick and an aunt Marion H Amick.
Mrs Nany Emery fifty nine an invalid was under care after a crash on State Road 67 east of McCordsville Indianapolis area in which her husband William Emery sixty six was killed. Emery lost control on slick pavement causing the car to skid into the side of a truck.
Anderson Indiana December 28 Prosecutor Cecil White filed affidavits accusing Pau Pierce and Donald Joseph gunmen awaiting trial in Indianapolis of robbing the Mace Grocery here of 1800 dollars on November 28 If acquitted of slaying Detective Sergeant Orville Quinnette they could face charges of robbery while armed and grand larceny in this county
Mrs. Joe Kinner of Franklin travels to Brownstown to visit her parents Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Heller while in town.
William Henry Knight, age 30 and ex convict known as a slayer of four, was shot by possemen after being cornered in a Butte home. He had held James Gilligan and family captive and admitted killing a Seattle officer and three others before ending his one man reign of terror. Knight died hours later from a shot to the head as he fled the scene.
A field agent from the Indiana Gross Income Tax division will be in Seymour early January to assist taxpayers with annual returns. Mrs. Edith Wulff announced the visit at the auto license bureau. Returns are required for all who earned over 1,000 in 1955 and must be filed by January 30. The agent will help with unusual or technical problems related to return preparation.
A. M. Arnett of the University of North Carolina claims proof that President Wilson wanted to enter World War I in 1916. He presented his case at the American Historical Association meeting in Chattanooga and cites a 1921 letter from Champ Clark to C. H. Claudy describing a sunrise conference with Wilson, Kitchin, and Flood.
Federal agents announced Caleb Milne admitted fabricating a kidnapping to gain acting job exposure. Milne vanished December 14 and was found five days later near Doylestown, Pa. Hoover said Milne acted alone, signed statements after questioning, and planned the hoax in early December to secure work.
Reports from New York show the Milne kidnapping hoax confession revealed after nine days. J Edgar Hoover noted the case does not count as an actual kidnapping in FBI records. Authorities say the inquiry spanned Pennsylvania New Jersey and New York as agents pursued the false tale.
The Rev. Fred Blouse assumes leadership at the Chorel of the Nazarene. He will deliver his first sermon at 10 45 Sunday morning and lead evangelistic services at 7 30 Sunday night. Blouse previously led the Nazarene church at Shelbeville and spoke at local revival meetings. His family will relocate to Seymony in January as the congregation welcomes him.
A strong earthquake shock was recorded at 8 11 a m today by the Alipore Observatory seismographs in Calcutta. The epicenter is calculated about 1 190 miles from Calcutta.
French Chamber resumes debate on Laval's government as criticism of foreign policy grows. Observers foresee a close confidence vote possibly triggering a ministerial crisis if Laval or key ministers lose support while deputies prepare to speak on policy.
