USDA alters farm storage loan program to curb on-farm capacity

The U S Department of Agriculture announced December 13 changes to the farm storage and drying equipment loan program. The annual production replaces two-year storage bases, silos and related equipment face loan exclusion, concrete and wiring costs no longer eligible, maximum loans drop from 35000 to 25000, and the interest rate rises from 46 to 50 cents per hundred dollars. Officials say eased storage needs due to rapid on-farm facility construction and higher exports prompt the adjustment to align program activity with current storage conditions and reduce FY 1974 federal outlays. Kenneth E Frick notes on-farm facilities remain valuable but credits the pace of building and export growth for this shift. Since inception through FY1972, about 640.9 million has been loaned to farmers.
