The Jackson County board of commissioners opened bids for six stone bids two ready mix bids and two gravel bids during a two day special meeting at the Brownstown courthouse. Bids entered covered crushed stone ready mix cement white river gravel pea gravel and bar run with bidders including Brownstown Stone Oolitic Ground Limestone Bedford Hoosier Limestone Salem Scott County Stone Scottsburg Meshberger Stone Columbus Berry's Materials North Vernon Burnside Inc Spray Sand and Gravel Kenneth Bahan. Additional bids for lumber bridge materials tires fuel and other highway supplies were also received and contracts to be awarded before the meeting ends Thursday. The courthouse will be open until noon Saturday and closed until 8 am January 2.

Record Cold Tops the Week as Snow Fades In
Temperatures dropped to eight below zero in the region marking the coldest spell of the new winter season. Weather officials warn the weekend will stay 10 to 15 degrees below normal with highs in the upper teens to low 30s and chances of light snow tonight and Thursday. Betty Diana Sierp, a senior at Browns Town Central High, daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Sierp of Ewing, won Jackson County DAR Good Citizen for 1967 68 after essays from five county high schools were judged. Local DAR will honor all five with pins and certificates at a April tea. Betty’s essay goes to the Indiana DAR for state judging.
