The 1963 Seymour city elections cost 5,644.04 total with voting machines, equaling 74 cents per mayoral vote, well below 1959 when paper ballots were used at 97 cents per vote. Primary and general results show 3,367 votes in May and 4,260 in November, with costs of 2,807.40 and 2,836.64 respectively.
The Jackson County Red Cross seeks furniture and clothing for a four member Hanners family from Little Acres north of town after a Christmas night fire gutted their four room home. The family, now staying with relatives, needs a refrigerator beds and bed clothing and children’s clothes. Donations can be made through the Red Cross at 319 West Second Street. This marks the third such fire in the area within two weeks.

Keith Brown former Greensburg Producers Market branch manager arrives in Seymour to take over as Seymour Producers Market branch manager from retiring Scott Coup. Coup to become farm director at local radio station after 30 years in Seymour. Brown, 43, started in the business in Cass County and has a wife Doris and four children.
A national Associated Press survey of 1,361 Republican county chairmen shows Richard Nixon gaining ground as Barry Goldwater loses support since President Kennedy's death. Goldwater remains the front runner, but his share drops from 85.1 percent to 44.2 percent in the two polls.Polls also name Gov. William Scranton as a strong candidate and potential nominee, while some responders call the nomination still open to a dark horse.
Seymour post master Ivan R. Love announced all aliens in Jackson County must file address reports during January. Last year 28 aliens registered, with entries from Germany Canada England Ireland France Austria and Czechoslovakia. Reports are due within 30 days of Jan 1, with 10 days after return if abroad.
Two 15-year-old girls escaped from the Indiana Girls' School in Clermont on Thursday night by climbing down a second floor fire escape. Officials traced their footprints in snow to U S 136 but lost the trail. The escapees were identified as Diana Bell of Marion and Patricia Maitland of Michigan City.
Seymour board of public works and safety approved Barrett law assessments for improvements on Eighth Street Elm to Emerson Drive Brown Street Broadway to Laurel Street and rejected only Brown Street objections. The motion included $56 to replace a noncompliant water cooler and several city survey instruments were filed for record. Speed limit changes on U S 50 near the city were announced by the Indiana State Highway Commission.
Jackson County reports a brief warmup vanishing today as subnormal temperatures persist toward the New Year. The five day outlook shows 10 degree below normal swings south with daytime highs in the 20s to 30s. Warmth briefly melted snow, no major snowfall expected, flurries near Lake Michigan possible. tonight lows 10 to 22, Saturday highs in the 20s north and 30s elsewhere. A low of 27 degrees was registered this morning.
Two people were treated for minor injuries at Schneck Memorial Hospital. Terry Daugherty, 18 months, cut his left heel while riding his brother’s bicycle and was treated and released. Mrs. Sherman Brock was X-rayed for injuries from a fall at home and released.
Royal Garrard living above a Needham, Indiana, grocery store woke to breaking glass and nabbed five Franklin men as they loaded 55 cartons of cigarettes and 35 boxes of chewing gum into a car. The suspects, all from Franklin, were identified as Stephen Klinck 20 Jack Anderson 19 Leonard Pogue Jr 19 Robert Hughes 20 and William Hughes 19.
Elmer Blackmer, renowned Midwest organ recitalist, will perform on the 43 rank Casavant organ at Immanuel Lutheran Church Sunday at 4 PM. A Wittenberg University instructor and Dayton organist, he will offer Christmas pieces by Langlais Wright Bach and Walcha among others. Public invitation is extended.
