Seymour tops Indiana for no automobile fatalities in eleven months of 1937 among cities with 5000 to 10000 population per the state department of public safety accident summary. Madison and Bicknell also report no fatali ties despite smaller populations.
With just over four days left in 1937 Julius G. Harlow Seymour police chief reiterates prompts for careful driving and pedestrian caution to maintain Seymour’s perfect safety record. If maintained through December 31 the city would rank first in Indiana among towns with 5 000 to 10 000 residents.
Seymour tops the county list with a population of 7508 while Madison and Bicknell follow in second and third due to smaller populations. Jackson county records a 41.7 annual fatality rate per 100000 with ten motor accident deaths in 1937 before December and nine in 1936.
Edwin Heideman was fined 1 and costs totaling 11 and sentenced to sixty days at the state penal farm after pleading guilty to public intoxication before Mayor C W Burkart. W F Kirby, a transient, also pled guilty to public intoxication and was fined 1 and costs totaling 11. Kirby was arrested on East Second street Friday night. Heideman by Chief Julius G Harlow Friday morning at the city police station.
No one was injured Friday near noon in a two car collision two miles north of Crothersville on US 31. A coupe driven by William T. Thompson of Louisville moved north and a 1936 coach driven by Cleo H. Gorman of Seymour rural route 3 drove south. Officers Gray and McMillan said the crash happened when Mr. Gorman skidded while braking.
The U S weather bureau predicted lower temperatures today after a weekend that was warm and sunny throughout Indiana. Cold and unsettled conditions may continue for several days according to the forecast.
The Columbus Republican notes a realignment of Public Service Company operations after the split with Northern Indiana Power. A new Columbus division HQ opens January 1 with R. C. Rockefeller as head, managing Seymour, Brownstown, Columbus, Bedford, Shelbyville, Bloomington, Franklin, Greenwood, Mitchell, Orleans, French Lick, North Vernon, Martinsville and Spencer. Existing leaders Frost, Pace, Murley, Gutting will continue in their posts.
Mrs Maud Swain of West Second street traveled to Columbus to attend funeral services for her grandson Stephen Thomas Swain age eighteen and a half months. Services were held at Hathaway Funeral Home with Dr FE L Hutchens pastor of Columbus Methodist Church in charge. Burial followed at Garland Brook Cemetery. The infant died about 8 o'clock Christmas Eve at home in Columbus after a two week illness with spinal meningitis. He was the son of S F and Margaret Maley Swain, well known in the city.
Ten arrests were made last week by officers at Seymour state police post in the drive to make Indiana highways safer. Half the arrests were for speeding through towns and villages, three for passing on hills and curves, one for disregarding a stop sign, and one for improper lights. Two personal injury motor vehicle accidents were investigated by state police during the week.
Jackson County REMC moves toward start of rural electrification with bids this week for wire insulators hardware and other project supplies. National REA official J Owen and Col Willard Boyle oversee the experimental county setup promising enhanced supervision and direct benefits to the county residents. Poles are already being purchased with bids on remaining items due soon.
Victor McMillan of Vallonia, 24, suffered an above knee amputation in the auto-bus collision on U.S. Road 31 50 near Seymour. He is recovering at Sehneck Memorial Hospital. Anita Trowbridge and Mrs. Mary Winkler, both riding with him, have minor injuries and are improving. Twenty-eight passengers and driver Loren Fisher of Indianapolis escaped injury.
Seymour police logged two minor accidents over the weekend. At 9:15 this morning Walter Kasting of Seymour drove north on Walnut Street into a eastbound coupe driven by Thomas Pheral of Crothersville on Bruce Street. both vehicles sustained slight damage. On Saturday at 6:30 Guy Morris of Columbus struck a parked Ervin Kasting vehicle opposite the Seymour Greenhouses on Ewing Street. both cars were slightly damaged.
San Pedro Cal December 27 Rear Admiral David M Lebreton announced the Navy will continue the Special Security destroyer patrol of the Pacific coast started last week. He said leaves of personnel connected with the patrol had been cancelled but others had not.
Cleveland mourns Newton D. Baker former Secretary of War with simple funeral services in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. The body lies in state under military guard prior to afternoon rites and burial at Lake View Cemetery near Garfield, Rockefeller, Hanna, and Herrick graves. Baker died Christmas Day at 66 from coronary thrombosis. The son recalls a sudden death and a life of pacifism and public service.
The Rev Ottomar Krueger president of Concordia College Fort Wayne Ind gave an illustrated lecture on his Holy Land pilgrimage at Immanuel Lutheran Church Sunday night. Slides of Christ related scenes formed the backdrop to a scriptural talk fitting the Christmas season. Krueger is visiting the city with family and has local ties from Seymour and Immanuel Lutheran School.
Violent deaths from a wide Christmas celebration reach at least 500 as cars fill highways and homeward travel surges. Accidents kill many. gunfire, suffocation, burning and other causes add to the toll. States list 41 in Pennsylvania to 38 in Illinois, with numerous cases nationwide.

Low income firms would pay 12 14 and 16 percent with no undistributed profits tax, mid sized firms face a new intermediate class, and high income firms could face a 16 to 20 percent undistributed profits tax plus normal rates.
