Seymour endured the coldest night in more than a decade as temperatures plunged to twelve degrees below zero. The Rockford pumping station reading marked a record for this season and several prior winters, leaving residents describing the spell as unusually severe for midwinter.
The Tribune office received a recurring call asking how cold it was last night. The clerk reported twelve below as the temperature, surprising many residents who had not realized Thursday night marked the coldest night of the season.
Temperatures fell to twelve below zero after a thawless night as the day began at sixteen above zero. By afternoon the mercury rose to fourteen above. Chief Julius Harlow urged children to stay off streets and motorists to drive with caution. Fire danger rose as furnaces strained. Crawfordsville logged thirteen below, Louisville one below.
Theological students from across the nation opened their fifth national conference at Butler University Indianapolis. The event spans two days and leads into the twelfth quadrennial convention of the student volunteer movement at Cable Tabernacle. Scheduled speakers include Archbishop William Temble of York and clergy from Bloomington Williamstown and Massachusetts.
An attorney for Paul Pierce and Donald Joseph requests a change of venue from Marion County which would postpone their murder trial for the killing of Detective Sergeant Orville Quinnette. Indiana law requires the judge to grant venue changes in murder cases. trial was set for January 8.
A severe cold snap across at least 28 states caused about 200 deaths from traffic crashes exposure fires carbon monoxide drowning and other causes. 86 traffic accidents and 55 exposure deaths lead the toll with 17 fire deaths and 24 other fatalities.
Congressman Eugene B. Crowe of Bedford was guest of honor at a large appreciation banquet in the Greystone Hotel Ballroom Bedford attended by over 200 people from fifteen counties. Irving Koetter led the Lawrence County Young Men’s Democratic Club as sponsor with Edward Ellison presiding. The event featured Rudy Deering’s orchestra, songs including Happy Days Are Here Again and Sidewalks of New York, welcomes by Ellison, and speeches by Koetter Johnston and W. B. Clark with Crowe’s remarks in reply.
William Broderick brother in law of L J Eckstein of Cincinnati and former local resident died at 4 AM Thursday in Anderson after a two week illness from a stroke. He had many friends here though never a resident, and several local relatives plan to attend the funeral. William Eckstein will travel to Anderson tonight.
In Shelbyville Indiana on December 27 a hunting trip ended in the accidental death of Rev Arville Owens pastor of the Methodist Protestant Church. His brother in law Cecil Rogers, 28, stated Owens discharged the shotgun while removing it from his car.
Six month old William Joe Pursifall suffocated at a farm home west of here after being placed in a folding bed by an older brother during a children's game. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Perry Pursifall and six siblings.
Brazil Perry Morris, a mine operator, escaped death by minutes when a boiler explosion wrecked buildings at the Colliery. He had just left the boiler house and avoided the blast.
Frank Bruning died at 10 oclock Thursday night in Cincinnati from injuries from a car crash. He was a well known Seymour resident, survived by his widow three daughters and one son. He was uncle to Clara Louis and John Bruning and Edward Dreese all of Seymour. Funeral plans are not announced.
Sey mour fire department battled a blaze in the cab of a C M St P locomotive near the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul depot on Broadway and the Baltimore Ohio tracks. Ice and extreme cold hampered crews as Engineer Guthrie and Conductor Griffith described the fire jumping to cab curtains and blazing upward before control was established.
Funeral services for Mary Wigington aged 57 of Englewood New Jersey will be held late Saturday afternoon at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour. The burial will follow after a short service in the mausoleum conducted by Dr A A Cohn pastor of the First Baptist Church. She died after a stroke at her Englewood home Thursday morning and was the daughter of Joseph Stein with many relatives here. She formerly lived in this city.
William Bushong and Otto Switzer, township constables, faced federal and St. Joseph county grand jury charges for impersonating federal and state officers. Indictments allege the pair accepted 300 to 400 dollars from liquor store owners after threatening raids. The constables claim they are victims of a frameup.
The First Baptist Church marks the start of Dr. A. A. Cohn’s twelfth year in Seymour with informal services. Since 1924 he has led debt payoff, renovations, and program expansion, growing church school and youth activities while guiding community service and state Baptist work.
Willard Burton of Crothersville, 22, had a sentence for resisting an officer suspended after he agreed to compensate Patrolman Roy Lee for damaged trousers from a tear gas incident. He was fined 11 dollars and 30 days at the penal farm, plus earlier a separate $11 fine for public intoxication. He remains jailed pending final settlement of fines.
Montevideo reports Uruguayan government will expel Soviet minister Alexander Minkin and his staff signaling a break in ties with the Soviet Union. The move stems from cross border unrest linked to the November Brazilian uprising and alleged Soviet involvement.
