Fifteen Die in Coal Train Blast in Montgomery County
A boiler explosion on a coal train near Montgomery Virginia killed fifteen miners and injured over twenty as the locomotive torn apart sent debris across a 100 yard area. Fireman D L Oxley and engineer W M Blank were among the dead. The blast occurred about 5:21 a.m. CST as workers rode to the mine, with many survivors rushing to hospital. The Montgomery community, home to about 2,200 people, is in the heart of the state’s coal region.
