Jackson county council allowed most claims reported by county auditor D W Thompson. They rejected funding for a Leymour attendance officer salary, leading to a pending court suit by Mrs Annette fest to compel the appropriation. Total taxes for 1931 set at 735871.42 with state share 102508.20 and county 127940.46.
The Rev. John Wesley Huber D D aged 73 former Trinity Methodist pastor, died Friday at his Columbus home. Funeral Monday at Market Street Methodist church Louisville with Rev. B E Fischbach officiating. He served Louisville churches 1897 1899 and led the Louisville district 1899 1903. Survived by two sons and two daughters including Edwin Huber, a Louisville attorney.
Monticello Indiana December 27 Robert Ross principal of Monticello and Union township high school will become superintendent of schools succeeding Harry F Elder. Elder resigns to accept appointment as director of teacher training in the administration of George C Cole state superintendent elect of public instruction.
Heavy snow and ice crippled services in Seymour and Jackson County with 200 to 250 city telephones out of order and many county lines down. State highway crews spread gravel on icy routes to prevent skidding as weather bureau forecasts cold, fair conditions for Sunday. A near‑collision damaged a snow scraper on U S Route 50 when a driver struck it. no injuries reported.
Charles Hawkins facing possession of liquor charge pleaded not guilty in city court and will have the case moved to circuit court as Browns Town authorities transport him from the local jail. Deputy Edward Dreese and Police Chief Homer Phillips led raid at Hawkins home where a Falls City label bottle held about a pint of liquor. He remains jailed pending circuit court trial.
Captain Malcolm Campbell introduces the Blue Bird racing car with 1450 horsepower 12 cylinder engine and 38 inch diameter wheels. He notes a wind tuned low profile body minimizes drag as he plans a January run on Daytona Beach to push the speed record beyond 240 miles per hour.
A large delegation from the Seymour tribe of the Improved Order of the Red Men attended the county meeting in Medora Friday evening to celebrate the first anniversary of the tribe there. Noble Clark fifty two a former Baltimore and Ohio mail clerk died at his Brownstown home after a two year illness due to tuberculosis. He leaves a widow a son Roy a dentist and brothers and sisters in Kirksville Cortland Iowa Brownstown and nearby towns. He was a church member and Knight of Pythias. Funeral at Brownstown Presbyterian Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery.
Chairman Johnson of the House veterans committee charged a national lobbying racket soliciting veterans' signatures for cash. He cited about 1,000 petitions with 50 names each and claimed the organization demanded a 10 cent tribute from signers. The scheme supposedly spread from the west coast through Texas to Washington, advertising newspaper work and offering participation in the scheme.
Shirley McNeely a 35 year old World War veteran from Tennyson near Boonville Indiana surrendered to Sheriff George Ward and confessed to hammering to death his mother stepfather and uncle in a fit of insanity. He said he planned to kill his wife and her relatives but his mind cleared and he fled to Evansville before surrendering. The victims were Mrs. Mike Breidenbach 60 Mike Breidenbach 60 and Thomas Watson 60. He denied motives citing family troubles and hazy mind.
Frank Daily aged 64 prominent in Indiana banking circles and active in oil projects in the Southwest died after a long illness. Rites held at the Elk’s home in Lebanon following his death Thursday night. He helped organize fire prevention programs and was connected with the Lebanon National Bank founded with his father.

Havana reports a thwarted revolutionary plot to topple President Machado before Christmas Eve. Col Aurelio Hevia and other conspirators were arrested and sent to Cabanas fortress as arms and a demonstration were secured. Officials say nationalists and communists and some students were involved.
Beverly Hills reports Harold Lloyd and Mildred Harris Lloyd expect an addition in March. Mrs. Lloyd says stork is due early in the month and the comedian hopes for a boy. The couple already has two daughters, Mildred Gloria, 6, and Marjorie Elizabeth, 5.
