Slippery highways on Christmas Eve and Day caused several minor accidents in Jackson County with no critical injuries. Martin Stockamp fractured his right leg after being struck while walking for fuel near Rockford on U S Road 31.
A day of special services at the First Baptist church will mark the opening of the seventh year of Pastor Niev. AL AL Cohn. Details and arrangements continued on page 2.
Krmal Tidd pleaded guilty to public intoxication and was fined 10 with costs 19 and released after a stayed sentence. Harry Bohnenkamp pleaded not guilty with trial date not yet set for intoxication charges. Mayor C W Burkart presided in city court.
Kansas City December 26 A 23 year old youth Charles Leonard Duncan was held after confessing he tried to extort $25,900 from R A Long head of Long Bell Lumber through two notes. Detectives cited misspelled words as key clues in linking the crime to the suspect.

Three men Paul Sheldon Charles Lightfoot and Harry Baldwin were moved from the city jail to Owen county jail in Spencer to face robbery charges tied to the Sunday night theft of a clothing store and Gilbert filling station. Authorities say they confessed to the local police and face arraignment in Spencer. if not convicted they may be returned to this city.
The 1931 plates went on sale this morning at the local office, with 3,200 passenger plates and 600 truck plates available. The Aetna Life Insurance Company purchased the largest single allotment of fifteen sets, while William Sanders was the first buyer on East Second Street. Frank Mayr Jr. expects a February 1 close for purchases as owners rush to display the new plates with blue letters on an old gold background.
Thieves entered Beldon's Grocery No 2 at Blish and Fourth streets breaking a glass window and stole cigarettes cigars and candy. About five cartons of cigarettes one dozen cans of tobacco and candy were taken. Police report no clues yet as investigators pursue the case.
Senator George W. Norris received an invitation from John Dewey to bolt the Republican Party and form a third party. Dewey, former philosophy professor at Columbia, argued Norris was not a true Republican and urged him to lead a new political group.
William H. Wells aged fifty one died at his home near Surprise after a four week illness with pneumonia. Funeral services will be held at Acme church on Sunday at 1 PM with burial in the local cemetery. He was born in Surprise and worked as a farmer and timber dealer. Surviving are wife and three children Paul Wells Terre Haute Mary Anthony Surprise and Ruth Wells at home. Also surviving are brother George W. Wells Terre Haute and sisters Laura Berry Terre Haute Vina Ford Indianapolis Ida Miller Los Angeles.
Arthur Becker of this city was high point man at the Honeytown Fish and Game Club trap shoot held Christmas Day at Louis Harlow’s farm near Honeytown. He hit 22 of 25 for the best score of the day, with Harold Multman tallying 18 and Andrew Harlow 16. Many local members attended the event as part of the club’s frequent meets.
A seven foot long land tortoise weighing about 2100 pounds has been mounted for the American Museum of Natural History.
The United States Civil Service Commission announces an open competitive examination to fill the postmaster vacancy in this city. Candidates must be U S citizens and may obtain full details and applications from A P Charles at the local civil service office or from the commission in Washington.
Christmas celebrations in Seymour were gentle with family gatherings and church programs. The Seymour Welfare Association coordinated baskets of food and gifts for 776 families, distributing through church, club, school, and community volunteers to avoid duplicates.
Neighbors saved most furniture from the Rumph residence near Pleasant Grove before it burned late Wednesday afternoon. Lawrence Phegley spotted the blaze and used the Rumph telephone to alert the Acme switchboard, which notified neighbors as the family was at the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. Walter Rumph learned of the fire in Surprise and rushed home to find the house largely destroyed. The family spent Christmas at the Rumphs’ nephew’s home.
Prediction from the U S Weather Bureau at Indianapolis indicates probable snow and colder conditions tonight and Saturday for this state region. A three inch snow blanket covered the Seymour water pumping area on Thursday and the year 1930 brought extreme cold, drought, and tornadoes across the Midwest with significant damage and casualties.
Tim Conners, a 68 year old motorman, retired after 30 years with the Interstate Public Service Company. He joined the Seymour interurban line in 1900 after service on Indianapolis railways, helping extend routes to Franklin Columbus and Seymour through years of growth. Conners lives in Greenwood and leaves many friends along the line.
Kin Hubbard, creator of Abe Martin and Abe’s Various neighbors, died suddenly at his Indianapolis home from a heart attack. He was 62, born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, and gained fame with the Indiana born caricature during Bryan campaigns and through his annual Abe Martin books. His last work, Abe Martin’s Broadcast, appeared before the holidays.
About two hundred people died nationwide in Christmas week accidents and fires from coast to coast. The middle west saw roughly eighty fatalities with incidents in Whiting Indiana and other locations. Auto crashes caused by slick roads led the deaths, while poison liquor and gun violence also claimed lives in several states.
James Phillips former Seymour resident died Tuesday night at his San Antonio Texas home. He was active in the local automobile business and had lived in San Antonio for years. Survived by widow and daughter Beatrice. Funeral was to be held in San Antonio.
Associated Press reports 33 dead and more than 70 injured after quakes hit La Poma revealing survivors terrified by a thunder like roar as masonry collapsed. Relief teams reached the mountain town and described cracks in the earth, hot water oozing from crevices, and residents fleeing to open fields.
