Snow prospects faded as brief flurries yielded no accumulation. Weather officials warned a cold Christmas Day with a five day outlook six to ten degrees below normal and scattered slick spots on northern highways.
Royal W Bud Allman 37 of Seymour started a life sentence for second degree murder at Michigan City state prison. Judge John M Lewis had imposed the term after a Wednesday verdict by a jury finding him guilty of first degree murder in the shotgun slaying of Sandra McFarlin 19 of Seymour at her apartment last June 29. Sheriff Lester E Greathouse and Trooper Robert O Stanley accompanied the move from Brownstown.
The Seymour post office will be closed Tuesday Christmas Day with no city or rural mail delivery or window service. The lobby opens 6 am to 7 pm for lock box mail and outgoing mail drops. Special delivery and perishable mail will be delivered. A 4 pm collection will depart on holiday schedule.
Jackson County commissioners held a special session to approve year end claims enabling county highway and other employees to be paid before Christmas. They appointed 1963 incumbents to county offices, subject to confirmation at the January meetings. Reappointments included Allan H. Nierman as county attorney and Madeline McKain as public health nurse for 1963.
A district report notes several weekend accidents due to slick pavement. Evelyn Mae Houston 44 of Columbus died instantly in an Ind 46 crash 3.5 miles east of Columbus. four others injured including a 15 year old with a fractured collarbone in Crothersville. Police from Seymour Post investigated. Linda Sage 15 suffered a fractured collar bone after a Moore Street crash. Jerry Whitson 21 skidded on ice hitting a pole on Rockford Road. In Freetown Ralph Pearson 18 and Pat Frazier 41 collided on Indiana 58. Frazier arrested for leaving scene and false registration.
Baked ham dominates Christmas Day menus at two Jackson County institutions the county home and Schneck Memorial Hospital while the jail serves baked ham as part of the holiday spread. At the hospital patients will have baked ham baked sweet potatoes green beans spiced apple rings pumpkin custard pie and coffee tea or milk. County home residents will dine on baked ham potatoes au gratin peas tossed salad celery hot rolls fruit cake ice cream and drinks. The jail menu features baked chicken oyster dressing mashed potatoes giblet gravy green lima beans toasted salad hot rolls and butter mince meat pie and a choice of coffee or milk.

The county courthouse employees held a noon Saturday luncheon at Brownstown Lions Hall. County Treasurer Rosa Allman and staff Emma Lou Eaton and Reva Rumph led the event with Claude R. McCrary hosting the ceremonies. Harvey Green gave the invocation and Dallas Spray received a cash gift as he retires December 31, to be succeeded by Omer Quade. McCrary then presented a gift to Sheriff Lester Greathouse who retires after two terms, and to Prosecuting Attorney Earl C. Kline.
Christmas will be a full holiday for most residents and downtown businesses with Tro Tribune not publishing Tuesday. Today's early edition allows employees to enjoy Christmas Eve. Traffic rose as people traveled to spend the holiday with loved ones.
The Seymour Christmas Basket Fund raised 1064.60 dollars beating the previous record. Ninety three contributions helped fund 100 baskets of food and toys for needy families in Seymour alongside a Kiddie Ride fundraiser. Volunteers from the American Legion and Legion auxiliary distributed baskets with help from local businesses and residents.
Seymour residents are urged to attend the Christmas Eve service at Trinity Methodist Church at 11 p m hosted by the Seymour Ministerial Association. Rev A O Jenkins of Seymour First Church of God will deliver Love Transcending.
The $11 million conspiracy trial of Teamsters president James R. Hoffa ended in a hung jury after 17 hours of deliberation over five years of legal battles. Judge William E. Miller ordered an inquiry into alleged jury tampering as transcripts revealed suspicious calls involving Nashville officials and Hoffa associates.
