City residents rush to finish Christmas plans as stores stay open late through Friday and close 5 30 today for Christmas Eve services. State police patrol highways to curb violations with heavy traffic expected. Tribune not published Monday for holiday. Local schools begin Christmas vacation through January 3.
Five Jackson county men had their driver licenses suspended by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for driving while intoxicated. Names include John W. Bruce of 115 South Broadway, Dolphin Ray Lewis of Cortland Route, Willard Napier of Seymour Route, Robert Wilson Seegers of 413 Mill Street, and James H. Warren of 1305 East Tipton Street with suspensions ending November 1956.
Residents of Seymour and surrounding area display colorful outside Christmas lighting. Although no formal contest was held this year, many homes feature outstanding decorations, drawing community interest during the holiday period in 1955.
William F. Preuss 68 a former Immanuel Lutheran School principal and church organist died of a heart attack Friday after entering his parked car on East Second Street. Funeral services set for 1:30 Monday at the Tower.
Shoppers in Seymour enjoyed a Christmas Songfest at the Santa House with a mass choir from ten churches. Nine groups arrived from city outskirts along separate routes and joined under Ronald J. Williams of Shields High School to form one combined choir. Participating churches included First Church of the Nazarene, First Methodist, First Baptist, St Ambrose, Trinity Methodist, First Presbyterian, Bethel A M E, Immanuel Lutheran, Central Christian and Redeemer Lutheran, in a chamber sponsored event.
Two new trustees join Jackson County Schneck Memorial Hospital board for three year terms. James Weaver of Seymour and George Boas of Seymour succeed Roy Chasteen and Martin Bergsicker. Meeting at the county courthouse, the commissioners also finalized 1955 accounts and approved Brownstown Feed Exchange coal contract for next year. A petition to blacktop a two mile county road in Redding township was filed by 20 residents. A side ditch drainage issue near Montgomery Dairy was referred to the highway department for inspection.
The Seymour city council will give third and final readings to two ordinances about sewer work and use rates. Industrial leaders oppose the rate proposal as too high, while engineer Henry B. Steeg defends it before his firm sends a representative to meet Monday. A $6,809.30 election reimbursement bill remains pending, and the council aims to clear all bills before year end as clerk-treasurer Ralph J. Lucas invites firms to file unpaid accounts by Monday’s legal holiday.
Mrs. Gerald Hinderlider, 46, of Medora, was injured Friday when a car backing from a parking space struck her at Brownstown. She sustained a broken knee and was taken to Schneck Memorial Hospital where her condition was described as good this morning.

Christmas menus plan for Schneck Memorial Hospital and Jackson County institutions feature roast turkey and baked ham with sides. Mrs. Effie Bright and Mrs. Lester Greathouse supervise meals for about 30 patients and at least three prisoners, including turkey, oyster dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, and dessert.
Jackson county officials and courthouse staff held a Christmas noon dinner in Brownstown as two outgoing officeholders received gifts. County Commissioner G. Roland Kasting and County Clerk Joe W. Goss were honored as their terms end December and February respectively. Judge John M. Lewis presided with 53 guests in attendance.
A one car crash a pedestrian fatality and a two car collision Friday night caused four traffic deaths as Indiana entered the Christmas weekend. Elk heart men Wayne Gill 23 and Fred Leiniger 33 died at Elkhart General Hospital. Driver Charles Sinton 27 of Elkhart was listed in fair condition.
Emergency evacuations spread across Yuba City Marysville and Stockton as Feather River levees failed and flooded central California. Red Cross opened a Stockton shelter. Eisenhower declared northern California a major disaster area as rain continued for the ninth straight day.
City firemen responded to two minor blazes within an hour. An unattended car seat burned in an alley behind Franklin Junk Yard at 211 South Pine Street with no loss. An oven fire at 705 East Fifth Street started by grease from a roast and stove pilot light caused small damage.
The Eisenhowers plan a family Christmas Eve at the White House with three of John Eisenhower’s children singing carols for their grandparents and four generations gathering for dinner. Barbara Eisenhower has just given birth to Mary Jean at Walter Reed while she will join the family for a brief hospital visit before the celebration.
