A heavy snowfall exceeds two inches by noon and may continue, turning to freezing rain. Roads on U S Highway 50 near Crane Hill were blocked by stalled vehicles. Christmas Eve shopping continued despite the weather as Seymour eyes a quiet holiday.
Schneck Memorial Hospital hosts early Christmas celebrations for patients and staff. More than 200 carolers, including 40 from Central Christian Church, perform under arrangements led by Rev. George L. Florence and directors Mrs. Edmund Murray and Miss Sophia Alexander. Santa, gifts, and trees honor staff with contributions from Howard Smith, Dr H P Graessle, and funeral homes. Local stores promise additional gifts on Christmas Eve.
Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Surface have purchased the home of the late Mrs. Brando Barnes at Walnut and Fourth streets and will take possession around January 15. The Treasure Chest gift shop also included will continue under the same name with restocking after inventory.
The Immanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church in Crothersville presents its annual Christmas program at 7:30 in the new educational building. The Junior Sunday School opens with a program before a play The Christmas Guest staged by older members. Rev. Charles H. Schmitt pastors. Richard Schlueter leads the Sunday School.
Over 500 Sey mour Woolen Mills employees and families attended a Christmas party at the Vondee Theater. William Koerner chaired the program as master of ceremonies after a motion picture. Performers included Cecil King on piano, Dorothy Toenjes, Jackie Tracy with Wilma Stemler, Mrs. Pauline Hill, Dixie Cox, and Jim Riley in a concert of carols and popular tunes. Food baskets, hams, and hens were distributed. Other recreation committee members listed include Louis Pohlman and Albert Luther.
Snow enhances Seymour holiday displays as colorful lights glow from homes and storefronts. Residents plan nighttime drives to view illuminated trees, doorways, and outdoor displays across the city, especially around Gaiser Park and the northwest area.

Jackson county schools begin holidays with most dismissing today and resuming January 3. Clearspring ends Wednesday and returns December 28. Seymour and St Ambrose dismiss Wednesday. Emanuel Lutheran dismisses at noon Thursday for a Christmas Eve program. Brownstown also dismisses this morning.
Jackson County Home receives wide community generosity for Christmas. Brownstown Study Club staged a Santa gift program on December 16 and Brownstown sixth graders performed 음악. Lutheran Church service on December 19 included a guest address by Rev Theo J Herrman. Ladies Aid and Seymour Business and Professional Women’s Club provided gifts and cards throughout the year and for Christmas. Nine women and 12 men are guests. a chicken dinner with trimmings is planned for Christmas Day.
Seymour parking meters brought in $491 this week, $84 above the prior high, as downtown shopping climbs before Christmas and meters fill up with cars. Page 6 column.
James Begley of Indianapolis was scheduled to be arraigned today in city court before Mayor Donald L. Herwig on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence. He was arrested at Ninth and Ewing streets Thursday night after city police received a report from state police that he was en route south on Alternate U. S. Road 31.
Miss Ruby Montgomery completed 25 years of loyal service at the Gold Mine and received a wrist watch from store owner Arthur S. Kaufman at a brief employees meeting this morning. She has earned many friends for her courteous efficient service and pleasant personality. Five years earlier Miss Laura Schulte received a similar 25 year award.
A year of progress in Jackson County Artificial Breeding Association shows 1 211 cows served on 180 member farms since formation May 17 1947. First calves born under the program arrived in March with first artificially sired heifers seen March 16 during a birthday tour of three farms. Growth steady with 62 percent of cattle settled on first service in November, a favorable comparison to natural service.
Bernard P Feeney known as Pat died at his Seymour home after months of illness He was born March 8 1900 in St Genevieve Mo son of the late Thomas and Jessie Feeney He worked as a crane operator for Noblitt Sparks Industries He leaves his widow Agnes a sister Mary Ruddick of Seymour and a brother deceased Funeral services are set for 9 am Monday at St Ambrose Church with Rev Irvin T Mattingly officiating Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery Friends may call at Voss Mortuary after 7 pm Saturday The Rosary will be recited at the mortuary Sunday at 8 pm
The annual courthouse Christmas party is at noon at Lions Hall across from the Brownstown courthouse. A dinner will honor retiring county officials whose terms expire January 1. John M. Lewis will be toastmaster. Jackson Circuit Court closes for a week before the January term opening January 3 with Judge George H. Gossman presiding.
Amid Arab Jewish clashes and severe weather, travel to Bethlehem was curtailed. Sand bags and mine zones blocked Judean roads as 130 Christian Arabs planned a late Christmas Eve pilgrimage to the Church of the Nativity while British troops withdrew after 30 years. Weather swept the region with rain hail cold winds and fog.
Funeral services for Mrs. Orpha Lina Barnett 74 of Ewing will be held Sunday at 1 30 PM at Driftwood Christian Church with Rev R Hall officiating burial will follow in Driftwood cemetery She died Wednesday after a 13 week illness Born October 3 1874 in Washington county she was daughter of Seth and Edith Hattaba Ward She lived near M south of Wallonia most of her life After moving to Ewing she joined Brownstown Methodist Church Her first husband Oliver Jackson died in 1914 Her second husband Homer Barnett survives Also surviving are two sons Clyde Jackson Salem James Jackson Brownstown and a daughter Mrs Lillian Stewart Seymour
William E. Spurgeon, 78, died early Thursday at Grover Martin's home in Freetown after an eight month illness. A Jackson County resident most of life, he worked in a factory and was born April 2, 1870 in Freetown. He married Noah Be McKain in 1897. she preceded him. His second wife Lena Croucher died in 1947. Surviving children include Lester Spurgeon and Mrs. Charles W.
Clyde Perkins, who injured his right hand at the Henley-Filson plant in North Vernon, was released from Schnecke Hospital Thursday night. Three fingers on his right hand were amputated after he was brought in by ambulance. the accident occurred when his hand was in machinery at the plant.
