Seymour merchants expect heavy shopping as final night hours extend to 9 p.m. Tonight most stores stay open later. Friday closes at 5 30. Seymour post office also extends to 6 p.m. today before Friday 5 30 closing for Christmas.
The Indiana Supreme Court ruled this week that free hunting and fishing permits issued to veterans since 1927 are unconstitutional, affecting about a large percentage of roughly 7,000 Jackson County veterans. Licenses will be void 20 days after December 21 unless a rehearing appeal is filed. The Conservation Department will not appeal. veterans groups consider possible further hearings.
After a low of 15 degrees Wednesday night the temperature rose, melting weekend snow. Today’s high tops 50 plus, despite 37 Wednesday. Warmup continues Friday, but Christmas Day turns cooler. Snow chances fade for a white Christmas with flurries possible in the north and unlikely in the south.
A 21 year old Seymour man was sentenced to 1 to 10 years in the Indiana state reformatory after pleading guilty to issuing fraudulent checks in Columbus. Judge George W. Long imposed the sentence in Bartholomew Circuit Court. Emily Hendricks admitted passing several counterfeit checks totaling more than 4000 dollars while posing as a pilot and a lawyer.
Jackson county board of commissioners will hold a 10 am special meeting in the courthouse to finish 1954 business, review year end claims, and consider bids for peace justices in two townships. They may appoint three year terms to the Schneck Memorial Hospital board and then attend a turkey dinner at Brooks Lunch in Brownstown with officials, led by Judge Will presiding and J A Green giving the invocation.
Hundreds of children in Seymour flocked to the Majestic Theater for the American Legion Post 89 Christmas Fund Kiddies Party. Santa handed out treats funded by the drive as Earl Smith donated the theater and volunteers gave time free. Fund totals rose past 8600 with an $8 contribution pushing the total. baskets will be filled by volunteers with bacon canned goods and peanuts.
A truck check at the permanent pit scales on U S Road 31 east of Seymour from 6 a m to 2 p m resulted in ten arrests. Seven drivers were cited for overweight trucks, two for overweight registered weight, and one for a PSC violation. All cited into justice of the peace court.
Official records show maximum temperature on Wednesday and a 2 pm minimum reading. The bs River stood at 0.6 feet.
Shields High School star athlete Bode Hill 17 was suspended from basketball for three games plus probation for the remainder of the season by IHSAA Commissioner L V Phillips after a bench area incident at the Seymour Holidays Tourney involving Scottsburg High School players. Hill will miss Rushville Bedford and North Vernon games. Hoagland suffered a broken jaw and injuries in the melee.
Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown recessed to end the October term which closed Christmas Day. Robert D. Vernon pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated, was fined 50 dollars and costs, and his license was recommended suspended for one year. The January term begins January 3 after holidays, with jurors drawn by Phillip L. Cordes and Willis R. Butt for petit and grand juries.
Seymour Opti mist Club members their wives and families gathered at the Seymour Country Club for a Christmas party Monday night. Walter Grote was master of ceremonies and led a program with Grover Day on accordion Jack Jernigan singing carols Freetown Methodist Church students performed Wedding Rehearsal To Be In Bazooka Nancy Davis played accordion and Santa Claus handed out treats. Miniature trees marked the dinner tables.
A taxicab passenger was injured when the 1954 B-Line taxi collided with a 1953 Stewart’s Appliances truck at East Fourth and Park streets. Mrs. Arthur Hoevner, 43, suffered bruised legs and a forehead and was treated at Schneck Memorial Hospital. The truck driver Edward Robertson, 70, was charged with failure to yield the right of way. Damages were about 500 dollars to the cab and 325 dollars to the truck.
Hart's Sandwich Shop will be closed Saturday December 25 and Sunday December 26. The Ritz Cafe will be closed Coewanee Day and open all day the rest of the time. My office will be closed from December 17 to January 3 for Dr. R. J. Miller, dentist.
Fierce winter storms battered Western Europe for a third day killing or missing at least 26 people and grounding ships from Denmark to northern Italy. Across Britain Germany and Belgium winds reached hurricane force, with damaged buildings and flooding in Oostende while Swiss and Italian roads faced heavy snow.
Seymour residents can view Immanuel Lutheran Church nightly 7 to 9 pm Sunday through Wednesday. Under Ephraim Harlow the church features a White Christmas theme with snow covered pine and blue lights. The church at Walnut and Oak streets invites all, with Rev. Victor A. Mack as pastor.
State police arrested Paul Sehwein and Donald R. Martin in a parked car on U S Alternate Road 81 at 2 a m. The Seymour post charged them with public intoxication and they pled guilty before Mayor Donald L. Herwig, receiving fines of 10 dollars plus 13 dollars in costs.
The U S Court of Appeals, in a 2-1 decision, sustains the 1950 Internal Security Act requiring Communist Party registration. The ruling allows a path to the Supreme Court, with judges saying the act and board order are valid and that the party is substantially directed and controlled by the Soviet Union.
An airliner carrying 28 men including 23 Army veterans crashed into the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh. Eighteen were saved. 10 were missing at dawn. Pilot Harold Poe guided the craft to a shore crash with crews forming human chains to rescue survivors.
Six Buhner Fertilizer Company drivers of Seymour win safe-driving awards for no accidents. Recipients include George Mc Crary Edward Rowe Ray Waldkoetter Harry Ritz John Stockelman and Edgar Allman with four three and two year records covering over 1 000 000 miles of safe operation.
A 1954 model coach driven by Sarah Termoehlen, 22, veered on ice on U.S. Highway 50 five miles west of Seymour, rolling over. Four occupants Alpha Ratliff 42 Thelma Sons 18 and Ann Cockerham 18 were injured and transported for care.
Cleveland shorn of comfort and prestige. A shocked man sits in a county jail cell after being found guilty of second degree murder in the Marilyn Sheppard case. He faces life. Rev Alfred Kreke, pastor of Bay Methodist, says Sheppard is amazed by the verdict and that his extramarital affair with Susan Hayes mattered in the jury’s view. The trial showed Hayes visiting in parked cars and in a suburban apartment, with a California stay noted.
