Seymour crowds fill downtown streets as merchants report strong Christmas sales and late hours. The post office notes about 12 percent more greeting mail and eight percent more parcels than last year, with deliveries on Christmas Day despite the office closing later with page 4 continues.
Edward G. Garriott 63 of Crothersville died this morning at Schneck Memorial Hospital after months of illness. Born October 14, 1887 in Washington County, he lived in Crothersville most of his life, married May Tilford in 1909, and is survived by wife, two children Marshall and Mary Elizabeth, one brother Fred A. Garriott, and two grandchildren Dorothy and Charles. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at Kovener Funeral Home with ministers Hunter and Schmitt. Burial is in Crothersville Cemetery. Friends may call Monday.
The weatherman again withholds consent to protect Christmas plans, letting a warm sun drive temperatures into the 40s and melt a three week stockpile of autumn snow in Seymour. Forecasters still predict more snow on Tuesday.

He died suddenly at his North Vernon home. Survived by widow a daughter Mrs John H Rine of Nashville Tenn a son Kenneth Vance of Indianapolis and four grandchildren.
Authorities search southern Indiana for Truman Scott who escaped from Jackson county jail in Brownstown after sawing bars in a second floor cell. He used an attic access to reach the roof while other inmates remained. Deputy Lester Greathouse found the escape at breakfast.

Ten Jackson county youths will be inducted Friday at a U S Army Air Forces recruiting station. Master Sergeant Huffman said the recruits will receive three day passes after induction and report to Indianapolis after New Year for basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. The group includes Donald Wayne Bloom and Dale Wesley Bowman among others from Freetown and Norman.

A three room home owned by Fred Lucas near the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Acme burned Thursday. A young couple with two small children had just left for relatives when the fire was discovered. Origin unknown but likely started in the attic. nothing was saved.
The Domestic Soft Water Laundry employees and families gathered at Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Anderson home for a holiday party. The Andersons decorated their recreation room with candles and greenery, a tree hosted a gift exchange, and Jim Riley led songs while Judy Ashcraft performed accordion sets. Each guest received a ham from the Anderson Packing Plant.

Robert Tuggle of Seymour was overcome by carbon monoxide Wednesday night while working in a Columbus garage with a concrete finishing machine. He was unconscious for four hours and treated at Bartholomew County Hospital before returning home Friday. Another man in the same crew also inhaled the fumes but to a lesser degree.
Lt. Gen. Walton H. Walker commander of the U S Eighth Army was killed in a head-on jeep truck crash in western Korea. The accident occurred about 11 a m as Walker was en route to the front. Aide Lt Col Layton C Tyner was injured and Walker planned to decorate his son Capt Sam Sims Walker before the trip. Body flown from Seoul to Tokyo for funeral arrangements.
