City leaders outlined new policing plans for Seymour as a new administration takes office at noon January 1. Mayor-elect Donald L. Heiwig and Glen Robert Gill described duties, appearance, discipline, and the push for cleaner streets, improved traffic behavior, and community cooperation.
A public hearing is set tonight at 7:30 in the city building council chamber to consider Noblitt-Sparks Industries petition to vacate a six foot strip along Ross Street from Laurel to Oak alley. Interested residents may attend and speak.
Three people were hurt in two separate mishaps in Seymour and surrounding area this morning. Ted Henkle suffered a probable skull fracture after a tractor rim struck him while inflating a tire near the Sears store area. He was taken to Schneck Memorial Hospital and then moved to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment. In a separate collision on U S Road 31 near the Kriete curve, a 1934 pickup driven by Edward Patterson and a 1935 coach driven by Bessie Snell collided. Patterson’s wife Luna sustained minor facial bruises. Snell had a minor nose cut and bruises. Patterson and Snell were treated and released. Patterson’s vehicle damage was about 150 dollars and the coach about 200 dollars. Officer Jack Curry investigated.
Carl Brown, 39, of the Cortland area, who was sought for shooting a coworker at Seymour Tool and Engineering, surrendered at the Indianapolis FBI office. He was arraigned in Jackson Circuit Court Brownstown, with bond set at 1000, and later pleaded not guilty through his attorney Edward Lustig. Brown admitted firing at Irvin J. Reichenba but said the shot missed, striking a machine, and he fled. The revolver was found in his car in Indianapolis. A second case in circuit court saw Samuel Roller plead guilty to operating a motor vehicle under the influence, fined 50 dollars plus costs.
The Seymour Exchangites held a Christmas meeting at the Seymour Country Club with Rev. Edwin F. Shake delivering the yule-tide talk “Three Wise Men.” President Myrl C. Barkes announced a committee to oversee Christmas donations for about 40 underprivileged local children.
President Truman signed a $914,286,500 appropriations bill including $522,000,000 in emergency aid for France Italy and Austria. The record notes Seymour Business College lists mid winter term with January 5 to 12 openings and approval for G I training.
Carl Alexander of North Vernon elected illustrious master of Seymour Council No. 38 Royal and Select Masters at the annual election in the Masonic Temple. Charles Jenkins deputy master and George F. Cooper principal conductor of work named. W. A. Loyd treasurer, E. C. Lory re elected recorder, with officers installed by E. W. Sargent and former master Ernest E. Truex serving as marshal.

The Truman Hotel lease is transferred to Harry Boling of 438 Kessler Boulevard, announced by owner Jesse T. Combs. The change becomes effective January 1 and includes plans for remodeling and redecoration after Boling takes over. Combs recently leased the Lynn Hotel and will focus on its remodel.
Funeral services are planned Wednesday morning in Burgettstown Pennsylvania for Mollie Martin 98 mother of Dr Sumner L Martin superintendent of the Indianapolis district of Methodist Churches who once lived in Seymour while he led the Seymour district Burial will be in Cadiz Ohio She died Sunday at a daughter’s home Mrs Harry Ferguson She was born December 8 1849 and spent most of her life in Harrison County Ohio She was active in Hopeville Methodist Church taught Sunday School over 25 years and remained active until recently Surviving are five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The Daily Tribune announces its Holiday Greeting Edition will be distributed Wednesday and will skip Christmas Day. Plans have progressed for weeks with special copyrighted art and original advertisements conveying Christmas wishes. The 32 page edition marks the yearly moment when business and professionals share thanks with customers and patrons.
The Sey mour Chapter of the Valparaiso Guild presents its Christmas musicale Sunday night December 28 at 7 30 in Immanuel Lutheran Church. Featured are instrumental numbers by Elizabeth and Marie Strassen of Milwaukee, formerly the Strassen Trio, with local talent under Olga Barth. Public invited.

About 200 people attended the Thompson Dairy Company annual Christmas dinner at the First Methodist Church. Attendees came from Seymour Bedford Columbus Madison North Vernon Mitchell Brownstown and Scottsburg. J R Thompson chaired with Rev George L Florence giving the invocation. A turkey dinner followed with Christmas bonuses and insurance for each employee. Foster Hall quartet from Indianapolis performed and Tom Collins of City National Bank of Kansas City spoke on Social Progress. The event featured a notable prize winner.
Rep Engel of Michigan urged the United States to consider a canal site outside Panama if Panama rejects U S base rights. He would halt funding for current site development and push surveys for alternatives in Central America while awaiting Panama’s election outcome and any new moves by Panama.
Washington reports star coloratura Margaret Truman, 23, closed a coast to coast tour at Constitution Hall before 4,000 with her Father, the President, in attendance. Paul Hume of the Washington Post criticized her teacher for her technique.

The forecast for today and Wednesday offers little chance of snow for the area with cooler temperatures. Jackson county might see a gray frost during the holidays as clouds linger and the temperature dips. The low Monday reached 31 degrees and the high 40. White River at Rockford eased to two feet after several days above that mark.
