The post office will deliver Christmas mail through Monday with extended stamp windows and full service. Churches schedule holiday programs while shoppers seek last minute gifts. Schools close for vacation and most businesses observe Christmas Day with staff shutdowns.
Shields High School Owls kept their unblemished record in the South Central Conference by beating Washington High 29 to 20. The win extends their first-place lead with one loss in eight games this season. Page two carries the full story.
Shields High School students filled fifty baskets of food this morning under city attendance officer Mrs. Annette K Test with help from the Girls Reserve and Hi-Y groups. Each student brought a potato, and the drive gathered Irish potatoes sweet potatoes cheese flour macaroni candy and apples plus beans. Local merchants donated supplies and two service stations provided gasoline for deliveries to families of high school and grade students.
Jackson county board of commissioners met at the courthouse in Brownstown for the final 1939 session. They planned to close the year's business and approve all claims. The meeting marked the last for Ezra Scott of Owen township whose term ends December 31.
A three hour Christmas program at the Seymour Recreation Center Thursday night drew about 200 attendees. A sixty member cast performed a Haensel and Gretel play with Santa Claus distributing treats, followed by a room parade and a Christmas dance with ice cream and cookies as refreshments.
A car stolen in Brownstown Friday night was found this morning in Bedford and owned by Elmer Smith of Tampico, who works at the county REMO office by night. Sheriff Von Dielingen was told at 12:45 this morning. A second car stolen in Bedford, belonging to A Voris, was recovered in Brownstown near the main street sewer head after an observed exit by a man around 10 o'clock Friday night.
Dr and Mrs Glenn Sutton of Athens Georgia arrived to spend the holidays with Mr and Mrs Wallace Sutton on West Second Street.
The Federal Social Security Board will start old age insurance changes next month affecting 178 000 beneficiaries who previously took lump sum settlements. Congress widened eligibility last summer allowing return to monthly benefits, with lump sums deducted from future checks. Most settlements averaged 75 to 80 dollars, and a $25 monthly benefit would start after a three month deduction.
The Rural Electrification Administration announced $663,000 in allotments for six projects across five states. Jackson County REMC in Brownstown Indiana was awarded $100,000 to build 118 miles of line serving 352 members in Brown, Scott, Jennings and Lawrence counties.

Mrs. Vada Kriete receives a Christmas radio gram from her son Edward Burrell stationed in Tsingtao China. The message relayed via W9QG Indianapolis conveys season greetings and a “Honey New Year.” It is the second such message in a month after an earlier note forwarded from Beverly Hills California.
The Daily Tribune’s pre Christmas edition reports no wars or air raid alarms for the United States. Instead church bells ring and citizens hear the message of peace on earth good will toward men.
Seymour police investigate two pre holiday break ins Friday night or early today at the Graessle Mercer Company on Pine and St. Louis and at Domestic Laundry on West Second. No valuables were taken though offices were damaged with safes and locks disturbed.
Shields High School held a Christmas convocation directed by Miss Mina McHenry. Waldron Berry read, with poetry, readings, and choral selections by a purple robed high school choir. Martha Keith as the Madonna, Alvin Terkhorn Joseph, and James Laupus, Leroy Hodapp, Jack Ahlbrand as wise men. Yuletide greetings were extended and students were invited to the Washington Seymour basketball game as a gift.
Ivan R. Love of Seymour named ninth district census supervisor with William Lieber of Jeffersonville as assistant. Seymour to be district headquarters as census work begins January 2 1940 with about 150000 workers. Nationwide surveys will cover business manufacturing housing and farming across numerous companies and locations.
