Heavy traffic gridlock hit area highways as schools closed for Christmas and year end vacations. Shoppers flock to downtown Seymour with stores open until 9 PM to complete gifts while families plan holiday observances and church services through the weekend ending Monday night.
Seymour citizens have contributed 623.91 to the 43rd annual Christmas Basket Fund, with 155.25 donated today. Three large gifts include 66.95 from Paris Style Kiddie Ride, 25 from Grassle Mercer Co employees, and 15 from Suburban Home Demonstration Club.
The Seymour post office will close for two days Sunday and Monday with no city or rural deliveries or window service. Lobby hours 6 am to 7 pm allow lock box mail and outgoing mail drops. Special delivery and perishables move. collection from city boxes at 4 pm.
A capacity audience enjoyed the Yale Concert Series presentation The Sounds of Christmas at Seymour Senior High School auditorium. Under Earl D. Prout direction the Owl Tones Choralaires Freshettes delivered a religious yet festive program with lighting and staging enhancing selections like Gloria I Heard the Bells and Silent Night featuring solos and ensemble numbers by students and a golden angel on display.

A family of five escaped unharmed when a single story home near Hayden burned to the ground late Thursday. Firefighters from North Vernon Rural and Spencer Township fought the 90 minute blaze but could not save the structure. John Ruth and his wife and their three children were awakened by flames in a back room and evacuated. Ruth flagged a motorist to call help after lines went dead. The family lost most possessions.

In West Palm Beach Joseph P. Kennedy, 73, remains seriously ill with a brain blood clot and partial paralysis. Doctors report slight improvement and Kennedy plans to return to his father's bedside from Bermuda, as family vigil continues at St. Mary's Hospital.
