Recounting of ballots for Jackson County clerk and sheriff was paused for Christmas. The recount will resume Tuesday December 26 at 8 am with 16 precincts left. Republicans gained votes in the last counted precinct. Abel leads sheriff race by 55, Goss leads clerk by 10.

Jack Lynn Jarrett seven-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Jonas Jarrett Seymour R1 sustained a cut above the right eye and bruises after a westbound taxi struck him on Tipton Street about 100 feet east of Vine Street. Police said he ran from between two parked cars and crossed south while the cab driven by Robert Eugene Terry tried to brake but could not stop. The boy was taken to Schneck Memorial Hospital and released after examination.

Burn Victim Dies in Azalia Fuel Drum Explosion
George Wallace Jones aged 39 died from burns sustained when a fuel oil drum exploded at his Azalia home last November 10. Neighbor Walter J. Simpson died the following day from related injuries.

U S Route 31 South Bridge Closed After Tests
U S Route 31 southeast of Seymour remains closed today while concrete floor tests on the Mutton Creek overflow bridge are evaluated. The new bridge, built under an emergency contract after the old structure was damaged by a large truck on September 23, will reopen once the floor gains sufficient strength.

Eugene Vance Dies Former North Vernon Police Chief
Eugene K. Vance about 55 died suddenly of a heart attack at his North Vernon home. A former Indiana state police officer and longtime Seymour post commander, he led North Vernon police for three years after leaving the state force. He earlier served as barber in Vernon and is survived by his widow, a son, and a daughter. Funeral plans not yet announced.

Legion Christmas Party Delights Children at Majestic Theater
The Majestic Theater hosted a Community Christmas Party for hundreds of children with the American Legion and Boy Scouts on hand to guide guests.
