The region records nine below zero as winter officially begins at 9 02 a m CDT Sunday. Temperatures may dip to zero to 10 below tonight while highs struggle above freezing. snow and ice persist in Jackson County and Seymour streets remain hazardous.
Seymour Community Schools and Jackson County districts dismiss Friday after final day of classes and will resume January 6 1964. Special Christmas programs mark the break and teachers gain two extra vacation days due to New Year’s Day landing midweek.
Up to 300 Jackson County veterans may receive about 18000 in GI Insurance dividend payments for 1964 with checks starting January 2 and finishing by January 25 for Indiana veterans total. Dividends equal 6 per 1000 dollars on 10000 policy. statewide 111905 veterans to get payments totaling 5574300. Veteran pensions based on need, with 90 days service in World War I II or Korea and 10 percent disability qualify. burial benefits also noted.
The Rev. H. H. Kespohl, Emanuel Lutheran Church Dudleytown, will leave January 12 for farewell and be installed at Zion Lutheran Garrett January 19. He began in Dudleytown in 1956 after prior service in Conroy Iowa and others. The move follows a new church building program in Garrett.
The Seymour Ministerial Association announces a Christmas Eve worship service at Calvary Baptist Church on Ewing Street. The 11 p.m. service is hosted by Rev. Delmar G. Morris with a large citywide congregation invited to attend.
The Rev. J. T. Moore of Central Christian Church will deliver the annual Christmas sermon titled Good News. The Yale service will include special music and congregants will sing several Christmas hymns as Seymour residents gather, traditionally drawing large crowds before midnight.
October term of Jackson Circuit Court ends today after session since October. The court will vacation two weeks until January 6 with Judge John M. Lewis at the courthouse one hour each morning for arraignments. Jury list draws will be made December 30 for January term through February's last Saturday. Trials include state vs. Ahlersmeyer for reckless homicide January 31, Harris for involuntary manslaughter January 3, Cockerham for burglary February 7, and Floyd Abel for assault February 10. Civil matters include Botkins vs. City of Seymour and Interstate Construction vs. James Gardner foreclosing trust indenture with verdicts. Sherry Sullivan vs. Everett D. Sullivan granted divorce, custody, and support.
A Friday afternoon crash on Ind 46 four miles south of Nashville killed Fort Fleetwood, 55 Bloomington R2, and seriously injured his nephew Dale Fleetwood, 40 Nashville R1, and William Lietz, 39 Nashville R4. A second crash near Whiteland sent Ronald Larry Cox in critical condition to hospital. Another single vehicle overturned in Seymour injuring driver Jerry Isaacs, 19 Cortland, as he was treated at Schneck Memorial Hospital.
Harold Murphy, 19, son of Mrs. Berna Murphy of Seymour R2, was kicked in the lower lip by a cow at 6 pm Friday and released after treatment at 6:30 pm. Another man, Clarence Allman of Cortland, R1, drove home ill Friday night and was treated and released at the hospital.

Thomas A. Plunkett, chair of the 45th annual Christmas Basket Fund, urged Seymour residents to donate more as requests from needy families exceed expectations. The fund, backed by the Seymour American Legion Post 89 and the Seymour Daily Tribune, has reached $607.25 from nine donations, still far from the $700 minimum and well short of the 1962 record of $1,064.60. Donations can be sent to LeRoy Pollett at Seymour National Bank or the Tribune office.
The Associated Press reports six deaths from Friday crashes push Indiana 1963 traffic fatalities to a postwar high of 1,282, surpassing 1952. Victims include Marquis Burris of Wapella Illinois and Justine Bales of Lima Ohio, with several others injured in crashes on U S 36 and U S 30. Police cite wrong-lane driving and passing trucks as factors.
City receipts from Indiana State Alcoholic Beverage Commission rose this year with a total distribution of 21 108 74 exceeding 1962 by 1 050 43. January April June July October and December distributions totaled 3 550 94 2 923 03 2 730 02 3 842 77 3 678 28 and 4 383 70 respectively.
S/Sgt. Edward L. Guerrero, just home for Christmas with wife Patty and two daughters, recalls 13 months in South Viet Nam with 32 missions in air rescue and medical evac. He describes near misses, the Diem overthrow, Diem’s palace siege, and noting no U.S. troops in the coup. He received the Expeditionary Medal and will report to Andrews AFB on January 6.
