The Christmas Basket Fund topped 700 with a surge of 188 from 15 contributors. An Arvin Industries employee donated 105, aiding the drive led by LeRoy Pollert, fund treasurer, at the Seymour National Bank office.
Local students will return after an 11 day vacation from studies, ending an 11 day break before resuming classes on Wednesday.
Snow fell across Seymour and Jackson County with light accumulations and slick spots on I 65 US 50 US 31 and nearby state roads. Forecasters expected an inch in northern areas with mild temperatures overall and a chance of a white Christmas before a cold end to the five day outlook.
Three Columbus residents were among five injured when a car struck a stopped freight train at a Fourth Street Road crossing on the city’s east edge early Sunday. May Belle Sutherland and Bobby Sue Brown were listed as fair, with Zay Hill also in fair condition, while two other passengers sustained injuries. The collision occurred at about 35 mph and investigators noted brakes may not have been applied. Additional weekend crashes in Jackson County were also reported by Seymour state police post.
Seymour firefighters answered two calls over the weekend. A Sunday alarm at 12 55 p m was from the Charles Beatty residence 318 Lee Boulevard. At 10 p m Saturday they were summoned to the Travis Carter home 516 North Elm Street for a trash fire.
Three members of Seymour's Company A 2nd Battalion Mechanized 152nd Infantry 38th Division will join 200 Indiana National Guard members leaving Jan 2 for two weeks of jungle warfare and survival training in the Canal Zone Captain Rex E Plummer Brownstown will train a week and survive on land meat Sgt Gaiter and another member will complete jungle warfare qualifications Local guardsmen are part of a Selective Reserve buildup ordered by Secretary of Defense Robert S McNamara.

Former Indiana Gov. Am E Welsh is appointed by President Johnson to a 27000 a year post on the United States Donation Joint Commission. The Vincennes native and Indianapolis lawyer will remain in Indiana and continue his legal practice. Previous service includes four years as governor and terms in the General Assembly.
Cape Kennedy reports Frank Borman and James Lovell begin three days of medical examinations to assess spaceflight effects after their 14 day 10 moon trip. They cited confinement as the main complaint and Lovell’s frequent dreaming during the mission.
A 29 year old Marion County man pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence in Jackson Circuit Court. Judge Jonathan J. Robertson fined Jerry Michael Easter of Beech Grove $50 and costs and suspended his Indiana operator license for six months. Trooper Ronnie Miller of the Seymour post arrested Easter early today one mile north of the U S 530 junction on Interstate 65.
Seymour Jaycees and Indiana Mental Health Association leaders joined Jackson County groups and five Seymour High School girls to host Christmas parties in Muscatatuck wards 14A and 14B. The effort, sponsored for years, included multiple local representatives and community volunteers.
