India announced complete success in the blitz into Goa Damao and Diu, with Goa's capital Nova Goa raised the flag early Monday. Casualties were reported light on both sides as Portuguese resistance collapsed and thousands surrendered.
Jackson Circuit Court ruled in favor of the City of Seymour on a supplemental complaint to a remonstrance petition against annexation. The city’s motion found the remonstrators failed to prove their case and the ordinance under dispute was repealed, moot, and the remonstrators take nothing with the appeal dismissed without prejudice to the city.
Jackson County grand jury returned amended indictments against three men for first degree murder in two connected cases. Jack Cockrum of Brownstown and Edward Jones of Chattanooga face charges in the Rice slaying, while Robert Allen Jones and Edward Jones are tied to the Shibe murder. Cockrum remains jailed without bond awaiting arraignment. the Jones brothers are held in Chattanooga.
Federal indictment issued in Indianapolis charges 32 year old Willard Hardaway of Louisville with interstate transportation of stolen goods. He was arrested November 24 in Seymour while attempting to cash a $100 postal money order in Brown’s Grocery. He used the alias Everett James Peak and had cashed another $100 order earlier at Eckelman’s Shoe Store.
Seymour and Jackson County students begin the long Christmas break with public and parochial schools planning twelve days away from classes. Public schools resume January 3, 1962, while Cortland and Freetown follow a similar schedule ending January 2.
Seymour High School Music Department presents Yale Concert Thursday night in the high school auditorium. Directed by Earl D Prout the choral department performs Christmas selections at 8 p m Tickets are sold by choir and band members or at the door Thursday.
The Majestic Theater and Seymour American Legion sponsor the 43rd Christmas Basket Fund Kiddie Show at 10 am Saturday with Earl Smith and Charles W Hawn credited for support. Santa will entertain and distribute treats as fund totals rise to 319.16 with new donations.
Thomas L. Mikel, 42, of Seymour, appeared in Jackson Circuit Court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated third offense. He pleaded not guilty. Judge John M. Lewis set bond at $1000 and ordered an attorney within seven days. Mikel was arrested by Seymour police chief Charles W. Freeman after a Monday collision at Tipton Street and Jeffersonville Avenue involving a 1961 four door. Both cars sustained $40 in damage. the other driver was Malcolm E. Jones, 51, of North Vernon.
An overflow crowd at Seymour American Legion Post 89 heard three Democrats campaign for the 1962 senatorial nomination. Birch Bayh, Charles H. Boswell, and M. Jack Edwards presented divergent platforms backing Kennedy administration policies and urging support for Welsh. The event highlighted party unity ahead of the state convention.

At the United Nations the Soviet veto blocked a Western resolution calling for the withdrawal of Indian troops from Goa and two other Portuguese territories. The Asia Africa bloc joined in seeking Portugal's handover, but a 7-4 vote failed as the Soviet Union, Ceylon, Siberia, and the United Arab Republic opposed. Adlai Stevenson condemned the veto as a crisis for the UN, warning of possible death of the organization and noting attempts to rewrite the charter to permit force.

Snow blanketed northern Indiana with nearly an inch recorded before daybreak. Officials forecast rain changing to light snow across the southern two thirds of the state this afternoon or tonight with three to four inches expected in the northwest and one to two inches in the northeast. Temperatures will plunge, with five above in the northwest and 30 in the southeast, easing to no warmer than 23 Wednesday as winter arrives. Rockford’s White River at four feet was rising this morning.
Robert L. Bennett probation officer will address Seymour CD police corps at city hall at 7 30 p m. He will discuss duties and disaster response. Captain Donald G. Blair urges applicants to attend. more volunteers are needed and application blanks will be available. Applicants must be 25.
