Recount at Brownstown courthouse shows George W. Abel of Seymour leading county sheriff race by 20 votes over Democrat George O. Patrick. Joe W. Goss, Republican for county clerk, gains 46 votes but trails Democrat H. Jack Spurgeon by 64 in official tallies.
North Vernon volunteers were called out in sub freezing temps to battle a flare up of Monday morning's $100000 blaze in the First National Bank Building. Leslie Helm, bank director and co owner of Helm Matthews Rexall Drug Store gutted in the fire, said the drug store floor rekindled Monday night as the front wall and roof remained collapsed.
Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekah Districts hosted a Sunday program at the 1.0.0.F home in Greensburg. Local turnout joined in the holiday event with District Deputy Ralph Metz and Mrs. Paul Wilson on the committee. Irene Kirby Hammond of Columbus served as mistress of ceremonies.
Stewart Hall, three year old son of Mrs. William Davis and Mr. Davis of 320 East Laurel Street, was admitted to Schneck Memorial Hospital with third degree burns on the right side after an accidental scalding from a bucket of water at home. His face was not burned.
All Seymour public school students will be dismissed Wednesday afternoon for a two week holiday. Classes resume Tuesday, January 2. Shields High School holds a 10:15 a.m. Christmas convocation and Shields Junior High adds a 2:30 p.m. Christmas program. The high school band, concert choir and junior high choir perform, opening with Yuletide Echoes and Ave Maria.
Francis Wible was found guilty by Judge George H. Gossman in Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown on a charge of drawing a deadly weapon. He was fined $100 and costs and sentenced to six months at the state penal farm without suspension. The charge was filed by his mother.
Prompt police action recovered a Seymour car stolen this morning and led to the arrest of Ronald Boomershine of Sparta Michigan within 30 minutes. Columbus police detained him while state police pursued. he will be taken to the county jail.
More than 60 Seymour boys were guests of Rotary members at the Elks Club for a Christmas party featuring Mogul the Magician from Huntingburg. After a dinner and carols, boys received gifts from under a decorated tree and were invited to tonight’s high school basketball game.
The Seymour common council approved Ordinance 1148 amending the smoke-control ordinance 1145, offering a six month compliance grace and extending controls to railroad locomotives. Ordinance 1149 was given first reading establishing several one way streets as part of traffic regulation.
A 1940s panel truck collided with a northbound 1946 coach on Chestnut street causing about 175 dollars in combined damage. Kenneth Bowman’s car sustained 150 dollars in damage. George M. Watson’s vehicle 25 dollars. Bowman’s driver was cited for no license. A second crash on Broadway involved Frank William King after he swerved to avoid an unidentified car, hitting a utility pole with about 100 dollars damage.
John A. Williams of Seymour serves aboard the light cruiser USS Worcester, a Pacific Fleet unit. The ship features rapid fire six inch guns and multiple anti aircraft weapons, completed after the war and incorporating the latest cruiser design.

The Moore family from near Medora, six children and a widow, will be remembered at Christmas through the Legion-Tribune Good Cheer Fund after their father was killed Saturday when his truck was struck by a B and O train. Harry M. Palmer of the Seymour Chamber of Commerce rode on the train and urged community help, contributing $5 to support the family, with funds to be used for their Christmas relief.

John F. Elsner 88 of Four Corners died this morning at his daughter’s Cincinnati home. He was a St. Joseph's Catholic Church member. He married Frances Weitzel in 1890 at Four Corners. she died in 1948. Survivors include six children: August Elsner Henry Elsner Mrs William Haag Mrs Maetzick Frank Elsner and John E. Elsner. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
The text reports a continuing cold snap with Indianapolis forecasters predicting light snow through tonight. Temperatures dropped to four degrees the night before, the lowest since November, with daytime highs around 26 degrees and icy patches lingering after a heavy snow.
The Hooper home at 419 West Third hosted Hoop's Cleaners staff on Sunday night with holly decorations, a lit Christmas tree, games, and a musical program by Junior Pollard. Santa Claus handed out gifts as Eddie Stockelman and Mrs. Myrtle Conway received favors. refreshments followed. President Truman refused to dismiss Secretary of State Dean Acheson amid Republican demands. He announced more U S troops would go to Europe to join Eisenhower, and that General Motors prices would be set by the Economic Stabilization Administration.
The Air Force will call five air national guard groups and supporting units into federal service on February 1. Details on the units or bases are withheld for security reasons. Five guard groups have already been brought into service since October amid Defense Department moves to mobilize ground divisions.
Three Shields Junior High School students Patty Aiken Gene Morrison and Don Curtis Schmidt eighth graders had their essays accepted for a National Essay Association prose anthology to be titled Young America Speaks. Essays on Peace and My Ambition were under 200 words and selected from national junior high submissions.
Funeral services for Flor ence Elkins 75 a Jackson county native were held at Barkes and Fox Funeral Home Columbus with burial Garland Brook Cemetery. She died Sunday at her home 106 Washington St Columbus after 12 years illness. Survivors include son Earl Elkins Columbus daughter Mrs James Rice Columbus brother Frank N Newcomb Columbus sister Mrs Blanche Deprend Indianapolis six grandchildren five great grandchildren and son Harold Elkins who died a week ago.
Mrs. John Nierman clerk of the Jackson county selective service board told Jackson county registrants they could relax through the holiday. Her office at Brownstown will be closed from Wednesday until a week from today the day after Christmas.
President Truman formally appoints General Dwight D. Eisenhower as supreme commander of an integrated European defense force. The decision follows requests from North Atlantic powers for an American to hold the top post and reflects Ike’s prior leadership of allied forces to victory in World War II.
Ivory C. Tolle, 72, of Lebanon, longtime grand lecturer of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Indiana, died at his home after weeks of illness. A 33rd degree Mason, he served 28 years in the lodge and was known across Seymour and Jackson County for annual lodge inspections. Former funeral director and Lebanon church member, he recently held a full-time lodge post.
The 12 Atlantic pact nations announced that Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower will organize an international army in 1951 to defend Europe. They approved his supreme commander role and the integration of German participation under a centralized command. A Defense Production Board will speed up arms manufacture.
