Defense saving campaign emphasizes broad participation to curb inflation and fund war efforts. Local leaders explain Series F G bonds and defense stamps, with options for weekly payroll withholding, bank purchases, and school drives. Campaign begins January 1 with extensive citizen involvement and post office stamp sales.
Funeral services for Frank P. Colemeyer city fire chief for twelve years are planned for 9 AM Saturday at St Ambrose Catholic Church with Rev W Burkart presiding. Burial will follow at Scottsburg Cemetery. He died Wednesday night at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis after nine weeks of illness.
Three new cases were filed in Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown now in session. Virginia Peacock seeks a divorce from Victor Peacock. they married March 4, 1939, separated November 1, 1939, with Mark Hays as attorney. Ralph Steinkamp, from Seymour justice of the peace, faces reckless driving charges. Meedy S. Blish of Brownstown is charged with second offense drunk driving. Virgil Jackson’s state case, a statutory offense, was reset to January 2. Oliver Irene Overshiner was granted a divorce from Ralph Overshiner with custody of three minor children awarded to the defendant.
Miss Amelia T. Wichman aged seventy four died at her Columbus RS home after a three week illness with complications. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 1 30 from the home and 2 from White Creek Methodist Church, Rev L D Youngblood officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Tower Funeral Home after 7 tonight and at the Columbus RS home after 8 Sunday morning. She was born October 22 1867 at White Creek, daughter of Fred and Bar...
Members of the Seymour Lions Club staged a Christmas Seals campaign program with song and talks. The group featured Francis Murray who originated and wrote the show. The club will skip holidays and meet again January 8.
A blaze at Hanover College in Madison Indiana damaged the original 1840 building housing the chapel classrooms and art gallery. The interior was destroyed and losses were pegged at 100000 by trustee M F Garber including a 7000 organ donated by Charles J Lynn and a valuable paintings collection. Classes may resume after Christmas vacation to limit interruptions.
Noblitt-Sparks Industries Inc reports curtailment of auto parts output and seeks offset by defense orders. Indianapolis labor leaders say over 20 000 Hoosier auto plant workers will be unemployed this year due to a 75 percent government cut, with 5 000 South Bend Studebaker layoffs to be rehired after inventories. Frank Hoke says plants will convert to defense production but retooling may take time. The bulletin notes reduced passenger car production and uncertain future for automobile parts.
Campaign planning progresses for a Red Cross war relief fund drive with Glenn Keachy named general chairman. Committee member names will be announced Saturday. The Seymour and Jackson township goal is $3000 and the county total is $7000.
The Public Service Company of Indiana filed with the Indiana Public Service Commission to abandon and salvage the Seymour to Indianapolis interurban line. Inoperative since last September after a wreck disabled the lone passenger car, it has not carried passengers recently. The petition seeks cancellation of a 99 year lease on the right of way.
A large life size Nativity scene spans the second floor show window of Droege furniture in downtown. Special lighting adds life like effect. Rev. Benjamin Schumacher of Medora, a Lutheran missionary in western Jackson County, prepared the display.

Seymour board of public works and safety meets at 4 PM to open bids for the Southside Interceptor sewer project and for selling a 38000 bond issue to finance construction. Bids for sewer work due by 4 PM. bond bids due by 2 PM at the city hall. The Municipal Bonds of 1941 will bear interest not over four percent per year.
Michael A. Locke, 74, owner of the Columbus Daily Herald, died today of heart disease in Columbus, Indiana. Born near Peru, he moved to Columbus in 1892, formed a partnership with A. J. Diplone to buy the Herald, then became its sole owner.

Tokyo reports Japanese troops in a heavy night assault captured part of Hongkong Island while Sir Mark Young reportedly escaped to an unknown destination. Heavy fighting and a serious situation were reported as a small British garrison defended the 100 year old colony amid global plans for a Washington conference on an axis offensive.
Miss Margaret EF Dismore, eighty three, longtime Crothersville resident, died at 4 this morning after an eight year illness. Funeral held at Crothersville Presbyterian Church with Rev L V Rule. burial in Crothersville Cemetery. Born May 17 1858 in Scott county, she was daughter of John W and Bridget Dismore and lived most of her life near Crothersville. Survived by sister Miss Mary E Dismore, niece Mrs Helen Braun of Louisville, and nephew Raymond Garriott of Crothersville.
