More than 100 attended the Fifth Annual Jackson County 300 Bushel Corn Club banquet at St. Peter's Lutheran Church Brownstown. Melvin and Donald Peters won Senior and Junior corn titles, the first county pair to hold both.
Seymour Police Chief Donald M. Winn warns that December days get shorter until the 21st, increasing after-dark driving risks. He notes darkness and icy roads raise fatal crash chances, urges sturdy wipers, de frosting gear, and timely winter upgrades for family safety.
Jackson County reports 1.06 inches of rain since Tuesday and the White River east fork rises to six feet. Widespread rainfall near two inches threatens lowland flooding while highways stay clear. Temperatures swing 65 down to 37 with a cool 57 by afternoon.

Seymour American Legion Post No 89 invites members and friends to its annual Christmas dinner and musical review in the Legion banquet hall this Saturday at 7 p m Tickets are available at the Legion Home or from Robert Lucas at Seymour National Bank.
Seymour Library’s officers for the coming year were elected Tuesday night. Hobbs Miller is president Harvard Nolt ing is vice president and Tom Voss is treasurer. Mrs. Paul Cooper was re elected secretary. Other members include Mildred David Tom Mc Ginley and Mrs. Lynn Faulkeoner. Applications remain for head librarian. The library has hired Edward D James of Indianapolis to conduct a public survey for the library. Circulation this month reached 6410. The library closes at noon on December 24 and 31.
Seymour American Legion's annual drive reached $320.11 led by treasurer Robert H. Lucas, with three days left before closing on Saturday. Donations support gifts and food for needy families. recipients are screened and toys are refurbished by the Seymour Boys' Club for a Dec 24 Majestic Theatre Kiddie Show hosted by Santa Claus.
AEC head Ludwig Strauss said hydrogen fusion power remains remote and will not yet replace fission reactors. He rejected British reports of near success and noted no interference with developing electrical power from heavy element fission.
A three man panel in Jackson Circuit Court set a value of 1800 dollars per acre for four acres for Shields High School construction. Appraisers J B Richart Henry Krumme Jr and Glen M Keach filed the report. In a separate action Judge John M Lewis revoked a suspended sentence for 15 year old Norma Sue Ferry of Seymour. She may be transferred to the Indiana Girls School at Claremont and held until age 20 or until release. She was linked to driving a car without the owner's consent. The stolen car belonging to Roy Rudolph was recovered by Seymour police. Ferry and 16 year old David Carr were in the car.
A lady's white gold wrist watch was found on West Second Street in the 400 block. The finder, Marilyn Knott, asks the owner to call 1A2-1080 or visit 405 Bush Street to identify and claim the watch.
The Air Force Atlas missile flew over 600 miles out over the Atlantic on its first long distance test reaching over 80 miles altitude. Officials said the test was longer and higher than planned and the weapon was not recovered. The two prior tests had failed after takeoff.
State police investigated a robbery at the Sherman Jones residence located about .2 miles west of Jonesville. Entry was gained by prying boards from a window between 6 am and 2 pm Monday. A brown suit, a wrist watch, and several cans of fruit were reported stolen. Detective Don Winn led the Seymour post investigation.
At the NATO summit in Paris, 15 allied nations agreed to base U.S.-made nuclear missiles in Europe, with final approval pending from heads of government. Britain, the Netherlands, and Turkey are among nations open to hosting missiles, while Denmark and Norway shifted to support the principle amid East-West disarmament talks.
In Alabama an amendment to abolish Macon County passes amid fears the new federal voting rights law would enable Black political control. Macon whites outnumber Black residents about 7 to 1. the plan would merge the county into neighboring majority white counties. Tuskegee, home to Tuskegee Institute, anchors local tensions and civic actions.
