Thief stole a Brownstown Farm Bureau safe containing checks cash and records worth $565.06 while a 1948 Farm Bureau pickup was used to haul it away. The safe suffered damage and the knob fireproofing showed evidence of forced entry as investigators review the break in at the Jackson County Farm Bureau office.
Purdue extension forester E. J. Lott notes locally grown Christmas trees meet key traits: dark green color, compact form, conical shape, and freshness. Indiana pine varieties dominate Hoosier markets with Scotch, red, white, jack, and Virginia pines. For freshness, place the tree in wet sand or water and trim the base before bringing it indoors.
Christmas will be the theme of a program at the Seymour Rotary Club weekly dinner meeting Monday at 6 15 PM. Dr A A Cohn is chairman and will welcome two or three First Baptist Church children to present the Scriptural story from Matthew and Luke. The program inspires members during the Christmas season.
Sey mour post office extends hours from today through December 23 with windows open to 6 p m including stamp parcel post and registry. Sunday afternoon mail collection around 3 p m and parcel deliveries to residential areas aim to free space for new parcels. Cancellations lag behind last year but greetings mail steadily rises to near normal for season.
Annual meeting of the Jackson County Actual Past Masters Club will be held Tuesday night in the lodge room of Jackson Lodge No. 146 Free and Accepted Masons at 7 o'clock. Supper precedes at 6 in the Masonic Temple dining room. The Past Master degree is expected for newly elected ward shipful masters. Attendees include Past Masters from Washington Lodge No. 13 Brownstown Jackson Lodge Clearspring Kurtz and Medora and Crothersville lodges. J Robert Klein of Seymour is president.
The National Safety Council issued a report with safe speed guidance for ice and snow. On ice the safe limits are 25 mph with reinforced chains or 15 mph with winter tires, and on packed snow 35 mph with chains or 28 mph with winter tires, though conditions can still make any speed hazardous.
The Seymour Ministerial Association announces a Christmas Eve worship service at 11 pm Friday at Central Christian Church. Rev. Thomas Pickens Jr. of Seymour Church of God will preach. All association ministers will participate with carols sung by the congregation and a prelude processional.
The annual Christmas home decorative lighting contest sponsored by the Jackson County Appliance Dealers Association has drawn many entries. Top prizes are 25, 15, and 10 dollars. entry blanks are at 14 member stores or Public Service office, with judges from another city to pick winners after Christmas.
Official high and low temperatures recorded Friday with a 10 am reading. River level at .7 feet and trace of precipitation noted.
Lincoln first grade pupils at Lincoln School won the PTA attendance prize but chose to give the $1 prize to American Legion Post 89 Christmas Fund. The funds, part of a list totaling $923.17, support holiday efforts for local veterans and families.
A Crothersville driver Lester Earl Walker aged 17 was charged with failure to yield after a two car crash at Second and Chestnut streets. Arnold Lee McDaniels 18 faced no charge. Walker ran a stop light traveling west on Second while McDaniels came north on Chestnut. Damages were $50 to Walker s 1948 convertible and $75 to McDaniels 1952 car. Walker to appear in justice of the peace court.
Infant son of Mr and Mrs J W Marksberry of North Vernon R4 died at 8 25 pm Friday at Schneck Memorial Hospital after birth at 2 15 pm and admission to the hospital at 3 45 pm. Funeral arrangements have not been learned.
Mrs. Mattie Perkins Cross 82 native of Jackson County and wife of Rev. R. R. Cross died Friday in Indianapolis after illness. Survived by husband and four children Lor aine Huffines Mildred Campbell Marjorie Meyers Robert Cross. a twin son Russell KIA 1944. Funeral at Konkle Funeral Home Speedway follows.
The office will be closed from December 17 through January 3 for the holiday period. Dr R J Miller dentist will be unavailable during this time.
NATO ministers from 14 members announced civilian governments must retain final say on using atomic weapons in Western Europe. The communique notes a defense plan to use thermonuclear arms if needed, while not binding the U S to allied consultation in grave emergencies.
The 138th Indiana National Guard Tank Battalion to place its fourth company in Scottsburg with 105 enlisted and five officers. Lt. Paul Miller announced plans to convert a former implement company building on U S Road 31 into an armory. Recruitment in Scottsburg will begin next week as equipment moves in. Major John N. Owens commands the battalion. Other companies are located in Bedford Seymour Columbus and Paoli.
Mrs. Viola Hamilton Durham, 96, formerly of Seymour, died Friday morning in Cincinnati after months of illness. She was born April 18, 1858 and lived in Seymour for years with her husband Lon Durham a retired B&O Railroad engineer. She was an Eastern Star member and aunt to Mrs. Rollie Peek. burial planned at a Hayden, Indiana cemetery between 11 and 12 o'clock after Monday morning services.
The monthly Jackson County Hymn Sing is set for Tuesday night at 7 30 at Bethel AME Church announced by Rev. Edgar F Maddox pastor Arthur Rucker chairs the event choirs soloists quartets and instrumental groups from many churches take part.
Cleveland jurors resume deliberations in the murder trial of Samuel Sheppard after about 12 hours of discussion. The defense and prosecution cite a massive record of evidence including 214 exhibits and a million words from the nine week trial. The panel of seven men and five women appears exhausted as talks continue behind closed doors.
Wintry weather sent shoppers briskly moving through Seymour streets on the last Saturday before Christmas. With a high near 54 on Friday and a 30 degree low, today remains cold with snow flurries and continued cloudy conditions forecast for tonight and Sunday. Monday could bring more snow and colder temps.

Shields Junior High School presented an interesting Christmas program before a two week vacation. Stephen Griffith led the program as announcer and Donald Ernest gave the welcome. Sally Lester narrated Story of the Nativity and Barbara Scroggs narrated The Little Match Girl.
Prime Minister Mendes-France demanded a confidence vote after the National Assembly rebuffed his Indochina budget. A 301-291 defeat and narrow support on two other ballots left his government weakened. The vote will delay debate on German rearmament and could affect Paris treaties ratification.
