Downtown Seymour stores will stay open until 9 PM tonight for the first time this season. Merchants plan 9 PM hours through Dec 23 with 5 30 PM closing on Dec 24 and full closures on Dec 25. Parking meters are not enforced during night shopping hours except Saturday.
A Columbus grocery store and a former Seymour man face a $10,000 damage suit in Bartholomew Circuit Court. Mary Lee Plummer accuses Fred Fouts then Columbus manager and Merrill Pruitt of imprisoning her for over an hour on July 17 at the A P store in Columbus, seeking damages for mental anguish and humiliation.
Three rural Jackson county men and one from Jennings county were fined today in Seymour city court on public intoxication charges. Earl C. Eades of Crothersville R2 received $1 and $13 costs, while Barnie Pruitt and Asher Burns of Crothersville R2 and Paris Crossing R1 were each fined $20 and $13 costs. State police arrested the men after being summoned to a Crothersville tavern Thursday night.
Sey mour Community Schools and St. Ambrose Catholic School will end afternoon sessions for a two week Christmas break. Most county schools dismiss next Friday December 24 for a one week vacation with Brownstown and Tampico scheduling earlier closures. Immanuel Lutheran and Shields Junior High plan Christmas programs with return to classes January 3.
Elizabeth J Reynolds wins divorce from Robert A Reynolds and custody of four minor children in Jackson Circuit Court. Iona D Wible secures divorce from Sanford Wible in same session before Judge John M Lewis in Brownstown.
Seymour Lions Club members and families enjoyed Central Christian Church choir at the Elks Club. Under E. O. Stark the 24 voices sang Oh Come Let Us Adore Him Holy Art Thou Festival Te Deum A Joyous Christmas Song and Silent Night Santa visited and distributed treats to Lions Cubs. Claude Hart led and door prize gave Mrs. Kenneth VanSeeyoc. Decorations by committee members were praised. President Kenneth Warbritton announced no meeting next week with the next gathering December 30.
The American Legion Post 89 Christmas Fund reached 304.17 with 14.44 added today, aiming to hit 400 to provide 40 Christmas baskets in Seymour. Baskets will include ham, potatoes, milk, canned goods, bread and more, with a Kiddies Party at the Majestic Theater featuring Santa Claus and treats.
Wise City librarians and staff hosted a Thursday night dinner at Seymour Country Club honoring Phil Hamilton and his wife. Twenty five guests attended, including library board members and spouses and library staff and husbands.

Judge John M. Lewis announced reappointment of Jackson county jury commissioners for 1955. Phillip L. Cordes of Seymour, a Republican, and Willis R. Butt of Browns Town, a Democrat, have served for years. They will meet December 27 to draw lists for petit and grand juries for January term.
The notice lists Box 213 Seymour and phone 1553 for Alcoholics Anonymous. The Pines Cafe plans Friday and Saturday nights open until 1 00 a.m. The office of Dr. R J Miller dentist will be closed from December 17 to January 3.
The Defense Department unveiled a plan to enlist 100000 youths under 19 for six months of training annually, with up to 9 years reserve duty, while exempting them from the draft. The program aims to build a five million man reserve by 1959, including three million organized forces and two million in a non-organized pool, with the draft continuing.
Tampico High School announces 27 students on the honor roll for the third grading period. Principal Elmer Robbins says grades are based on A three points B two points C one point per subject, with eight students achieving a perfect three. Paris reports ministers from 14 NATO powers agreed on a new look defense plan featuring nuclear firepower and rules for when atomic arms may be used. The talks narrowed who may authorize use, with the U.S. opposing constraints that could hinder rapid response. France signaled policy would remain unchanged.
A rural North Vernon man suffered a hand injury when pinned beneath an overturned tractor for four hours on the Clarence Anglin farm. William R. Lucas, 32, was trapped as the tractor overturned and grabbed his hand during the escape attempt. A farmwife heard his cries and called Sheriff Charles Dudley and Deputy Clyde Perkins, who freed him.
The Cleveland jury began weighing Dr. Samuel Sheppard's fate after a full instruction from Judge Blythin. The jurors heard five possible verdicts including first degree murder with or without mercy, second degree murder, manslaughter, or acquittal.
Cold front moves in from the west bringing cooler conditions with snow flurries likely tonight. Saturday and Sunday expected to be cloudy and cooler with little temperature change. Northern Indiana reports snowfall including four inches at Valparaiso and slick roads in the northern third of the state. The five day outlook calls for near normal temperatures with rain or snow possible Tuesday and scattered snow flurries otherwise. Thursday high 40, low 25, and rainfall about 0.10 inch.
Funeral services are planned Saturday for Mrs. Mary Rose Handlon 34 of Scipio Indiana died Tuesday after an eight week illness. Services will be at Brown's Corner Church Scipio at 10 am and at Milton Kentucky at 2 pm. She was wife of Rev Dora Handlon mother of four James Michael Sharon and Barbara and survivor of three brothers three sisters and her mother Mrs. Lottie Campbell.
The Coast Guard abandoned hope today for the American freighter Southern Dis tricts missing off the East Coast with 24 crew members since December 4. An intensive sea and air search was called off Thursday night, but Coast Guard ships and planes will maintain routine watches on patrols and training flights.
Dag Hammarskjold accepted an invitation to visit Peiping for talks with Red China’s Chou En-lai following a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Peiping over the fate of 11 American aviators jailed as spies. The talks would focus on world peace and international tension.
A 3.8 magnitude quake struck 12 to 15 miles south of Berkeley near San Leandro at 11 09 p m causing cracked walls and shaking buildings. The tremor felt across Vallejo and the Bay Area follows a larger Nevada quake earlier.
President Eisenhower lights Washington’s 65 foot fir on the Ellipse signaling the Pageant of Peace a three week observance with 30 nations participating. He will deliver a six minute radio TV address scheduled around 4 15 p m CST. The event features live reindeer nativity carols and choirs with the Marine Band and church choirs joining in the ceremony.
