Post office in Seymour reports a holiday mail surge with Monday showing a strong uptick and expectations for continued increases through Saturday. W. H. Droege notes possible parity with last year and outlines staffing boosts, extra equipment, and parcels handling to meet the peak season demands.
Jackson county taxing units received 159 561 37 in the fall tax distribution from county auditor James E Cummings. State share totaled 64 543 39 with 38 634 88 principal surrendered and 7 139 02 endowment surrenders. Seymour civil city and Seymour school city received 39 385 28 and 36 720 29 respectively. Brownstown towns and Crothersville Medora shares are listed along with county allocations to revenue welfare hospital and bonds. Township distributions to Brownstown Carr Driftwood Grassy Fork Hamilton Jackson Owen Pershing Redding Salt Creek Vernon and Washington are given.
The Future Farmers of America district board met at Purdue University with district director Albert Stahl Jr and district advisor Nelson Lewis. They discussed district issues and planned a February 22 meeting at Purdue. Melvin Maxwell, state FFA president from Martinsville, appointed committees for the state convention including banquet, programs, rooms, and radio.
Temperatures in Southern Indiana may fall to 15 degrees with northern areas dipping to five degrees. Officials report clear roads in the north though snow squalls are possible near Lake Michigan as a cold wave hits tonight. The cold spell continues through Wednesday and Thursday after a 30 degree low recorded Monday night.
Funeral services for Mrs Lucy Fleetwood 82 of Indianapolis were held at Shirley Brothers Funeral Home in Indianapolis and at Brownstown with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Daughter of Harrison and Hettie Burrell she spent most of life in Jackson County before moving to Indianapolis. Survived by two children Alta and Charles and three brothers James and Arthur Burrell of Brownstown and Harry Burrell of Columbus.
Mrs. Catherine Belle Cowdrey of Seymour filed for passports to Italy in Albany with U S Deputy Clerk Thomas J. Jackson. She plans to join her husband Captain Charles H. Cowdrey in Italy where he serves with the 88th Division after eight years in the Army. she travels with two children Donald, 10, and Lois, 6.

Milton Leo Nehrt of Crothersville Troop 22 was named the 6500th Scout in a Monday ceremony at First Baptist Church Crothersville. Attendees included about 25 Scouts and leaders from Seymour, with church leaders Rev. Eugene Bickel and Rev. Havens officiating and presenting a complete Scout outfit and autograph handbook.
The Seymour city council will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. in the city hall to receive sealed bids for the collection of city garbage for the year 1947. Other business matters are expected to be transacted.

Meredith Wineinger of this city elected worshipful master of Jackson Lodge No. 146 Free and Accepted Masons at the annual election in the Masonic Temple. Ernest E. Truex former head of the lodge, Charles R. Mayfield senior warden, Vergil Ruddick junior warden, H. G. Massman reelected secretary, Elmer C. Lory treasurer, C. M. Hennessey trustee. Appointments for 1947 include Dallas E. Noell senior deacon Clarence Rebber junior deacon Edward C. Isaacs senior steward Neal Hennessy junior steward L. H. Becker chaplain and Frank S. Gilbert tiler. Installation set for Friday night at 7:80 in the Masonic Temple. Past master's degree conferred on Wineinger by past masters.
Senator Theodore G. Bilbo with allies faced questions over loans funds a car deal and a costly 1942 bid for the senate. Senate war probes chief Mead said Bilbo would be called to relate his side as Edward P. Terry remained unavailable due to illness.

Governor Gates and the budget committee meet with officials from Indiana’s 20 benevolent, charitable, and correctional institutions to review two year funding needs. Sessions run through Friday with no new appropriations until after the 1947 general assembly starts January 9.
The Civilian Production Administration in Indianapolis approved Murphy Store's request to install an electric elevator replacing a hand power lift. A brick shaft will be built, manager LH Van Voorhies said. The local permit is among 22 state home construction approvals.
The Jackson county board of commissioners will meet January 6 to receive bids for 1947 county supplies. Bids include gasoline oil lubricants lumber gravel tires tubes culvert pipe farm supplies and inmate burial prep. Bids due by 10 00 am at county auditor James E Cummings office.

Washington December 17. The Army and Navy agreed on unified command for overseas forces but left unsettled the home merger issue. Seven overseas commands will place control under a single commander per area, with MacArthur to lead the Far East and McNarney in Europe. A House committee urged permanent status for the national intelligence authority created by President Truman and funding direct from Congress.
Seymour city schools superintendent N. J. Lasher and Shields High principal De Witte Ogan attended an adult educational conference in Columbus Monday night. Officials from Johnson Shelby Jackson and Bartholomew counties heard talks on vocational programs veterans training and on the job training for veterans. Dennis H. Price led the meeting with notes from the state vocational department and speakers from the Veterans Administration discussed related courses.
