Charles Stahl, son of Mr and Mrs Edgar Stahl, crowned 1954 4-H corn champion of Jackson County while earning a five acre title with 147.8 bushels per acre. At Brownstown banquet he received a gold watch, a $2 prize, a blue ribbon, a Purdue University trip and seed corn gifts. Carter Fultz won the 100 acre title with 177.8 bushels. Edward A. Ragsdale announced 46 entries from 11 clubs. Judging was by T E Colbert.

Six Arrests During Truck Check Reported
A truck weight check at the permanent pit scales on U S Route 31 east of Seymour from 4 PM Wednesday to midnight resulted in six arrests. State police and weigh clerks weighed 411 trucks and cited five drivers for axle overloading and one for a PSCI violation.

Ex-Jackson County Official Max Tinch Dies at 59
Edward Maxwell Max Tinch, 59, longtime Jackson County resident, died Wednesday night at his Seymour Road home after months of illness. A former county treasurer and eight year chair of the Jackson County Democratic Central Committee, he also served in the canning industry and as a local school teacher. Funeral services are set for Saturday at Voss Mortuary with burial in Riverview Cemetery and Masonic rites. He was born August 23, 1895 in Freetown to James B. and Lydia Harbaugh Tinch and married Carrie Spurgeon on July 3, 1915 in Freetown. survivors include his wife.

One Crash Reported on Safe Driving Day in Cortland
Indiana State Police Post 7 Seymour reported a single accident in Cortland during Safe Driving Day. Marvin E White, 17, Seymour, and James W Sanders, 37, Seymour, both eastbound pickups collided at State Road 258, Sanders’ truck struck a utility pole. White's pickup damaged about $20, Sanders about $50. Sanders cited for recklessly driving.

1954 Traffic Deaths Hit 1000 Mark in State Today

Miss Anna Gaiser of Seymour dies at Schneck Memorial Hospital after several months of illness. She will lie in state at Tower and Burkholder Funeral Home with Rosary tonight, and her funeral at St Ambrose Church Friday morning. Burial follows at St Ambrose Cemetery. Born July 12, 1865, she lived at 803 South Walnut and was an active parishioner with no surviving relatives.

Indiana Safe Driving Day Toll Reaches 1000 In Fatalities
Five people died in Indiana on Safe Driving Day heightening the state’s all year toll to 1000. Martinsville resident Robert Anderson, 82, was struck by a semi on State Road 37 near Martinsville at 3 45 am. George E. Johnson, 38, from Cleveland Ohio, died on U S 6 in Elkhart county after his car hit a tree at 4 30 am. Willie Tillman of Cleveland was hospitalized with non fatal injuries. Road conditions were slick in spots as police expanded an intensive traffic safety drive.
