Postmaster Walter H. Droege announces extended hours from Friday through December 23 with windows open until 6 pm and two extra vehicles in service to handle the surge of Christmas mail. Parcel post mail and air mail are advised for distant destinations, with emphasis on timely cards and local delivery labels.
Lacy Hendricks a former Baltimore and Ohio crossing watchman in North Vernon died Monday morning at his Vernon home. He retired years ago due to ill health and is survived by his widow and several children. Funeral services will be at 2 PM Wednesday at Pilgrim Church North Vernon, with burial in the North Vernon Cemetery.
Jackson County Selective Service Board clerk Mrs Vivian Smith said eight county men are scheduled for induction into the armed services on January 5. The office will be closed all day Wednesday December 17 but will reopen Thursday for business.
Master Sgt. Oscar D. Smith, husband of Mrs. Emma Smith of Seymour, Indiana, is transferred from Lawson AFB Fort Benning Georgia to Camp Stoneman California for a duty assignment in the Far Eastern Air Force. He serves in the 71st Troop Carrier Squadron, 434th Troop Carrier Group, 434th Troop Carrier Wing.
School board members and superintendents from the Ninth and Tenth Indiana districts will attend a 6:30 p.m. dinner at Seymour Country Club hosted by Seymour public schools. The gathering aims to introduce educators to state legislators and discuss proposed education legislation. Participating counties include Lawrence, Jackson, Jennings, Ripley, and Franklin, with others south to the Ohio River.
Edwin F Schneck sues to contest the will of Louisa P Graessle filed in Jackson Circuit Court. The will left the bulk of the estate to Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati and Baldwin Wallace College in Berea Ohio. Defendants include Elmer Severinghaus Grace Severinghaus Lois Perkins Carolyn Bollinger Anna Terkhorn Minnie Perrien and institutions Bethesda Hospital and Baldwin Wallace College. Estate value not stated.
Christmas spirit fills Shields Junior High as carols sung under Mrs Don Dannettelle play on a combined record player and wire recorder before classes and between periods. A decorated Christmas tree stands near the office and classrooms reflect the season as the school prepares a 1:30 pm Friday Christmas program for the public.
Stanley Hensler of the Jackson nursery spoke to the Seymour Exchange Club at Hotel Walton about how pioneer fear of wilderness and westward expansion spurred widespread timber devastation in Indiana. He noted prime walnut, cherry and white oak were burnt to clear land for crops, as forests were viewed as obstacles and enemies.
John Sandoval a 19 year old Camp Atterbury cook was charged in Jackson Circuit Court with vehicle taking after allegedly stealing a 1952 coach from John C Davidson of Seymour and driving it north on Alternate U S Road 31 where it wrecked near the Seymour radio station. He was arrested about 15 minutes after the crash by Lt Harry McMillin on Alternate Road 31.
Jackson Lodge No. 146, Free and Accepted Masons, held its semi monthly meeting in the Masonic Temple where a large number of members attended. Alonzo L. Tuttle was elected worshipful master for 1953 succeeding T. P. Cordes who led the lodge last year.
Cpl. Dale L. Eldridge of Seymour was among veterans who returned Monday from the Far East to the United States. He traveled aboard the Navy transport General Meigs, which docked in San Francisco Monday afternoon.
The office of Dr. Wm. M. Conner, optometrist, will be closed until December 18.
At a Farmers' Club gathering in Jackson township, Mrs. Charles Rush and Mrs. Arnold Schneck led a discussion on a proposed consolidation of Jackson, Redding, and Seymour city schools. The PTA urged voters to learn facts, stressing the plan concerns administration and school program rather than pupils.
Public generosity boosts the Christmas fund with donations totaling 227.00 as the committee plans final recipient lists for baskets and toys. A toy party for children is scheduled at the Majestic theater with candy treats. further gifts are welcomed at The Tribune or Seymour National Bank.
Jaycee officials announced prizes for the Christmas lighting contest. Winners in three categories will receive an 8 by 10 photograph by James Sheets, mounted in folders, as a new award alongside existing prizes. Milton Pollett serves as contest chairman.
Seymour hosts the District 10 stockholders meeting of the Indiana Farm Bureau Co operative Association on January 31 in Shields High School girls gym. Non stockholders may attend. John Curry, Sullivan president, says this Seymour session is part of a statewide series early in 1953. Complete reports of the year will be presented. Grassroots meetings last year drew over 5 000 farmers who own county co op stock.
Seymour Optimist Club met at Hotel Walton where Robert Saffell spoke on the Korean conflict. He described weight gain from packed rations for 100 men while his 12 man unit ate. He claimed Koreans fear peace as American troops leaving would bring starvation and freezing due to scarce wood. He detailed how the Korean draft board operates with three soldiers selecting people on the street.
Japanese police arrested radio operator Masao Mitsuhashi who claimed Moscow used him to send coded espionage messages to the Soviet Union and North Korea while he was paid by American and Russian sources. A foreign office spokesman said officials are probing reports of an international spy ring as details surface about an impersonation claim.
Dr. R. J. Miller, dentist, is moving his practice to a new office building on West Second Street. The Vehstage building office will close for several days and the new office is expected to open around January 5 with equipment in place.
President Truman appoints Michael V. DiSalle as economic stabilization administrator to replace Roger S. Putnam whose resignation was accepted today. Henry H. Fowler agrees to remain as director of defense mobilization until Eisenhower takes office. DiSalle, former price stabilizer, left that post to run for Ohio senate but lost to Sen. Bricker.
The Navy officially marks the keel laying of the 60,000 ton carrier Saratoga at Brooklyn Navy Yard. Secretary Kimball notes plans to build at least one carrier annually to reach ten, with atomic engines and over 100 aircraft capacity.
A car jumped the curb and struck the front porch of Donald Burke at 119 South O'Brien Street early today. Goble Hoover Wooten, 23, from Austin Alabama, was uninjured though his 1939 coupe suffered about 200 dollars in damage. Porch and steps damage was around 50 dollars. Wooten said the car suddenly went out of control at 20 mph veering into Burke’s yard. Police noted a loose tie-rod may have caused the crash.
The U.S. Navy ship Grommet Reefer ran aground off Leghorn when a 100 mile gust struck during berthing. Four Navy helicopters from Midway and Leyte rescued the last 13 crewmen, bringing total survivors to 39. Earlier breeches buoy and Italian boat rescues saved the others as winds and waves wrecked the 3,800 ton vessel.
Bruce K. Combs of Seymour officially took over as manager of the Seymour license bureau in the Wehstage building. Auditor action followed the resignation of N. J. Lasher after two years as manager. The branch will close Thursday for a one day conference at Spring Mill State Park with assistants Mrs. Clarence Knill and Mrs. Frank Wieneke. Fronteers at Crothersville and Brownstown will also close Thursday for the same meeting and reopen Friday.
American and South Korean guards killed 84 Communist prisoners during a mass breakout attempt by about 4,500 Reds on Pongam Island near Koje. About 300 guards used machine guns and rifles to quell the revolt in 55 minutes. 118 prisoners and 5 guards were injured. Lt Col George P Miller lamented the deaths while defending tough action.
